EAST WORLDHAM, a. small village on an eminence, 2! miles E.S.E. of Alton, has in its parish 25B souls, and 1687 acres of land, mostly belonging ro Lord Sherborne, the lord of the manor, and partly to a few small freeholders. Magdalen College, Oxford, owns the great tithes, and has the patronage of the vicarage, valued at £142, and now in the incumbency of the Rev. Thos. Lowndes, B.D., who is also incumbent of West Tisted. The Church is a small, a.ntiqua fabric, with a tower and three bells. The church land is nearly five acres. The poor have 20s. a year out of Binswood farm. The principal parishioners are the Rev. Thomas Lowndes, B.D., Vicarage; the Rev. .Alex. Charles Garrett, B.A.1 curate; John Haydon, shopkeeper and parish clerk; Henry Newman, blacksmith,. shopkeeper, a.nd vict., Three Horse Shoes; Wm. Christmas, Old Housfl Farm; Robt. Madgwick, Clay's F(trm; and Robt. Shotter, Manor Farm. WEST WORLDHAl\f, a small parish adjoining the above, is three miles S.E.. of .Alton, and contains only 98 souls, and 447 acres of land, all belonging to Lord Sherborne. The Church is a small, ancient sb'llcture, and the living is a perpetual curacy, valued at only £38, in the patronage of Winchester College, and incum bency of tb.e Rev. John Ba.nister, of Alton, and Kelvedon Hatch, Essex. The farmers are Daniel Turvill, Pullen's Farm, and Robt. Madgwick, Wilson Farm. HARTLEY-MAUDITT, near the source of a rivulet5 3! miles S.E. by S. oi Alton, has in its parish only 87 souls, and 1339 acres of land. Lord Sherborne is owner of the soil and lord of the manor, which was held at Domesday Survey by Wm. lrfalduitt. The ancient Manor House went to decay some centuries ago, but there are still some traces of its park and gardens. The Ohurck is an a.ncient structure, which was repajred in 1853'-4, at the cost of £450. The rectm-y, valued in K.B. at .£10. 2s., and now at £256, is in the patronage of Mrs. A. H. Douglas, and inm1mbency of the Rev. John Taylor Plummer, M.A., who has about 12 acres of glebe, and a commodious Rectory House, built in 1821. The tithes were com"' muted in 1840, for £284 per annum. The only farmer in the parish is John Tur.. vill, hop planter, &c., Hartley Park Farm. SELBORNE is a large but sequestered village, pleasantly situated in a sheltered valley of one of the tributary streams of the river Wey, on the Western skirts of Woolmer Forest, 5 miJes S.S.E. of Alton a.nd N.N.W. of Liss Station. It contains 1114 souls, and 8507 acres of land, including the hamlets of No:aToN, one mile north; 0AKHANGER, two miles north-east; and TEMPLE, one mile east of the church ; and the farms, &c.t called Bradslwtt, Oak- Wood, Blackmore~ Brockbridge1 Benhams, the Wakes, Week hill, Shortheath, Todmoor, tic., and about 3000 acres of open heath a.nd woodlands in Woolmer Forestt large ;portions of which were en.o: closed at various periods, and in 1858. (See page 51.) The soil is variou~ and the surface is picturesquely undulated and richly wooded. The Manor OJ Bel borne is held by Magdalen College, Oxford. Lord Sherborne is lord of tho manor: of Norton and Oakhanger~ and Sir A. K. Macdonald; Bart., is lord cf Temp1e manor ; but a great part of the parish belongs to various free and oopyholders.
