    Hartley Mauditt Hartley Mauditt 1.0 PARISH Worldham, formerly Hartley Mauditt 2.0 HUNDRED Alton 3.0 NGR 474300 136100 4.0 GEOLOGY Upper Greensand 5.0 SITE CONTEXT (Map 2) Hartley Mauditt was formerly the central place of its own parish. It is now classed as a deserted medieval settlement (DMS), the principal earthworks of which can be seen in the fields immediately north-west and south of the surviving parish church. The other principal feature of the settlement is a large spring-fed lake that is situated to the east of the church and is separated from it by a narrow road, the former route to Selborne Priory and onwards to Selborne. The lake supplies a stream that passes through settlement earthworks south of the church. The parish has been absorbed into Worldham CP and West Worldham is 1km north. 6.0 PLAN TYPE & DESCRIPTION (Maps 3, 4 & 5) Church & manor house + associated settlement 6.1 Church & manor house Hartley Mauditt church is the only surviving building of the Medieval settlement. At 148.32 AOD it stands above ground to the west that drops to 134.0 AOD within 0.5km. The former manor house is well documented. Its traditional site is now occupied by a copse within 30m west of the church (Paragraph 11.0 No. 1). A new manor house was built in the early C18. It is thought to have been demolished c. 1798. 6.2.1 Associated settlement The presence of other settlement buildings north, west and south of the church is attested by the numerous earthworks.

A localised context allows a consideration of the arrangements of the royal resources which supplied the Anglo-Saxon ‘national’ assembly, the witangemot. Matters arising from those minutes: WEYHILL BOTTOM CROSS ROADS – The Parish Council are meeting with Steve Woodward the Safety Engineering Team Leader at Hampshire Highways, the following morning to discuss the Weyhill Bottom Cross Roads. HIGHWAYS The Parish Council met on the 1st October to put together a proposal for the Village Gateways in Clanville and Weyhill. Two sites on Ewelme land have been identified in Clanville. The Clerk has written to Ewelme with the proposals. Sites for additional Gateways are on the A342 when entering the 40mph speed limit from Andover direction and entering the speed limit on Red Post Lane from Monxton direction. The Clerk will write to Mady Ware at Hampshire County Council with the parish Councils proposals. Various potholes in the Parish have been reported to Highways.

    HATHERDEN, Christ Church Christ Church was built in 1857. In 1975 the Churches in and church was struck by lightning and gutted by fire, around Andover leaving only the walls standing. When the church Town (North) was rebuilt, it was partitioned internally into two areas. An entrance vestibule that still has war memorial brasses in position on the west wall, and a main area for worship. The vestibule contains a memorial book with photographic records, and a tribute book with records of the donations given to the project. The main area is carpeted and the walls half panelled in light oak. There is a ceramic font made at the Aldermas- ton pottery. The parishes have much in common socially with a high proportion of professionals and retired professionals, but also a strong farming tradition; the total population is around four thousand. The congregations range widely in age from children to those in their nineties, many have lived in the area all their lives. Each parish has its own individual foci for mission, but two areas are shared, the first is to maintain a visible Christian presence in the community.

It gives background information on a number of local socio-demographic indicators including recent population growth, age breakdown, recent housing development, recent household growth and data on employment levels, the housing register, and levels of deprivation.
