DESCRIPTION The Wyck Oast is understood to originally date from the 18th century when it was an oast with five towers. The barn was converted and remodelled in 1990 into the stylish home that it is today with its mixed elevations of brick and stone under a tiled and slate roof. The reception hall is impressive with a galleried double staircase with the vaulted ceiling of the tower making it a light and spectacular entrance to the property. There is a formal dining room which is a grand room, overlooked by the first floor mezzanine library and gives access through arched double doors into the orangery. The orangery is a spectacular space with double doors at both ends giving access to terraces, impressive Chesney’s marble fireplace and underfloor heating beneath the stone floor. At the heart of the house is the kitchen/breakfast room with a utility and boiler room and two cloakrooms. There is a second kitchen, which was installed to assist with multi generation family living and provides great flexibility within the house. At either end of the ground floor there is a drawing and sitting room, both with views and access out to the front and rear gardens as well as a study. The grand double staircase is set within the single remaining oast tower and provides access to the first and second floors. The landing area is a generous space creating a mezzanine library area. The first floor accommodates a master bedroom with a walk in wardrobe and bathroom with separate shower and twin sinks. There are a series of walkways with focal and viewing points throughout with delightful views over the surrounding countryside that can be enjoyed. Signed: 3 4 Abstract Our understanding of early human behaviour has always been and continues to be predicated on an archaeological record unevenly distributed in space and time. More than 80% of British Lower-Middle Palaeolithic findspots were discovered during the late 19th/early 20th centuries, the majority from lowland fluvial contexts. Within the British planning process and some academic research, the resultant findspot distributions are taken at face value, with insufficient consideration of possible bias resulting from variables operating on their creation. This leads to areas of landscape outside the river valleys being considered to have only limited archaeological potential. This thesis was conceived as an attempt to analyse the findspot data of the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic record of the Chalk uplands of southeast Britain and northern France within a framework complex enough to allow bias in the formation of findspot distribution patterns and artefact preservation/discovery opportunities to be identified and scrutinised more closely. Taking a dynamic, landscape = record approach, this research explores the potential influence of geomorphology, 19th/early 20th century industrialisation and antiquarian collecting on the creation of the Lower- Middle Palaeolithic record through the opportunities created for artefact preservation and release.

HE interest of the writer in the study of Mediaeval Paving Tiles was aroused by the paper on the Tiles of Titchfield TAbbey in the Proceedings of the Hampshire Archaeological Society, Vol. XVII, Part I, and by Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Green, without whose help and encouragement the writer would not have embarked on the task of recording the tiles found in this part of the County, and to whom any value which the paper may have is due. The writer found ready assistance in this local research in a group of young people in whom, as part of their preparation for Confirmation, he was trying to arouse an interest in the inheritance which is ours in our ancient churches. The writer would record his appreciation of the help of the Misses Diana and Jennifer French, who traced many of the tiles and prepared the drawings for the illustration of this paper. Starting with our own church at Hartley Mauditt, the tiles there were recorded, and then, going further afield, Selborne was the objective. But the interest and enthusiasm of the young tile hunters was heightened by the discovery of further tiles in the churches of Faringdon and Binsted, which, Dr. Green assured us, had not been recorded in any of the books or reports on the Church treasures of Hampshire.
