Home and the Superego: the Risky Business of Being Home Alone

Gordon & Hernán Vera Abstract Risky Business (1983) and Home Alone (1990) are strikingly similar popular American films, family comedies. In both, the family conveniently vanishes and the son is left home alone, presented with the temptations of a newfound freedom which he promptly abuses, and then with seemingly overwhelming problems which he solves through ingenuity and risk-taking. Both are fantasies of the wise child in which adults are unsympathetic (Risky Business) or incompetent (Home Alone) and the child becomes the real adult. If we consider the superego as the internalized voice of the parents and of the culture, then both young protagonists are in revolt against the superego. In both films, we see the paradox of the child hero trashing his home in order to defend it. The two films present a rebellion against superego, home, and family not as an assault but as a defense of superego, home, and family. Both films represent the divided societal superego of America in the 1980s. 1 Feminist Filmmaking from the Ground Up: Three Films from the 1980s Michele Pierson Abstract: This chapter examines films by North American filmmakers Barbara Hammer (Audience, 1983) Yvonne Rainer (The Who Envied Women, 1985), and Peggy Ahwesh and Keith Sanborn (The Deadman, 1989). Each film is discussed in relationship to the social and institutional milieu in which it was made, its exhibition and critical reception, and the feminist ideas and debates it entered into. Keywords: feminism, film theory, film exhibition, critical reception, experimental film periodicals, Peggy Ahwesh, Barbara Hammer, Yvonne Rainer 2 There have always been multiple ways of being a feminist and, for feminist filmmakers, multiple ways in which their feminism has entered into their filmmaking. There is some value in attempting to map the diverse territory of feminist filmmaking by identifying recurrent subject matter: films about women and women’s experiences; films examining the cultural systems in which ideas about gender and sexuality are produced; films that value cultural and aesthetic pursuits, which have historically been perceived to be feminine and, as a consequence, have been devalued; films that examine the wider social and economic implications of ordinary, everyday activities. The feminist slogan, ‘the personal is political,’ is a still handy distillation of feminism’s preoccupation with the worldliness of the everyday. The problem with any kind of mapping of feminist filmmaking in terms of subject matter, on the other hand, is less that it is never going to be representative than the fact that, like other experimental films, the films made by feminist filmmakers are almost never only about, never only doing, one thing. -

SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date. -
