Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF)
Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) Introduction to CAE’s MSHATF The Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) was developed by CAE in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence. Responsible for the design, construction and financing of the facility that opened in 1999, CAE operates the MSHATF under a 40-year private finance initiative (PFI) contract. CAE’s MSHATF is delivering the total spectrum of synthetic aircrew training demanded by the UK Joint Helicopter Command Support Helicopter Force. The turnkey training program includes academic classroom training and simulator training delivered by experienced instructors. The MSHATF is equipped with six full-mission simulators configured for CH-47 Chinook, AW101 Merlin and Puma helicopters. Under the terms of its PFI contract, CAE also has the ability to provide turnkey training to third-party users. This enables approved military and civil operators across the globe to take advantage of the advanced simulation, training and mission rehearsal capability at the MSHATF on a highly cost-effective basis. Other NATO nations and wider alliances also regard the MSHATF as part of their normal training regime. For example, Royal Netherlands Air Force Chinook crews routinely train alongside their Royal Air Force (RAF) counterparts before operational deployments. In addition, Royal Navy crews operating the UK Merlin and other operators of the AW101 helicopter such as the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Danish Air Force, and Portuguese Air Force use the advanced Merlin simulators for a range of training applications, including battlefield and search and rescue (SAR) roles. The MSHATF also offers Puma helicopter training where the customer base includes the RAF and several Middle Eastern customers. -

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the Sponsor of a proposed change to the current arrangements and procedures in the immediate airspace surrounding the airport. As the airport operators, and operators of the current Class D Controlled Airspace (CAS), RAF Brize Norton is managing this process on behalf of the MOD. If approved, the proposed change will provide enhanced protection to aircraft on the critical stages of flight in departure and final approach, and will provide connectivity between the RAF Brize Norton Control Zone (CTR) and the UK Airways network. In addition, the Airspace Change will deliver new Instrument Flight Procedures (IFP) utilising Satellite Based Navigation which will futureproof the procedures used at the Station. As part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Guidance on the Application of the Airspace Change Process (Civil Aviation Publication (CAP) 725) [Reference 1], BZN is required to submit a case to the CAA to justify its proposed Airspace Change, and to undertake consultation with all relevant stakeholders. -

Research Briefing Number CBP 9298 Afghanistan statistics: UK deaths, By Noel Dempsey 16 August 2021 casualties, mission costs and refugees 1 Background Since October 2001, US, UK, and other coalition forces have been conducting military operations in Afghanistan in response to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001. Initially, military action, considered self-defence under the UN Charter, was conducted by a US-led coalition (called Operation Enduring Freedom by the US). NATO invoked its Article V collective defence clause on 12 September 2001. In December 2001, the UN authorised the deployment of a 5,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to deploy in, and immediately around, Kabul. This was to provide security and to assist in the reconstruction of the country. While UN mandated, ISAF continued as a coalition effort. US counter terrorism operations under Operation Enduring Freedom remained a distinct parallel effort. In August 2003, NATO took command of ISAF. Born in Lincoln in 1970, Captain Griffin was educated in Nottingham before joining the RN direct from school in 1988. After BRNC Dartmouth and a holdover on the Dartmouth Training Squadron in HMS Bristol, he completed flying training at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, RNAS Culdrose and 707 Squadron, RNAS Yeovilton. Joining 846 Squadron for his first front-line tour in November 1991, he detached on various exercises around the UK and Europe, including Norway, before deploying on Op GRAPPLE in HMS ARK ROYAL in the Adriatic. His final deployment on this tour was to Northern Ireland on Op BANNER. Moving to 845 Squadron in June 1994 he saw 4 deployments to Bosnia and completed the Instrument Rating Instructor Course at RAF Shawbury. Completing the Qualified Helicopter Instructor course in May 1996 he moved to 848 Squadron for 2 years, gaining his A2 Instructor category in March 1998. Returning to 846 Squadron in June 1998 as the Training Officer, he completed more UK and European exercises, but the tour was dominated by further operations in Northern Ireland. Promoted to Lt Cdr in 2001 he moved to Northern Ireland for his first Staff appointment as SO2 J3 Ops in the HQ Joint Helicopter Force (Northern Ireland), responsible for the Operational Capability of the tri-service multi-type helicopter force and the promotion of Joint flying practices. On completion he spent a short stint as SO2 Avn in the National Contingent Headquarters in Qatar during Op TELIC. Returning to the CHF in Apr 2003, he joined 846 Squadron once again, as the Executive Officer / Senior Pilot. -
