With a new trendy diet popping up every other month, issues such as constipation or bloating. Musician Connor Mackenzie

By Joe McDonald Connor Mackenzie is a 23-year-old, singer/ from Enoch Cree Nation. He has been consistently writing music for just over 2 years now, and has honed his skills in such a way that would impress any musician. Connor describes his own personal writing and playing style as “Haunting, hopeful Blues,” a sound created by the mosaic of artists he draws musical inspiration from. Connor knew being a musician would be an important aspect of his life since the age of 18, when he would stand in the mirror belting Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking out loud' while strumming an air guitar. From there Connor learned a few chords to sing along with, and that would be beginning of his journey as a musician. From Joshua Jackson to the late Gord Downie, Connor said there are many artists in his life who have either inspired him, or given him advice that has helped him become the musician he is today. A big vocal inspiration to Connor, and just an all around talented artist is the beautiful Celeigh Cardinal. She is an indigenous singer/songwriter from Alberta who is currently making her mark on the Canadian music scene. I have actually had the great pleasure of watching multiple Celeigh Cardinal performances with Connor, and I understand why her voice is so inspiring to him. The artist who he draws the most inspiration from however, and who's words and music speak to him in a way like no other artist does, is the amazing Dallas Green, of City and Color. “He has a profound philosophy about fame, he spoke about not diverging from making the music that you love, he's Canadian, and loyal to Canadian music.” Connor's own words about his all-time-favorite artist. “Body in a Box,” by the Canadian singer, stood out to Connor at a time in his life when he was dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts. There was even a period when he thought it would be his funeral song. But with addiction, failed relationships, and depression all represented in his songs, Connor's music still has an underlying message of hope. “Music has giving me an outlet, for 21 years I felt like there was something I had to release from my head and my heart, and music is a creative way I can do that, and it means even more that people enjoy listening to what I have to say. Music hasn't changed as a person, but it's helped me grow and become more of who I truly am. At the end of the day, I want to be that musician doing small shows in Canadian cities, to a room full of guys like the ones I grew up with.” I asked Connor what he would like to see in the future of Indigenous music, and for the future of the artists of Enoch, his response: “We need more opportunities for artists to perform at band meetings and other events, because there is definitely no shortage of talent in this community. As for the Indigenous music scene, I want to see the beautiful art we as indigenous people can make out of our trauma, out of our history, and out of our culture.”

Musician Stirling John

By Joe McDonald

Stirling John is a Country/Gospel, singer/songwriter from Ontario, who also serves as an RCMP officer for Enoch Cree Nation. Stirling John grew up in a Christian household, where music was the center of many occasions. His mother always had a dream to have a family singing group like the Partridge family, by the age of 5, he was performing in church. Sterling's biggest inspiration in music isn't a specific artist, it is more so the love and family that was the main message in gospel, he also draws lots of inspiration from his experiences growing up in a single parent household. There was a period in his life where Stirling hadn't been singing music, times when felt he wasn't good enough, or he needed to better his skills. It wasn't until he became a single father, and life put him through some difficult times. When he found the inspiration to write the music that was in his heart. He wrote a very personal song about failed relationships, one which he found a lot of people in a similar situation could relate to, this connection with an audience is what started his journey into song writing. His life as an officer was also an area of life which he drew inspiration. MMIW, addictions, gangs, human trafficking and other things that plague indigenous people, were all topics which he felt needed to be addressed, and he did so by writing the song 'Angel in Disguise'. He was recently asked to perform at the Saddle Lake Christmas party, he used the opportunity to showcase 'Angel in Disguise'. That was a big moment for Stirling because not only did he get a chance to showcase his song, but it led him to be asked to perform at the MMIW conference in Edmonton on March 16. 17. 18. which he will do in full uniform. Stirling John has worked in Enoch since 2013, an experience which he says has been a fulfilling one for him, he has plans to work with the youth here and hopefully help blossom new talent. Stirling John is currently in a band called Hometown Stereo, on Feb 21 they released his song 'Angel in Disguise' which promotes awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women. The band recorded another single recently called 'A little is Enough,' which they plan to release 18 weeks after Angel in Disguise. He also works on his own projects as a solo artist, his next solo single is going to be titled “the Distance”. Stirling's message to other musicians is to always persevere, be consistent, and always stick to your goals because nothing happens over night. Set goals that are achievable, and remember to have a back up plan. You can find Hometown Stereos music on most online music outlets such as Spotify, ITunes, YouTube etc. He is currently in the process of getting his own personal website started for his solo music to be shared.
