Report prepared by The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico and Arizona. 85 p. i Executive Summary Sky Island grasslands of central and southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico form the “grassland seas” that surround small forested mountain ranges in the borderlands. Their unique biogeographical setting and the ecological gradients associated with “Sky Island mountains” add tremendous floral and faunal diversity to these grasslands and the region as a whole. Sky Island grasslands have undergone dramatic vegetation changes over the last 130 years including encroachment by shrubs, loss of perennial grass cover and spread of non-native species. Changes in grassland composition and structure have not occurred uniformly across the region and they are dynamic and ongoing. In 2009, The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) launched its Sky Island Grassland Initiative, a 10-year plan to protect and restore grasslands and embedded wetland and riparian habitats in the Sky Island region. The objective of this assessment is to identify a network of priority grassland landscapes where investment by the Foundation and others will yield the greatest returns in terms of restoring grassland health and recovering target wildlife species across the region. -

Vento Chairman, Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands Committee on Natural Resources House of Representatives Dear Mr. Chairman: Concerned about alleged degradation of areas being considered for possible inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System (wilderness study areas), you requested that we provide you with information on the types and effects of activities in these study areas. As agreed with your office, we gathered information on areas managed by two agencies: the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLN) and the Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. Specifically, this report provides information on (1) legislative guidance and the agency policies governing wilderness study area management, (2) the various activities and uses occurring in the agencies’ study areas, (3) the ways these activities and uses affect the areas, and (4) agency actions to monitor and restrict these uses and to repair damage resulting from them. Appendixes I and II provide data on the number, acreage, and locations of wilderness study areas managed by BLM and the Forest Service, as well as data on the types of uses occurring in the areas. -
Reconstruction of Mid Wisconsin Environments in Southern New Mexico
Articles Arthur H. Harris Reconstruction of Mid Wisconsin Environments in Southern New Mexico Abundant vertebrate remains from two mid-Wisconsin cave deposits in New Mexico allow reconstruction of paleoenvironments. Dry Cave lies in southeastern New Mexico, U-Bar Cave in the extreme southwest (Figure 1). Both sites are in the ecotone between woodland and Chihuahuan Desert vegetations. During the mid Wisconsin, both had vertebrate species indicative of woodland, but otherwise differed greatly. Dry Cave had winter temperatures milder than those at the site today, but otherwise the climate was similar to that now found some 450 km to the north. Except for taxa allowed into the area by mild winters, extralimital forms occur in nearby highland woodlands or in northeastern New Mexico. U-Bar Cave probably lacked winter freezes, had cool summers, and had precipitation more evenly distributed than now. Taxa now as distant as the Great Basin occurred together with species from the nearer highlands. Relatively warm summers and retention of seasonal patterns of precipitation at Dry Cave in contrast to cool summers and decreased seasonality of precipitation at U-Bar Cave produced more extreme biotic differences between the sites than is the case now. Whether this was due to different contemporaneous climatic regimes or to chronological differences between the faunas is uncertain. The last major subdivision of the Pleistocene Epoch is the Wisconsin Age. Between ice advances in the early Wisconsin, terminating around 60 000 B.P., and a major renewal of glacial activity in the late Wisconsin, commencing around 32 000 to 27 000 B. P., there was a long span of less severe climatic conditions, the mid Wisconsin (see Bradley 1985 for age estimates). -

Plan for the Recovery of Desert Bighorn Sheep in New Mexico 2003-2013
PLAN FOR THE RECOVERY OF DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP IN NEW MEXICO 2003-2013 New Mexico Department of Game and Fish August 2003 Executive Summary Desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) were once prolific in New Mexico, occupying most arid mountain ranges in the southern part of the state. Over-hunting, and disease transmission from livestock are 2 primary reasons for the dramatic decline in bighorn sheep numbers throughout the west during the early 1900s. In 1980, desert bighorn were placed on New Mexico’s endangered species list. From 1992-2003, approximately 25% of bighorn were radiocollared to learn causes of mortality driving this species towards extinction. Approximately 85% of all known-cause non-hunter killed radiocollared individuals have been killed by mountain lions. Despite the lack of a native ungulate prey base in desert bighorn range, mountain lion populations remain high, leading to the hypothesis that mountain lions are subsidized predators feeding on exotic ungulates, including cattle. Lack of fine fuels from cattle grazing have resulted in a lack of fire on the landscape. This has lead to increased woody vegetation which inhibits bighorn’s ability to detect and escape from predators. Bighorn numbers in spring 2003 in New Mexico totaled 213 in the wild, and 91 at the Red Rock captive breeding facility. This is in spite of releasing 266 bighorn from Red Rock and 30 bighorn from Arizona between 1979 and 2002. Several existing herds of desert bighorn likely need an augmentation to prevent them from going extinct. The presence of domestic sheep and Barbary sheep, which pose risks to bighorn from fatal disease transmission and aggression, respectively, preclude reintroduction onto many unoccupied mountain ranges. -

Lopez INTRODUCTION This map report is one of a series of geologic and hydrologic maps covering all or parts of States within the Basin and Range province of the' western United States. The map reports in this series contain detailed information on the geohydrology of the province, including the ground-water hydrology, ground-water quality, surface distribution of selected rock types, tectonic conditions, areal geophysics, Pleistocene lakes and marshes, and mineral and energy resources. This work is a part of the U.S. Geological Survey's program for geologic and hydrologic evaluation of the Basin and Range province to identify prospective regions for further study relative to isolation of high-level nuclear waste (Bedinger, Sargent, and Reed, 1984). This map report was prepared from published geologic maps and reports utilizing the project guidelines defined in Sargent and Bedinger (1984). The map shows the known occurrences of pre-Quaternary ash-flow tuff and laharic breccia and associated tuff breccia and agglomerate. The Description of Map Units includes the geologic age, radiometric age, if available, the lithology, thickness where available, and sources of data for the tuffs and laharic breccias in outlined and numbered areas in the counties of the study area. The radiometric ages do not necessarily represent the entire age range of the geologic units. Nomenclature of the geologic units in this map report is from published reports and does not necessarily conform to U.S. -

Lieutenant Faison’s Account of the Geronimo Campaign By Edward K. Faison Introduction The Sky Islands region of southeastern Arizona and northeastern Sonora consists of 40 wooded mountain ranges scattered in a sea of desert scrub and arid grassland. To the west is the Sonoran Desert. To the east is the Chihuahuan Desert. To the north are the Arizona–New Mexico Mountains, and to the south is the Sierra Madre Occidental Range where elevations rise almost 10,000 feet from canyon floor to forested ridge. This “roughest portion of the continent,” in the words of General George Crook, was the setting of the Apache Wars—an American Indian–US Army conflict (1861–1886) unparalleled in its ferocity, physical demands, and unorthodox tactics. For a young lieutenant raised on North Carolina’s coastal plain and schooled in traditional warfare, Arizona in the 1880s was no ordinary place to embark on a military career.1 From this formative experience came this memoir by Lieutenant Samson L. Faison, which chronicles his eleven months of service in the Southwest during the Geronimo Campaign of 1885–1886. He wrote it in 1898 while serving at West Point as senior instructor of infantry tactics. It was never published.2 Faison’s account begins two days after the May 17, 1885 breakout of Geronimo, Natchez, Nana, and 140 Chiricahua Apache followers from the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona. Along the way, we revisit important milestones such as the death of Captain Emmet Crawford at the hands of Mexican militia, the surrender Faison's 1883 West Point Graduaon Photo conference between Geronimo and General Crook at Cañon de (USMA photo) los Embudos, and Geronimo’s subsequent flight back to Mexico followed by Crook’s resignation. -
Mimbres Resource Management Plan (RMP) Preparation Process

It contains both the Approved Resource Management Plan and the Record of Decision (ROD). Although this may mark the completion of the land use planning stage, it denotes the beginning of the plan implementation stage. Signed on April 30, 1993, the ROD for the Mimbres RMP records the acceptance of the Proposed RMP (with some modification) as the land use plan for the Mimbres Resource Area, and will shape the management direction of its resources for the next 20 years. Since the approval of the ROD, we have begun implementing the RMP. The Approved RMP as presented in this document will serve as a basis from which both the BLM and the public can track the implementation of the Plan. You will continue to be informed of the progress in implementation through the publication of an Annual RMP Update. This annual update will identify completed actions, as well as actions planned for the coming year, thus enabling you to be involved in specific land management actions. Your continuing interest and involvement in ELM's management of the public land and resources within the Mimbres Resource Area will be the key to successful implementation of the RMP. Distributional Records for Seven Species of Mammals in Southern New Mexico

Mammalian distributions also can change with human introductions, lack of prior surveys, and misidentification of museum specimens. Here, I report on distributional records for seven species of mammals in southern New Mexico, including Nasua narica, Ammospermophilus harrisii, Chaetodipus baileyi, Dipodomys merriami, Peromyscus truei, Sigmodon fulviventer, and Sigmodon hispidus. For one species (A. harrisii), new records likely reflect a distributional shift related to recent changes in habitat, whereas oth- ers (C. baileyi, D. merriami, P. truei, S. fulviventer, and S. hispidus) likely represent overlooked populations because of a paucity of published surveys in the region. For N. narica, data include details on localities of record and reproductive data for a species previously known from the region but lacking specific details. Continued surveys and documentation of distributional limits of mammals will allow us to better evaluate how environmental changes affect biological com- munities and will help us to interpret new extra-limital records.
