Pass through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, stay to the right, and bear right at the first ramp over the bridge onto I‐376 • Exit I‐376 at the Oakland/Forbes Avenue Exit (2A) • Merge onto Forbes Avenue toward Oakland • Continue on Forbes Avenue and make a left onto Bigelow Blvd. Cross over 5th Ave and Soldiers and Sailors Garage is on your left. From the Pennsylvania Turnpike (From the East) • Take the Pittsburgh/Monroeville Exit (Exit 57). Follow I‐376 toward Pittsburgh • Take the Oakland Exit (3B). Proceed up the hill through the first traffic light • Continue on Bates Street where you can reach Forbes Avenue by turning left on ANY of the following roads off of Bates: (in order of which you would drive by) McKee Place, Semple St., Atwood St., or S. Bouquet St. • Continue on road of your choice until you reach the intersection with Forbes Avenue • Continue on Forbes Avenue and make a left onto Bigelow Blvd. Cross over 5th Ave and Soldiers and Sailors Garage is on your left. From the North • Take I‐79 South to I‐279 South to I‐579 (Veterans Bridge – Exit 8A) • Follow Signs to Oakland/376 East onto the Blvd. of the Allies exit. • Follow the Boulevard of the Allies, staying in the left lane. After the Monroeville split, look for an immediate right on to the Forbes Avenue exit. • Continue on Forbes Avenue and make a left onto Bigelow Blvd. Cross over 5th Ave and Soldiers and Sailors Garage is on your left. The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania.

By offering a multitude of options for decision-makers, the report can serve as a tool for guiding change in the Strip District. Following is a summary of the major findings presented in Guiding Change in the Strip: • The Strip has a small residential population. As of 2000, the population was on 266 residents. Of these residents, there is a significant income gap: There are no residents earning between $25,000 and $35,000 annually. In other words, there are a limited amount of middle-income residents. Furthermore, nearly three-quarters of the 58 families living in the Strip earned less than $25,000 in 1999. These figures represent a segment of the residential population with limited voice in the development of the Strip. There is an opportunity for NITS, in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, to increase the presence of these residents in the future of the Strip.

Media Contacts: Kim Roberts 412-454-6382 [email protected] Brady Smith 412-454-6459 [email protected] Fort Pitt Museum to Commemorate 240th Anniversary of Treaty of Fort Pitt -The historic treaty was the first official treaty between the U.S. government and an American Indian nation- PITTSBURGH, Sept. 19, 2018 – The Fort Pitt Museum, part of the Smithsonian-affiliated Senator John Heinz History Center museum system, will present its Treaty of Fort Pitt: 240th Anniversary Commemoration on Saturday, Sept. 29 beginning at 11 a.m. To commemorate the anniversary of the historic Treaty of Fort Pitt, the museum will host a day of special living history programming that will feature visiting members of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, whose ancestors lived in Western Pennsylvania and participated in Treaty of Fort Pitt negotiations in 1778. Throughout the day, visitors can watch reenactments of treaty negotiations and interact with historical interpreters to learn about 18th century life and diplomacy at Fort Pitt. In an evening presentation entitled “First in Peace: The Delaware Indian Nation and its 1778 Treaty with the United States,” Dr. David Preston will discuss how Indian nations and frontier issues shaped the American Revolution, as well as the significance of the Treaty of Fort Pitt and why it deserves to be remembered today. The Historic Pittsburgh Point William H
The Historic Pittsburgh Point William H. Stevenson "The Point" is the triangular shaped piece of land be- tween the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where they unite their waters to form the Ohio, which the French named the LaBelle River or the "Beautiful River." The spot is well named not only because of its physical shape, the land there tapering to the end of a triangle, but also because it was the point or place where great historic events culminated which changed the destiny of this great nation. The Indians, we know, definitely were the first to settle on or near the Point. Probably they were preceded by the Mound Builders of whom some evidence is thought to have been found at McKees Rocks a short distance be- low the Point. We do know that the Indians had a village or settlement at Shannopin's Town on the Southeast side of the Allegheny about two miles above the Point and no doubt visited the latter. In 1748 Conrad Weiser was sent by the Governor of Pennsylvania as a messenger to the Indians on the Ohio at their request and he probably saw the Point. On this visit he found George Croghan had established a trading post at the mouth of the Beaver and he had also probably seen the Point. The next year Celeron sailed down the Allegheny River, planting plates at various places, claiming the territory west of the Allegheny for France. He, how- ever, did not see the Point, although he passed it and en- tered the Ohio, for his canoe passed beyond Smoky Island, which was opposite the Point and near the Allegheny or North Side of the River and so he missed the confluence of the two rivers, the Monongahela and the Allegheny.

Huston the first shot in the "Great War for Empire" was Althoughfiredin the contest for the Ohio Valley in 1754, the British did not become dominant in this region until four years after the conflict had commenced. Itwas in 1758 that General John Forbes, too illto travel other than on a sling pulled by two horses, succeeded in forcing the French to destroy and evacuate Fort Duquesne (the present site of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), which had been the symbol of French hegemony in the transappalachian region since its erection in 1754. To retain this newly acquired territory under British control, Forbes immediately ordered construction of a new fort which was com- pleted withinsight of the ruins of the French installation. 1 Throughout the remainder of the French and Indian War and until 1772, the British maintained control of this fortress to which General John Stanwix had given the name Fort Pitt.2 With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, and the resulting transfer of a vast expanse of territory to the British,an assessment by Dr. Huston is assistant professor of history at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. 174 HISTORY OF FORT LIGONIER General Stanwix at Fort Pitt on June 29, 1760, as fol- lows: "I received yesterday by the express, Mr. Boyle, your letter of the 27th of February, in consequence of which Col. Vauhn's detachment is to march tomorrow to Philadelphia. As they have no men detached be- yond this, I have only to relieve Bushy Run, Ligonier and Stony Creek-one sergeant and six privates at Bushy Run; Lieut. Blane, one sergeant and one cor- poral and eighteen at Ligonier; one sergeant and six at Stony Creek." Also, in a letter written on December 2, 1761, Bouquet says that he had sent small forces of Royal Americans to Bedford, Stony Creek and Fort Ligonier and one sergeant and two men to Bushy Run. Also, on June 10, 1762, Lieutenant Blane, commander at Fort Ligonier, wrote to Colonel Bouquet explaining arrangements he had made for relieving the posts at Stony Creek and Bushy Run. In Chapter X, we saw that Captain Ecuyer reported to Colonel Bouquet about June 1, 1763, that the Indians had "told Byerly to leave his place in four days, or he and his family would be murdered." On June 2, he reported that the men at Bushy Run had retreated to Fort Ligonier. Pontiac, Guyasuta, Custaloga, Shingas, Turtle Heart and their warriors well knew that the destruction of Fort Pitt would not crown their efforts with success unless Fort Ligonier,. also, were destroyed. This post- commanded by Captain Archibald Blane, of the Royal Americans, with a small garrison of these troops, con- tained stores and munitions which would be of much use to the Indians.
