Edward Heppenstall Papers Collection 190 Register of the Edward Heppenstall Papers Collection 190 Adventist Heritage Center James White Library Andrews University Berrien Springs, Michigan 49104-1400 February 1999 Edward Heppenstall Papers (Collection 190) Scope and Content: Edward Heppenstall was born in 1901 at Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. He earned an BA degree at Emmanuel Missionary College, a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, and a PhD from the University of Southern California in 1951. He pastored several churches, served as youth director for the Michigan Conference, and taught at La Sierra College (1940-1955), SDA Theological Seminary and Andrews University (1955-1966), and Loma Linda University (1966-1976). He wrote several books including In Touch With God, The Man Who Is God, Our High Priest, Perfection, and Salvation Unlimited. Additionally, many articles are attributed to him. He is best known for his work on the atonement, righteousness by faith, and the nature of Christ. Heppenstall was one of the leading theologians in the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the later middle years of the 20th century. He died in 1994. The Edward Heppenstall Papers cover a wide range of topics reflective of the teaching and study interests of the man. Some of the larger topic areas include: atonement, Daniel, righteousness, salvation, sanctuary, law, philosophy, preaching, and Revelation. The material includes correspondence, lecture notes, class materials, clippings, and other such types of records. While the amount of correspondence is somewhat disappointing, there are still files of correspondence with Desmond Ford, Louis Venden, George D. Keough, Robert Brinsmead, and J. S. Washburn, plus many letters in less significant amounts. Arrangement The collection has two parts. The first, consisting of two boxes, is more personal in nature. The second part, consisting of 89 boxes, is topical in arrangement. The arrangement is alphabetical. The papers were not in any order when they arrived at the archives. In processing, like titles were put together. Through combining similar folder titles we eliminated many repetitive folders. Very little rearranging of folder contents took place. There are many folders for some of the topic areas. These have a subheading to differentiate them from others of the same general topic. This is clearly seen on the following inventory pages. Heppenstall Papers–page 2 Provenance Following the death of Edward and his wife, their children donated this collection to the Andrews University Adventist Heritage Center. This occurred in 1996. Along with the papers were four boxes of books from Heppenstall’s personal library. The family retained the bulk of the library. Use All users of this collection will be required to complete the “Application to Use Unpublished Records,” and to observe the regulations specified in the “Patron Agreement” and “Researcher’s Code of Conduct.” All records in this collection are open and available for research. • Ron Numbers Collection-- the Creationists
Register of the Ron Numbers Collection-- The Creationists Collection 178 Center for Adventist Research James White Library Andrews University Berrien Springs, Michigan 49104-1400 1992, revised 2007 Ron Numbers Collection--The Creationists (Collection 178) Scope and Content This collection contains the records used as resource material for the production of Dr. Numbers' book, The Creationists, published in 1992. This book documents the development of the creationist movement in the face of the growing tide of evolution. The bulk of the collection dates from the 20th century and covers most of the prominent, individual creationists and pro-creation groups of the late 19th and 20th century primarily in the United States, and secondarily, those in England, Australia, and Canada. Among the types of records included are photocopies of articles and other publications, theses, interview tapes and transcripts, and official publications of various denominations. One of the more valuable contributions of this collection is the large quantity of correspondence of prominent individuals. These records are all photocopies. A large section contains documentation related to Seventh-day Adventist creationists. Adventists were some of the leading figures in the creationist movement, and foremost among this group is George McCready Price. The Adventist Heritage Center holds a Price collection. The Numbers collection contributes additional correspondence and other documentation related to Price. Arrangement Ron Numbers organized this collection for the purpose of preparing his book manuscript, though the book itself is not organized in this way. Dr. Numbers suggested his original arrangement be retained. While the collection is arranged in its original order, the outline that follows may be of help to some researchers.

Hudson Papers Collection 193 Biographical Information A. L. Hudson is a layman living in Baker City, Oregon. A printer by trade and a theologian by interest, he became enmeshed in many of the theological controversies within the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the 1950's to the 1980's. He was one of the principle printers for many of the independent movements during those times including Andreasen and Brinsmead. Due to his theological positions, he ran afoul of the church structure from the local church to the General Conference. He was disfellowshipped in 1961, but remained engaged and continued to attend church. Scope The papers consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and various manuscripts written not only by A. L. Hudson but also by authors, such as Brinsmead, Andreasen, and others. Arrangement The correspondence files are arranged chronologically. This will help the researcher understand the context from which the letter came better than in an alphabetical arrangement by writer. The topical files are arranged alphabetically. See the following inventory. Provenance The A. L. Hudson Papers were donated to the Andrews University Adventist Heritage Center in 1998, by Mr. Hudson. Use All users of this collection will be required to complete the "Application to Use Unpublished Records," and to observe the regulations specified in the "Patron Agreement" and "Researcher's Code of Conduct." Burdick, Clifford Leslie (1894–1992) JAMES L. HAYWARD James L. Hayward, Ph.D. (Washington State University), is a professor emeritus of biology at Andrews University where he taught for 30 years. He is widely published in literature dealing with ornithology, behavioral ecology, and paleontology, and has contributed numerous articles to Adventist publications. His book, The Creation-Evolution Controversy: An Annotated Bibliography (Scarecrow Press, 1998), won a Choice award from the American Library Association. He also edited Creation Reconsidered (Association of Adventist Forums, 2000). Clifford Leslie Burdick, a Seventh-day Adventist consulting geologist, was an outspoken defender of young earth creationism and involved in the search for Noah’s Ark. Many of his claims were sensationalist and later discredited. Early Life and Education Born in 1894, Burdick was a graduate of the Seventh Day Baptist Milton College of Wisconsin. After accepting the Seventh-day Adventist message, Burdick enrolled at Emmanuel Missionary College (EMC, now Andrews University) in hopes of becoming a missionary. There he met the prominent creationist George McCready Price who inspired Burdick’s Clifford Leslie Burdick. interest in “Flood geology.”1 From Youth's Instructor, July 11, 1967 In 1922 Burdick submitted a thesis to EMC entitled “The Sabbath: Its Development in America,” which he later claimed earned him a Master of Arts degree in theology. Records show, however, that he never received a degree at EMC. He also claimed to have received a master’s degree in geology from the University of Wisconsin. Although he did complete several courses in geology there, he failed his oral exams and thus was denied a degree.2 During the 1950s Burdick took courses in geology and paleontology at the University of Arizona with plans to earn a PhD.

The question has occupied the minds of generations of people the world over. One has only to look at the proliferation of world religions to see that man seeks after something better than is contained in this life. In the Christian realm with a seemingly simple Biblical answer of, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved" (Acts 16:31 ), it would seem that the question is answered beyond any need for discussion, but Christian history would teach us otherwise. What does it mean to believe on the Lord Jesus? What is involved in this belief? And Who is Jesus? In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the topic of Christ's nature has caused heated debate.

McIver Avondale University College Introduction The doctrine of Creation has always been of great importance to Seventh-day Adventists (SDAs), probably because of its connection to one of their crucial distinguishing beliefs—the seventh-day Sabbath (Ex. 20:8–11). For example, as he contemplates “Seven reasons why it really does matter what we believe about Creation”, Greg King states, The seventh reason why it matters what we believe about Creation is the Sabbath.

  • Toward a Biblical Theology of God's Judgment
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society, 15/1 (Spring 2004): 138–165. Article copyright © 2004 by Jir¥ií Moskala. Toward a Biblical Theology of God’s Judgment: A Celebration of the Cross in Seven Phases of Divine Universal Judgment (An Overview of a Theocentric- Christocentric Approach) Jir¥ˆí Moskala Andrews University The Scriptural teaching about judgment lies at the center of GodÕs revela- tion. It is a crux of the biblical message, giving a profound paradigm for our thinking. Next to the fundamental proclamation that God is the Creator (Gen 1Ð2), the Lord is presented as the Judge: In the Garden of Eden there is the first reference to the trial judgment (Gen 3:8Ð24),1 where the grace and justice of God are intermingled.2 The biblical Flood narrative is an account about judg- ment (Gen 6Ð9).3 Abraham called God Òthe Judge of all the earthÓ (Gen 18:25). Two biblical books carry the concept of judgment in their titles: the book of Judges and the book of Daniel.4 1Claus Westermann, Genesis 1Ð11: A Commentary (Minneapolis: Augsburg, 1984), 254: ÒThe purpose of the trial scene is to make clear to the man and the woman what they have done.Ó 2Grace was demonstrated because the first couple did not die in the day when they ate from the forbidden fruit, as promised by God (Gen 2:16Ð17; 3:9), and the proto-Gospel with the promise of the seed and victory over the serpent was given (Gen 3:15).
