South Charlotte Sports Report “HOMETOWN TEAMS ... HOMETOWN KIDS” Volume 13, Issue 10 www.southcharlottesports.com @SCSportsReport November 1, 2018 - FREE KINSEY BARNETT CHEERS FOR VICTORY AT MYERS PARK senior cheerleader Kinsey Barnett works hard to bring the spirit to Myers Park High School. The daughter of Tom and Tracy Barnett has found great success as a cheerleader after transitioning two years ago from her lifetime sport of gymnastics. In addition to being a top level cheer athlete, Kinsey carries a 4.0 unweighted grade point average in the demanding IB Program at Myers Park. After much thought, Kinsey decided to retire from training at Perfect Balance Training Center Gymnastics in 2017. With an older sister that had found great success as cheerleader on the Mustangs sideline, Kinsey decided cheerleading would become her sport of choice. “As a competitive gymnast for most of my life up until the end of sophomore year, I had never had the opportunity to participate in school activities or sports so having the ability to be on the sidelines cheering on our team is super exciting for me.” With her vast experience in gymnastics, Kinsey was a natural for a flyer position on her team. Kinsey also tries to provide leadership examples to the younger team members. “I am one of many people on the team that enjoy leading our team in any way that we can. I simply want to fulfill whatever position my coach needs me to and be an example to younger girls on the team.” Kinsey has always has a strong desire to succeed in every thing she chooses to participate in. Academics are no dif- ferent for her. Kinsey is very active in school and serves as Co-President of the Young Republicans Club and is in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Council along with being a member of National Honor Society. Kinsey was also was chosen to attend Tar Heel Girls State this past summer where she simulated the American government at both the city and state levels.

The daughter of Peter and Jennifer Hall is in charge of taking the second contact of the ball on each play. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Lauren.

What are the responsibilities of the setter position? “My position takes the second contact of each play. By analyzing the lineups of our hitters and the opposing blockers, I decide who to set based on these match- ups in order to increase our chances of getting a kill.”

What are your top three athletic memories? “My favorite volleyball memory from this year was our win against Ardrey Kell on senior night. It was an emotional game against a long-time rival, but we came out with a 3-0 victory after a long night of celebrating our accomplishments as se- niors. My favorite memory last year was also on senior night when we beat Marvin Ridge in a tough five-set match. It was a long and grueling game, but we won the last set 15-13 on our senior night, mak- ing our victory even sweeter. The team also had a great win over Ardrey Kell my sophomore year, which was a super awe- some game.”

What is the best part about being on the Cougars Volleyball Team? “My favorite part of being on the Charlotte Catholic Volleyball Team is the bonds that I have formed with my teammates. They have become some of my closest friends, and I know that no matter what happens, I can count on them to have my back. I love the team bonding experiences, and we have some great traditions that have been passed down throughout the years.”

What is your role on the team? “I am a team captain, so I help to lead the team throughout the game and I am trusted to make good play decisions based on our team’s players.”

Have you made any decisions on where you would like to go to college? “I hope to attend UNC-Chapel Hill or the University of Washington next year.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I have a weighted GPA of 4.34 and am involved in National Honor Society, German Honor Society, and Math Honor Society, and I am the Vice President of the German Club.”

Are you involved in any community service projects? “I love to get involved with service projects through German Club, especially the annual trips we make to a nursing home. I also headed the reimplementation of our school’s recycling project, which is now worked on by kids from many different clubs.” Page 10 Volume 13, Issue 10
