PANHELLENIC CONGRESS OF CARDIOLOGY 5 ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΣ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ Αγαπητοί Συνάδελφοι, Αποτελεί ιδιαίτερη χαρά και τιμή για εμένα να σας καλωσορίσω, εκ μέρους της Οργανωτικής Επιτροπής, στο 40ο Πανελλήνιο Καρδιολογικό Συνέδριο που πραγματοποιείται στην όμορφη πόλη των Ιωαννίνων 17-19 Οκτωβρίου στο Du Lac. Η Οργανωτική Επιτροπή κατέβαλλε τεράστια προσπάθεια για ένα επιστημονικό πρόγραμμα υψηλού επιπέδου, αποσκοπώντας στη συνεχιζόμε- νη εκπαίδευση των Καρδιολόγων καθώς και Ιατρών από άλλες ειδικότητες. Η αυξανόμενη συχνότητα, νοσηρότητα και θνητότητα από τα καρδιαγγειακά νοσήματα καθιστούν επιβεβλημένη την πρόληψη, την έγκαιρη διάγνωση και την αποτελεσματική αντιμετώπισή τους. H επιμόρφωση, επομένως, των Καρδιολόγων και ιδιαίτερα των νέων Καρδι- ολόγων, αποτελεί πρώτιστο μέλημα, με στόχο την ποιοτική παροχή ιατρικών υπηρεσιών που συμβάλλουν στην έμπρακτη στήριξη του κοινωνικού συνό- λου. Στο πρόγραμμα του Συνεδρίου - με τη συμμετοχή καταξιωμένων επιστημό- νων - θα συζητηθούν επίκαιρα και πολυσχιδή θέματα, με εξατομίκευση στην κλινική πράξη, καθώς και οι νέες εξελίξεις στην Καρδιολογία τόσο στην πρό- ληψη όσο και στη θεραπεία, ακολουθώντας τις σύγχρονες κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες. Για μια ακόμη φορά έχουμε τη χαρά και την τιμή να χαιρετίσουμε τη συμμετο- χή τόσων διακεκριμένων επιστημόνων από Ευρώπη και Αμερική, όπως και Έλληνες Επιστήμονες της Διασποράς. Ιδιαίτερη συμβολή στους στόχους του Συνεδρίου έχει η παρουσίαση του ερευνητικού έργου αξιόλογων συναδέλφων, τους οποίους ευχαριστούμε ιδι- αίτερα. Στις δύσκολες στιγμές που περνάει η χώρα μας, οφείλουμε να κρατή- σουμε σε υψηλό επίπεδο το ήθος και την επιστημονική αρτιότητα του Έλληνα γιατρού. The Organiz- ing Committee made a tremendous effort to prepare a scientific program of high-quality, with special emphasis on the continuing education of Cardiolo- gists and Doctors of other specialties. Due to the increasing incidence and the cardiovascular disease-related mor- bidity and mortality, prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment are issues of vital importance. The training of Cardiologists, and Young Cardiologists in particular, is there- fore a primary concern, in order to provide quality health care services that contribute to the practical support of the community. The congress program - with the participation of renowned scientists - is dedicated to current and complex issues in clinical practice, as well as the new developments in cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment ac- cording to the most recent Guidelines. Once again, we have the pleasure and honor to welcome the participation of so many distinguished scientists from Europe and USA , as well as Greek Scientists from the Diaspora. I would like to give special thanks to our highly valued colleagues for their contribution to the congress with the presentation of their research work. In the difficult times that our country is going through, we must keep the mo- rale and scientific excellence of the Greek doctor at a high level. The medical profession, after all, remains a sacred vocation.     Coins of the CRUSADERS The Crusades were a series of military conflicts of a religious character waged by much of Christian Europe against external and internal threats. Crusades were fought against Muslims, pagan Slavs, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, and political enemies of the popes.[1] Crusaders took vows and were granted an indulgence for past sins. The Crusades originally had the goal of recapturing Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule and were original- ly launched in response to a call from the Eastern Orthodox Byzantine Empire for help against the expansion of the Muslim Seljuk Turks into Anatolia. The term is also used to describe contemporaneous and subsequent campaigns conducted through to the 16th century in territories outside the Levant usually against pagans, heretics, and peoples under the ban of excommunication for a mixture of religious, economic, and political reasons. Rivalries among both Christian and Muslim powers led also to alliances between religious factions against their opponents, such as the Christian alliance with the Sultanate of Rum during the Fifth Crusade. The Crusades had far-reaching political, economic, and social impacts, some of which have lasted into contemporary times. Because of internal conflicts among Christian kingdoms and political powers, some of the crusade expeditions were diverted from their original aim, such as the Fourth Crusade, which resulted in the sack of Christian Constantinople and the partition of the Byzantine Empire between Venice and the Crusaders. The Sixth Crusade was the first crusade to set sail without the official blessing of the Pope, establishing the precedent that rulers other than the Pope could initiate a crusade.
