  • Oxford Lecture 1 - Final Master
OXFORD LECTURE 1 - FINAL MASTER HOW TO GROW A CREATIVE BUSINESS BY ACCIDENT The legendarily bullish film director Alan Parker once adapted Shaw's famous dictum about the academic profession - "those who can, do. Those who can't teach." So far so familiar. And to many in this room, no doubt, so annoying. But he went on: "those who can't teach, teach gym. And those who can't teach gym, teach at film school." I appreciate that Oxford is not a film school, though it has a more distinguished record than any film school for supplying the talent that has fuelled the British film and TV industries for almost a century - on and off camera. Writers like Richard Curtis, who brought us 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, The Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder; or The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy; directors of the diversity of Looking for Eric's Ken Loach and 24 Hour Party People's Michael Winterbottom; writer/directors like Monty Python's Terry Jones and the Thick of It's Armando Iannucci; actors and performers ranging from Hugh Grant to Rowan Atkinson; and broadcasting luminaries like the BBC's Director General Mark Thompson and News International's very own Rupert Murdoch. So, Oxford has been a pretty efficient film and TV school, without even trying. And perhaps that is Parker's point. Can what passes for creativity in film and TV ever really be taught? But here in my capacity as News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media (or if you prefer an acronym, NIVPOB - the final M is silent) I may be even further down Parker's food chain.

  • Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation
Disabling Comedy and Anti-Discrimination Legislation Colin Barnes 1991 A version of this paper entitled 'Disabling Comedy' appeared in Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People's Journal 'Coalition' December 1991 pp. 26 - 28 Over the last couple of years disabled people and their organizations have become increasingly concerned about disabling imagery in the media. One of the most important examples being the cynical exploitation of disabled people by charities in their efforts to raise money. Here I would like to highlight another form of disablism common to the media which disabled people are expected to endure, which is equally disabling and which is often overlooked or ignored: the exploitation of disabled people by professional non-disabled comedians on television. Of course laughing at disability is not new, disabled people have been a source of amusement and ridicule for non-disabled people throughout history. Along with the other so-called timeless universals of 'popular' humour such as foreigners, women and the clergy, Elizabethan joke books are full of jokes about people with every type of impairment imaginable. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries keeping 'idiots' as objects of humour was common among those who had the money to do so, and visits to Bedlam and other 'mental' institutions were a typical form of entertainment for the able but ignorant. While such thoughtless behaviour might be expected in earlier less enlightened times, making fun of disabled people is as prevalent now as it was then. It is especially common among professional non-disabled comedians. Indeed, several of the comedy 'greats' who influenced today's 'funny' men and women built their careers around disablist humour.

Bedfordshire People Past and Present 1 Bedfordshire People Past and Present This is just a selection of some of the notable people associated with Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire Borough and Central Bedfordshire libraries offer a wealth of resources, for more detailed information see the Virtual Library: www.bedford.gov.uk or www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk Click on Libraries Click on Local and Family History Click on People The Local Studies section at Bedford Central Library also holds an archive of newspaper cuttings, biography files, an obituary index, local periodicals and books, including A Bedfordshire Bibliography by L.R. Conisbee, which has a large biography section. 2 Bedfordshire People Past Offa (? -796 BC) King Offa, regarded as one of the most powerful kings in early Anglo-Saxon England, ruled for 39 years from 757 to his death in 796. It is traditionally believed that he was buried in Bedford, somewhere near Batts Ford. Falkes De Breaute (1180-1225) A French soldier and adventurer, Falkes's loyalty to King John was rewarded with a number of titles. The king also gave him Bedford Castle, which Falkes held until 1224 when it was besieged and demolished by King Henry III. Falkes escaped and fled to the continent but died on route from food poisoning. Queen Eleanor (1244-1290) The sad death of Queen Eleanor links her to Dunstable. She died in Lincolnshire and King Edward 1st – her husband – wanted her to be buried in Westminster, thus the body was taken back to London and passed through Dunstable. The king ordered memorial crosses to be erected at every place the funeral cortege stopped overnight.
