The Communicator April 2019 The Student Newspaper of Bronx Community College Issue 3, Winter 2019 An Insider’s Guide to Casting By Keith Burrus (Media and Digital Film Production), President, Media and Digital Film Club On Thursday, February 28th The Media and Digital Film Club (MDFC) produced our 10th episode of the OPEN DOORS live web-cast. During the show, film students learned how film & television shows are cast. This episode of Open Doors brought you behind the scenes, long before the cameras are rolling, for an inside look at how professional films and television shows are cast. How has technology changed the way projects are cast? What is SAG-AFTRA? How does a film student find background for a nonunion film or television? Are there non-union casting networks? Why should film students hire professional actors versus friends/family? All these questions and more were answered by professional casting agents. The series, videotaped before a live studio audience in the BCC TV Studio, is produced entirely by student members of the BCC Media and Digital Film Club. The show, which live-streams and is archived on the NYFTSA YouTube channel, was created in 2016 to give film students around the state invaluable film industry access and advice. The show featured three guests from three different casting agencies. Professor Jeffrey Wisotsky, Faculty Advisor for the MDFC Club, served as moderator for the show. Boardwalk Empire
BOARDWALK EMPIRE "Pilot" Written by Terence Winter FIRST DRAFT April 16, 2008 EXT. ATLANTIC OCEAN - NIGHT With a buoy softly clanging in the distance, a 90-foot fishing schooner, the Tomoka, rocks lazily on the open ocean, waves gently lapping at its hull. ON DECK BILL MCCOY, pensive, 40, checks his pocket watch, then spits tobacco juice as he peers into the darkness. In the distance, WE SEE flickering lights, then HEAR the rumble of motorboats approaching, twenty in all. Their engines idle as the first pulls up and moors alongside. BILL MCCOY (calling down) Sittin' goddarnn duck out here. DANNY MURDOCH, tough, 30s, looks up from the motorboat, where he's accompanied by a YOUNG HOOD, 18. MURDOCH So move it then, c'mon. ON DECK McCoy yankS a canvas tarp off a mountainous stack of netted cargo -- hundreds of crates marked 'Canadian Club Whiskey·. With workmanlike precision, he and .. three CREWMAN hoist the first load of two dozen crates up and over the side, lowering it down on a pulley. As the net reaches the motorboat: MURDOCH (CONT'D) (to the Young Hood) Liquid gold, boyo. They finish setting the load in place, then Murdoch guns the motorboat and heads off. Another boat putters in to take his slot as the next cargo net is lowered. TRACK WITH MURDOCH'S MOTORBOAT as it heads inland through the darkness over the water. Slowly, a KINGDOM OF LIGHTS appears on the horizon, with grand hotels, massive neon signs, carnival rides and giant lighted piers lining its shore. As we draw closer, WE HEAR faint music which grows louder and LOUDER -- circus calliope mixed with raucous Dixieland jazz. -

Domestic Violence Against Women in India: a Case Study
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN INDIA: A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT OF THE /^C THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF fioctor of $I)ilDs;opl)p •^ ^'^ IN (, POLITICAL SCIENCE BY RAHAT ZAMANI Under the Supervision of Dr. Rachana Kanshal DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE ALJGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2009 ABSTRACT Today human beings live in the so-called civilized and democratic society that is based on the principles of equality and freedom for all. It automatically results into the non-acceptance of gender discrimination in principle. Therefore, various International Human Rights norms are in place that insist on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and advocate equal rights for women. Womens' year, women decade etc. are observed that led to the creation of mass awareness and sensitization of people about rights of women. Many steps are taken by the government in the form of various policies and programmes to promote the status of women and to realize women's rights. But despite all the efforts, the basic issue that threatens and endangers the very existence of women is the issue of domestic violence against women. John Stuart Mill put it into his book 'the subjection of women' in 1869 that, 'marriage should be thought of as a partnership of equals analogous to a business partnership and the family not a school of despotism but the real school of the virtues of freedom'. Contrary to this women who constitute about half of the world's population are the worst victim of violence and exploitation within home. -
Oxford Lecture 1 - Final Master
OXFORD LECTURE 1 - FINAL MASTER HOW TO GROW A CREATIVE BUSINESS BY ACCIDENT The legendarily bullish film director Alan Parker once adapted Shaw's famous dictum about the academic profession - "those who can, do. Those who can't teach." So far so familiar. And to many in this room, no doubt, so annoying. But he went on: "those who can't teach, teach gym. And those who can't teach gym, teach at film school." I appreciate that Oxford is not a film school, though it has a more distinguished record than any film school for supplying the talent that has fuelled the British film and TV industries for almost a century - on and off camera. Writers like Richard Curtis, who brought us 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, The Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder; or The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy; directors of the diversity of Looking for Eric's Ken Loach and 24 Hour Party People's Michael Winterbottom; writer/directors like Monty Python's Terry Jones and the Thick of It's Armando Iannucci; actors and performers ranging from Hugh Grant to Rowan Atkinson; and broadcasting luminaries like the BBC's Director General Mark Thompson and News International's very own Rupert Murdoch. So, Oxford has been a pretty efficient film and TV school, without even trying. And perhaps that is Parker's point. Can what passes for creativity in film and TV ever really be taught? But here in my capacity as News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media (or if you prefer an acronym, NIVPOB - the final M is silent) I may be even further down Parker's food chain. -

Just as Martin believes he is making headway, a shocking new development rocks the town, which becomes the biggest story in Australia. The media descends on Riversend and Martin is now the one in the spotlight. His reasons for investigating the shooting have suddenly become very personal. Wrestling with his own demons, Martin finds himself risking everything to discover a truth that becomes darker and more complex with every twist.
