This special issue of Women & Performance examines how thinking about life and labor between Marxism and Performance Studies can help us attend to the world at hand. Living Labor began as a conference hosted by the department of Performance Studies at New York University, which took place 11–13 April 2014. It featured over 70 presentations, film screenings, artist presentations, and keynote addresses by Fred Moten and Sianne Ngai. The provocation of this conference was to ask what formal criteria could be articulated between aesthetic analysis and political economy. That is, how does performance analysis bring together the living body and the working body? How do Marxist and Marxist-inspired philosophies articulate and reimagine labor, value, and revo- lutionary struggle, particularly in relation to the social, aesthetic, and political dimensions of performance and performativity? I state now that I don't see the Cultural Revolution as containing much positive influence at all; therefore I saddle my research periods before and after it. In my opinion it seems that more people find the Cultural Revolution, a period of warped societal possession, strikingly interesting, I however do not. I personally find the Liberation period of the 1940's-the spirit that drove a burgeoning young Communist party to fight for China's independence-contrasted with the New Reform period of the 1980's-the time in which the battle for artistic independence is waged while new technologies and new ideas are assimilated into everyday life-to be incredibly insightful and ripe with valuable lessons for tomorrow's China. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity.     Jazz In Beijing royal hartigan I received an invitation from the Beijing MIDI Contemporary Music School to perform in their 2004 Music Festival on May 1-3. You can imagine how excited I and the members of my ensemble were. Even though I visited the school in 1999 and 2001 during the summer vacation, this time I hoped to not only witness the bustling activities of the music festival hosted by the school but also experience the close interactions among students, faculty, staff, and our ensemble members during our two-week residency from April 27 to May 10. After considerable planning with the MIDI School’s director, Mr. Zhang Fan, the four members of my group were able to arrive in Beijing from different cities and were met by representatives of the school. Ethnomusicologist Weihua Zhang also joined our residency as an assistant and interpreter. I had previously given a workshop in August 1999 on African rhythms for drumset at the school when it was located at Shangti, a northern suburb of Beijing. The students and faculty were very receptive at that time and were interested in my subsequent return to their community. In July 2001 I returned with saxophonist David Bindman and contrabassist Wes Brown, performing in the Beijing area, and we visited the school for an open rehearsal in its new campus near the Fragrant Mountain. It was there that we met Liu Xiaoguang, a composer, saxophonist, and pianist. Mr. Zhang Fan had arranged for Liu to join our ensemble for some of our performances. In order to better describe the performance scene for saxophonists in China, each chapter presents historical and political context.     Danh Vō and Xiu Xiu: “Metal” September 27–October 18, 2014 The Kitchen is pleased to present “Danh Vō and Xiu Xiu: Metal,” on view through October 18. The exhibition is curated by Tim Griffin with Lumi Tan. Having previously remarked that “the passport is the ultimate performance piece”—citing Felix Gonzalez Torres’s understanding of how movement and, by extension, cultural perspective, takes place in a legislated sphere— Vō has invited two Bangkok, Thailand-based gold pounders, Nantapol and Pruan Panicharam, to be present in the gallery while producing the gold leaf that often adorns his sculptures, from cardboard cartons featuring brand names from Budweiser to Colgate. This father-and-son team’s process of flattening 24-carat squares of gold into leaf takes three hours to execute; they will be working in the gallery daily from noon to 3pm, Tuesday through Saturday. In tandem with this duo, the band Xiu Xiu—featuring composer and musician Jamie Stewart with bandmates Shayna Dunkelman and Ches Smith—will present 52 musical compositions, with a daily selection timed cumulatively to match the duration of the gold pounders’ labor. These pieces derive from a variety of compositional techniques, with some made in the vein of new music and entirely notated, while others are either improvised in the mode of post-1950s free jazz or modeled after game structures in which the musicians follow specific sets of rules. As important as the overall duration of these works is the fact that each individual piece is five minutes long; endings are marked by loud sound—what Stewart calls an alarm—indicating transitions from one piece to the next.
