On the calendar of the Christian Church, November 1 is “All Saints Day” and November 2 is the “Commemoration of the Faithful Departed,” each of which can be celebrated on the first Sunday in November. Though slightly different, these two days are similar in that they both lead us to remember those Christians who have gone before us into glory, to thank God for their faithful witness, and to pledge ourselves to continuing their struggle to fight the good fight of faith until we too join the Church Triumphant – the Church in heaven. WE WELCOME you to our service today, we THANK you for worshipping with us, and we INVITE all of you -- most especially our visitors – to return here each and every Sunday as we worship and glorify the God of our salvation! If you are new to the area and/or do not now have a church home, we invite you to speak with Pastor concerning church membership. ORDER OF SERVICE Service of Preparation Prelude, Pastoral Welcome, Announcements OPENING HYMN: “By All Your Saints in Warfare” # 517 (vss. 1, 4, 3) 1 By all Your saints in warfare, 4 Apostles, prophets, martyrs, For all Your saints at rest, And all the noble throng Your holy name, O Jesus, Who wear the spotless raiment Forevermore be blest! Would live our lives for You. 3 Then let us praise the Father And worship God the Son And sing to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One, Till all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne, Ascribing pow’r and glory And praise to God alone. © 1993 Harlyn J. God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON Revelation 7:9–17 9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! EPISTLE LESSON 1 John 3:1–3 1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: (sung -- from LSB, p. 205) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 5:1–12 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the fifth chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. 1Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
