ALL SAINTS DAY / COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

November 1, 2020 9:00 AM

ABOUT TODAY’S SERVICE Today’s service is the combining of two special days into one. On the calendar of the Christian Church, November 1 is “All Saints Day” and November 2 is the “Commemoration of the Faithful Departed,” each of which can be celebrated on the first Sunday in November. Though slightly different, these two days are similar in that they both lead us to remember those Christians who have gone before us into glory, to thank God for their faithful witness, and to pledge ourselves to continuing their struggle to fight the good fight of faith until we too join the Church Triumphant – the Church in heaven.

WE WELCOME you to our service today, we THANK you for worshipping with us, and we INVITE all of you -- most especially our visitors – to return here each and every Sunday as we worship and glorify the God of our salvation! If you are new to the area and/or do not now have a church home, we invite you to speak with Pastor concerning church membership.

ORDER OF SERVICE

Service of Preparation

Prelude, Pastoral Welcome, Announcements

OPENING HYMN: “By All Your Saints in Warfare” # 517 (vss. 1, 4, 3)

1 By all Your saints in warfare, 4 Apostles, prophets, martyrs, For all Your saints at rest, And all the noble throng Your holy name, O Jesus, Who wear the spotless raiment Forevermore be blest! And raise the ceaseless song— For You have won the battle For these, passed on before us, That they might wear the crown; We offer praises due And now they shine in glory And, walking in their footsteps, Reflected from Your throne. Would live our lives for You. 3 Then let us praise the Father And worship God the Son And sing to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One, Till all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne, Ascribing pow’r and glory And praise to God alone.

CONFESSION OF SINS and ABSOLUTION:

Pastor: But with you there is forgiveness; People: therefore you are feared. Psalm 130:3-4

Pastor: O almighty God, merciful Father,

People: I, a poor miserable sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended you and justly deserve your punishment now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray you of your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent bitter sufferings and death of your beloved son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

Pastor: Upon this, your confession, I by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son  and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Service of the Word

ENTRANCE PSALM (): Psalm 31:1, 3, 5 (, Rev. 7:14)

Pastor: Since you are my rock and my fortress, People: for the sake of your name lead me and guide me.

Pastor: Into your hands I commit my spirit; People: redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth.

Pastor: Glory be to the Father and to the Son  and to the Holy Spirit; People: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Pastor: These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; People: they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

SALUTATION and OF THE DAY:

Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Pastor: Let us pray….

O almighty God, by whom we are graciously knit together as one and fellowship in the mystical body of Jesus Christ, our Lord, grant that we may follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living and come in the end to those unspeakable joys which you have prepared for those who love you; this we ask through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE: “Holy, Holy, Holy” # 507

1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!

FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON Revelation 7:9–17

9After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God!

EPISTLE LESSON 1 John 3:1–3

1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God!

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: (sung -- from LSB, p. 205)

Alleluia! ! Alleluia! These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 5:1–12

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the fifth chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord.

1Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY: “For All the Saints” # 677

1 For all the saints who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia!

3 Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old And win with them the victor’s crown of gold! Alleluia! Alleluia!

4 Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia! Alleluia!

5 And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia!

6 The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

7 But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day: The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of Glory passes on His way. Alleluia! Alleluia!

8  From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father,  Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia! Alleluia!

SERMON

Service of Response (Please place your Offerings in the plate at the door to the Sanctuary)

CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Apostles Creed

ALL: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life  everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY: “Create in Me” # 956

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. Amen.
