Anoectangium · POTTIACEAE 521 apex broadly obtuse to sharply acute or occasionally acuminate; costa sometimes short-excurrent as a mucro or rarely ending a few cells below apex, adaxial outgrowths absent, adaxial cells elongate, occasionally short-rectangular to quadrate near apex, in 2–3 rows, abaxial cells elongate; transverse section oval to reniform, adaxial epidermis absent to weakly developed, adaxial stereid band absent, guide cells 2–4 in 1 layer, hydroid strand absent, abaxial stereid band strong, semicircular to ovate in section, abaxial epidermis usually distinct; basal cells differentiated in a small group at base of costa, short-rectangular, little wider than distal cells, 2–4:1, usually thick-walled; distal medial cells subquadrate, occasionally elongate transversely or longitudinally, (5–)7–9(–15) µm wide, 1(–2):1(–2), papillae either massive, multifurcating and centered over lumens or simple to 2-fid, cell walls thin to greatly thickened, superficially flat to bulging. Specialized asexual reproduction rare, by gemmae in axils of leaves. Sexual condition dioicous; perigonia and perichaetia terminal on short lateral branches, interior perichaetial leaves convolute-sheathing, ovate-acuminate, 1–1.5 mm, laminal cells shortly rhomboidal to near apex. Seta yellow-brown, 0.3–0.8 cm, twisted clockwise proximally, occasionally counterclockwise distally. Capsule yellow-brown to brown, ovoid to elliptic, 0.5–1(–1.5) mm, exothecial cells rectangular, walls thin, annulus of two rows of weakly vesiculose cells; operculum long-rostrate, 0.4–0.6(–1.8) mm, cells in straight rows; peristome teeth absent. Calyptra cucullate, 1.2–1.5 (–2) mm, smooth. Spores 9–12(–19) µm, weakly to strongly papillose, light brown. -

Four species are added to the flora: Orthomnion javense (M.Fleisch.) T.J.Kop., Philonotis asperifolia Mitt., P. laii T.J.Kop., P. speciosa (Griff.) Mitt. syn. nov. (based on P. mercieri Paris & Broth.), and Plagiomnium wui (T.J.Kop.) Y.J.Yi & S.He. Eight species are excluded from the flora. Two taxa are considered doubtful. The flora now includes one species of Fleischerobryum, eight species of Philonotis, one species of Mnium Hedw. (doubtful), three species of Orthomnion Wills. and five species of Plagiomnium (one doubtful). The 15 species are divided into phytogeographical elements. Eight belong to the Southeast Asiatic temperate to meridional element, and seven to the Southeast Asiatic meridional to subtropical element. -

Introduction This paper is published as a memorial to David Catcheside who first discovered the new species and kindly suggested names to us for them prior to his death in June 1994, which predated compilation. The genus Thyum Hedw. (Bryaceae) was revised for Australia and its offshore territories by Ochi (1970) who listed 26 species. -

ChrIStoFFerSen3 (Received 12 September 2008; accepted in revised form 7 April 2009) ABSTRACT. The High Arctic is one of the regions most susceptible to climate change on a global scale. Increased temperature, precipitation, and cloud cover are anticipated in the region, with consequent increases in nutrient runoff to surface waters. Mosses are often the dominant submerged macrophyte in Arctic and High Arctic lakes. If the growth rate of mosses in these lakes is nutrient-limited, then production could increase with climate changes that result in higher nutrient concentrations. We conducted a laboratory study to 1) measure the growth response of Warnstorfia fluitans (Hedw.) Loeske from a High Arctic lake to nitrogen and phosphorus availability; and 2) determine whether growth rate was N- or P-limited by examining its relationship to internal P and N content. The growth rates of W. fluitans were generally low, ranging from 0.003 to 0.012 day-1. The growth rates increased with increasing plant P content, but not with increasing N content, indicating that moss growth was P-limited at low P availability in the experiment. Critical plant P concentration for maximum growth rate was 0.086% dry weight. This is the first time a critical P threshold has been calculated. The results imply that if climate changes result in increased P concentrations in surface waters, a higher production of moss could occur in High Arctic lakes. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We present molecular phylogenetic investigation of Thuidiaceae, especially on Thudium and Pelekium. Three chloroplast sequences (trnL-F, rps4, and atpB-rbcL) and one nuclear sequence (ITS) were analyzed. Data partitions were analyzed separately and in combination by employing MP (maximum parsimony) and Bayesian methods. The influence of data conflict in combined analyses was further explored by two methods: the incongruence length difference (ILD) test and the partition addition bootstrap alteration approach (PABA). Based on the results, ITS 1& 2 had crucial effect in phylogenetic reconstruction in this study, and more chloroplast sequences should be combinated into the analyses since their stability for reconstructing within genus of pleurocarpous mosses. We supported that Helodiaceae including Actinothuidium, Bryochenea, and Helodium still attributed to Thuidiaceae, and the monophyletic Thuidiaceae s. lat. should also include several genera (or species) from Leskeaceae such as Haplocladium and Leskea. In the Thuidiaceae, Thuidium and Pelekium were resolved as two monophyletic groups separately. The results from molecular phylogeny were supported by the crucial morphological characters in Thuidiaceae s. lat., Thuidium and Pelekium. About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

The presented list of Egyptian mosses includes 181 taxa in 56 genera, 17 families and 10 orders. Synonyms reported only from Egypt are given in a separate list. The distribution of the 181 mosses in the 11, hitherto, surveyed phytogeographic territories of Egypt shows that S, Mm, Cai and Di are the richest territories regarding the number of recorded taxa. Pottiaceae, Bryaceae and Funariaceae dominate the flora. Pohlia lescuriana (Sull.) Ochi is a new record to Egypt. Other relevant annotations are also given. Introduction The increasing interest in the taxonomy of the bryophytes, especially aimed at biodiversity conservation has stimulated the elaboration of updated and corrected checklists (Cortini 2001). During the last five decades six checklists of Egyptian mosses had been published by: Imam & Ghabbour (1972); EL-Saadawi and Abou EL-Kheir (1973); El-Saadawi & Badawi (1977); El-Saadawi et al. (1999); El-Saadawi et al. (2003) and Ros et al. (2013). (Bryaceae) for Italy and southern Europe Abstract Lo Giudice, R.: The firsl record of Bryum fenuisetum Limpr. (Bryaceae) [or Italy and southcm Europe. - FI. Medit. 6: 107-1 Il. 1996 - ISS N 1 120-4052. The first record of Bryum fenuisefum [or Italy and southem Europe was made on Etna (Sicily) during a research project on terrestri al bryophyte communitics. A morphological description, illustration, ecology and distribution are presented. The genus Bryum comprises c. 800 species widespread both in the northern and southern hemispheres, thougt America is its centre of diversity, followed by tropical Africa and Europe. In Italy, 47 specific and 9 infraspecific taxa are recorded; some species are broadly distributed in the wholc territory, e.g.: Bryum argenteum Hedw., B. bicolor Dicks., B. caespiticium Hedw., B. capillare Hedw., B. pseudotriquetrum (Hedw.) P. Gaertn. & al., B. torquescens Bruch & Schimp., etc; other species have a restricted or scattered distribution, possibly because they are misunderstood or unrecorded, e.g.: Bryum caloplzyllum R. Br., B. cellulare Hook., B. klinggraffii Schimp., B ..muteri Bruch. & al., B. stirtonii Schimp., B dunense A. J. E. Sm. ex Whitehouse, B. gemmilucens Wilcz. & Dem. (the later recently discovered in Sicily, see Lo Giudice 1996); finally other species should be excluded from the ltalian bryoflora since their identifications are uncertain or erroneous, e.g.: B. mamillatum Lindb. and B. warneum (Rohl.) Blandow (Cortini Pedrotti 1992). The genus is taxonomically difficult and the excellent results achieved by studies on criticaI groups (Crundwell & Nyholm 1964, Whitehouse 1966, Wilczek & Demaret 1974, 1976a, 1976b, Smith & Whiteouse 1978, etc.) emphasize the need for a monographic study of the genus Bryum. -
