January 2019 | The Lake-Front Magazine 3 Editor’s Note Dear Friends,

In the words of the immortal John Lennon: “Another year over, And a new one just be- gun”. New years often mean new beginnings, resolutions made (and abandoned), goals set and plans set in motion. 2018 was a busy one for us, and ended on a high note with holiday events and parties celebrating the season.

For those into winter sports, January is a highlight and our friends at Wisp have just finished almost $2 million in renovations to make their facility even better for guests and locals alike to visit and enjoy. Check out the Feature Story starting on page 6 for more information and our Skier’s Notebook returns on Page 52 with information about a new Apres Ski Theme Party they will be debuting on January 5th.

There are still a wide variety of events to enjoy this month and organizations to get involved with. There are over 350 non profit organizations in Garrett County, including faith-based communities, and plenty of ways to lend a helping hand and give back to this wonderful community.

For those of us who prefer a quiet book and cozy fire to while away the short winter afternoons, there are plenty of opportunities for that as well. Hope you find yours! isp Resort has been a favorite ski destination for the Mid-Atlantic since 1956 and its humble beginnings with one slope and a one-room lodge. WOver the years, original owner Helmuth “Ace” Heise, upgraded the resort, adding trails through the 1970’s and pioneering one of the best snowmaking systems on the East Coast. As the area grew and with the completion of Interstate 68 making access easier, the resort continued to expand with more trails, upgraded lift systems and more. In 2005, with the official opening of the North Camp Addition, 30% more skiable terrain was added, bringing the total up to 34 trails on 172 acres in addition to a snowtubing park, Mountain Coaster, Ice Skating rink and more.

The latest upgrades were made to the hotel itself. The 169 room slope side hotel began the major renovation overhaul in the Fall of 2015 and was finished up in the Fall of 2018. The Lodge at Wisp will welcome guests with significant changes and improvements to both the interior and exterior of the property. The upgrades are designed to give the hotel guests a heightened resort experience with more con- temporary accommodations, new outdoor gathering spaces, and an overall more modern, comfortable and functional design. The exterior changes include a new Winter Hours: Thursday - Monday 10-5pm Closed Tuesday & Wednesday entrance featuring a Porte Cocherè that creates a grand sense of arrival to the resort by welcoming guests with an outdoor gas fireplace, a timber-frame structure with stacked stone façade and thoughtful lighting. The new entrance surroundings are en- hanced with landscaping highlighted by a dramatic waterfall, benches and a pergola walkway. The hotel exterior received a fresh coat of paint in a new color palate of earth tones to match the Porte Cocherè. The North Courtyard was opened in Winter 2016 complete with a gas fire pit centerpiece surrounded with Adirondack chairs with mountain and sunset vistas. A large lighted logo sign of The Lodge at Wisp hangs on the northeast side of the building and guides guests to the new entrance.

It’s fitting that I should start off the New Year with the biggest news that I received during the previous year...2018, the year previous to 2019 which it will be when most of you read this...those of you who are read- ing this in late 2018 remember that 2018 is the previous year I am referring to, not 2017 which you would think is the previous year because it is previous to 2018 which is not the year I had in mind for reading. ANYWAY, Self-Proclaimed Long Time Reader Dan Mulholland, who didn’t tell me where he lives, has sent conclusive proof, not only that Sasquatches exist, but that they exist right here in our county. Although Dan didn’t specifically say this, it is my assumption that The Lake-Front is the only publication to have this powerful information. In a lame effort to keep up your interest enough that you will continue on reading this column, I am publishing the picture on a later page. As soon as I found Linda and had her retrieve the information and the picture from the computer (Dan sent this to me in a highly sophisticated and hi-tech form of communication that is new to most of us...I am only allowed to divulge the code name for this device, don’t feel bad if it is all new to you, too, “e-mail”) I drove as quickly as I could, observ- ing all speed limits, to Vice President in Charge of Tracking of FSW (Friendsville Sasquatch Watch- ers) James Hook. Off-Season Bounty Julie Frazee The second season of the Mountain Fresh Winter Farmers Market is underway with 240-321-1061 vendors selling everything from produce to meats and baked goods to crafts. This month’s market will be held Saturday, January 5th and January 19th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Garrett County Community Action building, 104 E. Center Street in Oakland.

The winter market, attended by about a dozen of the regular summer market ven- dors, was launched in 2017 to help give local farmers, bakers and artisans a place to sell their wares in the off- season. “We envisioned an indoor market where our vendors could sell our winter storage crops like potatoes, winter squash, carrots, and garlic as well as fresh-baked items, jams and jellies, and frozen meats,” said Cheryl DeBerry, Natural Resources Business Specialist for Garrett County Econom- ic Development. “Our vendors have gotten very creative in their offerings and have much more variety available this year.”

These markets are an off-shoot of the extremely popular Farmer’s Markets 32 The Lake-Front Magazine | January 2019 Continued... Frazee Photography for Family Portraits, Senior Pictures and Reunions

So very different from stained or blown glass, fused glass work is a medium done in a kiln. In the Sky Valley area of Deep Creek Lake, Snowbird Creations is the home studio for Turrentine. Here, visitors will find dichroic jewelry, tableware, clocks, vases, sculptures, soap and butter dishes, garden stakes, lamps, wind chimes, and ornaments. The artist states, “I love glass and the col- ors and how you can combine them to create artistic pieces. I want my work to reflect the beauty of this area: the birds, the fall colors, the lake, whether abstract or lifelike. I love painting with glass.” She uses a technique called pâte de verre where powdered glass is used to form a sludge that can be blended with other colors to create a painting. 2018 was “The Year of The Bird” and being inspired by nature, Turrentine dedicated her creativity to fused glass birds us- ing the pâte de verre technique. Her recently created birds can be found perched on branches which are then attached to wooden background frames that her husband makes for her. Larger birds sit on logs or driftwood gathered from the woods near her home. Even the dead roots of mountain laurel will be used, each bringing an- other level of artistic merit to the designs. The basic fusing technique begins with a base of glass becomes the ‘canvas’. Layers of color are placed on top. The piece is fired in a kiln with temperature rang- ing from 1410-1475 degrees, de- pending if the finish is to be smooth, contour, or tack fused. The heat of the kiln literally melts all the glass together forming a flat piece. From there, the work can be placed over a mold and slumped to create the desired shape. The entire process takes three days. Turrentine is a retired profes- sional singer, conductor, and pia- nist. She was a military musician for 20 years and performed with the Concert Band/Singing Sergeants. She describes the career as a fabulous opportunity that enabled her to perform all over the world as well as at the White House during the holiday season.

36 The Lake-Front Magazine | January 2019 Continued... January 2019 | The Lake-Front Magazine 37 Artisitcally Speaking Continued Upon retiring to Garret County, the multitalented artist became the Artistic Director of the Garrett Choral Society and held the position for nine years. Her work with glass began around the year 2000 while still active duty in the USAF. She attended a workshop with Avery Anderson, an internationally recognized fused glass artist. Fusing glass every day during the workshop was an exciting experience where she learned about the necessary equipment and pro- cesses needed to create a finished and polished product. Passing that excitement along to oth- ers, the artist has taught classes to students and adults pulling from her experience as a public school teacher prior to joining the Air Force. With her husband, Turrentine is an avid birdwatcher. Together they have traveled all over the world participating in birding tours. She loves to garden and her home and studio have been one of the featured locations on the Moun- tain Laurel Garden Club’s ‘Secret County Gar- den Tour’. Cooking is another passion. Like the glass creation, cooking requires the right equip- ment and Turrentine claims to have every pos- sible kitchen gadget! She collects fine art and porcelain horses. And her camera and binoculars are always nearby enabling her to capture wonderful surprises as she travels throughout the area. She grew up in Uniontown, PA, and majored in voice and piano at West Virginia University. The painstaking hours of practicing the piano were easily transferred to her passion for glass and the hours it takes to create a piece of art glass. “Just as music was and is a joy in my life, so is mixing glass colors and seeing what the kiln has in store for me. My music, my glass work - it’s all about putting passion into whatever I do.” Turrentine’s work can be found at several locations around the area. She is a regular showing artist at Garrett County Arts Council’s Gallery Shop in downtown Oakland, at The Highlands Art Gallery in Davis, WV, and at Four Storm Artist Gallery near Swallow Falls State Park. Her home studio is open from time to time during special occasions including the GCAC Artist Studio Tour in July. The artist can be reached at 301-387-4624 to arrange an appointment at other times of the year. Visit The Gallery Shop at 108 S. Second St, in downtown Oakland on Monday- Saturday from 10:00am-5:30 pm to see a sampling of Turrentine’s glass as well as the artwork of many other regional artists. The Garrett County Arts Council is funded by the Maryland State Arts Council, Garrett County Government, and through mem- bership support. For more information or to become a member, contact GCAC at 301-334-6580, visit garrettarts.org, and like Garrett County Arts Council and The Gal- lery Shop on Facebook. In closing, Turrentine says, “I believe that the arts are an important part of every- one’s education. I, to this day, remember my art classes, my piano lessons and how 301-387-7800 II THEGREENETURTLE.COM I was encouraged to express myself. This is what is important: creativity. I believe that every student has a gift but it is up to us as teachers and parents to nurture that talent.” We couldn’t agree more, Julie! 38 The Lake-Front Magazine | January 2019 301-387-7800 II THEGREENETURTLE.COM

January 2019 | The Lake-Front Magazine 47 Community News Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County, Maryland See Huge Growth Thanks to Post-Labor Day School Start; Area Continues to See Record Overall Tourism Increases

The first quarter of Fiscal Year 2019 (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019) is off to a good start for tourism in the Deep Creek Lake area and Garrett County, Maryland with an 8.0% increase in county accommodations sales, a 6.3% increase in Admissions & Amusement collections, a 128% increase in Visitor Guide requests and a 17.13% increase in visitors to the Chamber’s website, visitdeepcreek.com. While the Chamber at- tributes much of the continued growth in tourism to aggressive marketing efforts and new ad strategies, the newly implemented post-Labor Day start for Maryland Public Schools is also being credited with the increases. With Maryland students returning to school after Labor Day rather than in mid-to-late August, Garrett County saw a 24.2% increase in county accommodations collections in August 2018 over August 2017. “Anecdotally, we knew that Garrett County was seeing a positive economic impact from the later school start and now we have the empirical data,” said Nicole Christian, Chamber president & CEO. “Garrett County is capitalizing on our continued aggressive marketing strategies coupled with pro-growth policies like the post Labor Day school, as evidenced by the tourism increases for the first quarter of FY19. These stats validate that our efforts are effective and yielding strong results for our community.” According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, Garrett County’s recent increases even outpaced Mary- land’s tourism growth. For Fiscal Year 2018 (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018), Maryland grew sales tax revenues specific to tourism 2.3%, while Garrett County grew tourism sales tax revenues 4.8% during the same time period. While Garrett County grew recreation and amusement places sales tax collections 7.6%, Maryland saw a decrease of 1.7%. Maryland grew lodging sales tax collections 2.2% and restaurant sales tax collections 2.5% while Garrett County grew them 4.6% and 5.5%, respectively. “According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, visitors to Maryland spent nearly $17.7 billion generating $2.4 billion in state and local taxes,” said Christian. “Here in Garrett County, tourism is a key industry and critical component of economic development that creates jobs, supports businesses, and generates local taxes that fund schools, roads, infrastructure, etc. Without the revenue generated from tourism, each house- hold would need to pay an additional $1,100 in taxes annually. I’ve heard Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill say that Economic Development is a team sport; the Chamber’s aggressive marketing strategies, as the Destination Marketing Organization for the County, are ensuring that Garrett County Tourism is excelling at doing its part to grow this key industry in Maryland.” Garrett County experienced similar tourism increases in fiscal year 2018 with a 7.0% increase in county accommodations sales, a 9.3% increase in heads on beds, a 29.5% in Visitor Guide requests and a 6.9% increase in visitors to the Chamber’s website, visitdeepcreek.com. The western-most county in Maryland, Garrett County is home to Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, Deep Creek Lake, Wisp Resort, the state’s only ski resort, and Adventure Sports Center International, one of only two recirculating whitewater courses in the western hemisphere. Garrett County is less than a three- hour drive from the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, two hours from Pittsburgh, PA, Winchester, VA and Hagerstown, MD and a 45-minute drive from Morgantown, WV and Cumberland, MD.
