German Life and Letters 59:2 April 2006 0016–8777 (print); 1468–0483 (online) POST-1990 SCREEN MEMORIES: HOW EAST AND WEST GERMAN CINEMA REMEMBERS THE THIRD REICH AND THE HOLOCAUST DANIELA BERGHAHN ABSTRACT The following article examines the contribution of German feature films about the Third Reich and the Holocaust to memory discourse in the wake of German unifi- cation. A comparison between East and West German films made since the 1990s reveals some startling asymmetries and polarities. While East German film-makers, if they continued to work in Germany’s reunified film industry at all, made very few films about the Third Reich, West German directors took advantage of the recent memory boom. Whereas films made by East German directors, such as Erster Verlust and Der Fall Ö, suggest, in liberating contradiction to the anti-fascist interpretation of history, that East Germany shared the burden of guilt, West German productions subscribe to the normalisation discourse that has gained ideological hegemony in the East-West-German memory contest since unification. Films such as Aimée & Jaguar and Rosenstraße construct a memory of the past that is no longer encumbered by guilt, principally because the relationship between Germans and Jews is re-imag- ined as one of solidarity. As post-memory films, they take liberties with the trau- matic memory of the past and, by following the generic conventions of melodrama, family saga and European heritage cinema, even lend it popular appeal. I. FROM DIVIDED MEMORY TO COMMON MEMORY Many people anticipated that German reunification would result in a new era of forgetfulness and that a line would be drawn once and for all under the darkest chapter of German history – the Third Reich and the Holocaust. -

Jarausch) Since its creation in 1950 as a subsidiary of the Cultural League, the East German Writers Union embodied a fundamental tension, one that was never resolved during the course of its forty-year existence. The union served two masters – the state and its members – and as such, often found it difficult fulfilling the expectations of both. In this way, the union was an expression of a basic contradiction in the relationship between writers and the state: the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED) demanded ideological compliance, yet these writers also claimed to be critical, engaged intellectuals. This dissertation examines how literary intellectuals and SED cultural officials contested and debated the differing and sometimes contradictory functions of the Writers Union and how each utilized it to shape relationships and identities within the literary community and beyond it. The union was a crucial site for constructing a group image for writers, both in terms of external characteristics (values and goals for participation in wider society) and internal characteristics (norms and acceptable behavioral patterns guiding interactions with other union members). -

Wolf Biermann, Warte nicht auf bessre Zeiten! Die Autobiographie, Propyläen Verlag, Berlin 2016, 543 S., geb., 28,00 €. Wolf Biermann hat ein großes, ja großartiges Buch geschrieben. Die Autobiografie ist mehr als nur die Selbstsicht des wichtigsten Liedermachers der antistalinistischen Opposition in der SED-Diktatur, sie ist ein Parforce-Ritt durch die deutsch-deutsche Zeitgeschichte. Es beginnt mit der Schilderung des Schicksals und des Widerstands gegen den Nationalsozialismus der kommunistischen Arbeiterfamilie Biermann in Hamburg. Hier werden zwei Konstanten im Leben Wolf Biermanns deutlich: sein bis zum Anfang der 1980er-Jahre reichendes Bekenntnis zum Kommunismus und die Trauer um den jüdischen Vater, der in Auschwitz sein Leben lassen musste. Viele Stationen aus Biermanns Leben waren bis zu dieser Autobiografie öffentlich bereits durch seine zahlreichen Lieder und diese kommentierende Erzählungen bekannt. Sie gewinnen jedoch eine andere emotionale Wucht in der zusammenfassenden Erzählung. Zuerst gilt das für den Überlebenskampf im 1943 verheerend bombardierten Hamburg. Genauso dicht ist die Schilderung des kommunistischen Milieus in der Hansestadt nach der Befreiung vom Nationalsozialismus, das schließlich auch direkt mit seinem Wechsel 1953 in die SED-Diktatur zu tun hatte. Der Schüler Biermann erlebte hier schnell die Verfolgung der Mitglieder der evangelischen Jungen Gemeinde, wandte sich in seiner Internatsschule öffentlich dagegen und sollte trotzdem als Spitzel für die Geheimpolizei geworben werden. Auch hier widerstand er und sein Selbstbewusstsein als Kommunist blieb bei dieser ersten Prüfung »unbeschädigt«. Das ändert sich auch in seiner Zeit in Ost-Berlin als Student an der Humboldt-Universität und als Regie- assistent am Brecht-Theater »Berliner Ensemble« nicht. Hier begann aber das, was Biermann für die ostdeutschen Oppositionellen so wichtig machte, ja Verehrung erzeugte, die bis heute bei vielen anhält. -

WHEN THE WIND TURNS: HELD FOR QUESTIONING By Frank Beyer Hermann Kant’s novel Der Aufenthalt is a memoir. Kant narrates his story in retrospect, after much time has passed. There are childhood memories and inner monologs, numerous anecdotal digressions, and—as is common in Kant’s works—linguistic artistry and a proliferation of words that sometimes obfuscate the core of the story. In 1978, both East German Television (DFF) and the DEFA Studio for Feature Films inquired as to whether I could imagine making a screen adaptation of Kant’s novel. The broadcasting corporation was prepared to produce a mini-series. I was not very keen on the types of television adaptations being produced at the time, however, which entailed slicing up thick books into several parts and subjecting viewers to individual parts on consecutive evenings. Later, I spoke with [scriptwriter] Wolfgang Kohlhaase, who knew the novel well. Eventually, he suggested that we should not be so ambitious as to try to make an adaptation encompassing the entire novel. Changing the novel’s narrative perspective had an impact and changed the main character. In the novel, Mark Niebuhr is steadfast; he always has the last word and makes jokes even in the worst situations. In the film, however, he is a young man of few words, introverted—somebody who becomes weaker as the plot progresses, but whose will desperately clings to his threatened existence. -

A Short Review of the German Literature about the Spanish War The German Writer Willi Bredel, Captain of the Thaelmann Battalion, 1937 Sketch written by Herbert Schneider Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel 2012 2 A short review of the German literature about the Spanish War The most famous literature about the Spanish War for the political left was provided for the political left by English, American or French writers like Ernest Hemingway's „For whom the bell tolls“, Orwell's „Homage on Catalonia“, Malraux's „L'espoir“ and Bernanos' „Les Grands Cimetières sous la Lune“. Such works with their international significance don't exist in the German culture although it exists a very important number of left wing but also bourgeois literature about the Spanish War. Two writers can be named as symbols for wide engagement of German writers on these themes: Bertolt Brecht and his play „The guns of Mrs. Carrar” and the journalistic engagement of famous Thomas and Heinrich Mann for the Spanish Republic. The German left wing and most of the liberal orientated writers emigrated after the takeover of the nazis. The Spanish War was for them a signal for the liberation of Germany. So the whole German emigration was engaged for the spanish people. The main item was the description of the combat of the Spanish People and their confederates. So novels and short stories are the main instruments to express this item and a lot of works have a documentary character. Many works are journalistic and eyewitness accounts but on the other side many novels are very skillful. -
