Ultramafic Geocology of South and Southeast Asia

Rajakaruna5,6* Abstract Globally, ultramafc outcrops are renowned for hosting foras with high levels of endemism, including plants with specialised adaptations such as nickel or manganese hyperaccumulation. Soils derived from ultramafc regoliths are generally nutrient-defcient, have major cation imbalances, and have concomitant high concentrations of potentially phytotoxic trace elements, especially nickel. The South and Southeast Asian region has the largest surface occur- rences of ultramafc regoliths in the world, but the geoecology of these outcrops is still poorly studied despite severe conservation threats. Due to the paucity of systematic plant collections in many areas and the lack of georeferenced herbarium records and databased information, it is not possible to determine the distribution of species, levels of end- emism, and the species most threatened. However, site-specifc studies provide insights to the ultramafc geoecology of several locations in South and Southeast Asia. The geoecology of tropical ultramafc regions difers substantially from those in temperate regions in that the vegetation at lower elevations is generally tall forest with relatively low levels of endemism. On ultramafc mountaintops, where the combined forces of edaphic and climatic factors inter- sect, obligate ultramafc species and hyperendemics often occur. Forest clearing, agricultural development, mining, and climate change-related stressors have contributed to rapid and unprecedented loss of ultramafc-associated habitats in the region. The geoecology of the large ultramafc outcrops of Indonesia’s Sulawesi, Obi and Halmahera, and many other smaller outcrops in South and Southeast Asia, remains largely unexplored, and should be prioritised for study and conservation. -

Genetic divergence among H. mermerodes moths feeding on different host tree species was much lower than among several Homona species. Genetic divergence between haplotypes from New Guinea and Australia was also less than interspecific divergence. Whereas molecular species identification methods may reveal cryptic species in some generalist herbivores, these same methods may confirm polyphagy when identical haplotypes are reared from multiple host plant families. A lectotype for the species is designated, and a summarized bibliography and illustrations including male genitalia are provided for the first time. -

The group, primarily distinguished by the striated foremargin of the head and long antennae situated near the anterodorsal corners of the eyes, was subsequently placed as a subtribe of Drabescini of Deltocephalinae by Dmitriev (2004) and Zahniser & Dietrich (2010, 2013). Work on the group since Zhang & Webb (1996) has resulted in the description of several new taxa, mainly from China (see checklist). So far, Paraboloponina contains 39 known genera, including 16 genera from China. -

Flora of West Tropical Africa (Revised) Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the MSc in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants Abstract The pan-tropical Drypetes Vahl is a genus of 225 species of predominantly understorey rain forest trees recently segregated from Euphorbiaceae Juss. s.l . and placed within Putranjivaceae Meisn. with Putranjiva and Sibangea . Generic limits within Putranjivaceae remain unclear, notably between Drypetes and Sibangea . Within Drypetes rates of species discovery are high and yet the genus is somewhat neglected in the literature and many herbarium samples remain undetermined. Using herbarium material, this study examined approximately one third of the known species. Consistent floral characters that separate the three genera in Putranjivaceae are sepal shape, aestivation and persistence; stamen and locule numbers; ovary shape; the form of the stigma and the presence or absence of an intrastaminal nectiferous disk. Drypetes exhibits variability in floral characters: stamen number and placement is notably labile, and locule numbers, stigma and disk shapes are variable. Geographical differences in floral characters emerge, but conclusions are tentative in view of the restricted sampling. Limited phylogenetic studies hypothesise that Sibangea is nested within a clade of African Drypetes which argues for further study of this interesting, but neglected, group. We guessed 30 people met at the Petford Road turnoff, threatening to block the WHAT'S HAPPENING.........4 road with their massed four wheel drives. CAIRNS BRANCH ..........4 The group trundled off to the Great Dividing Range Range powerline corridor, with a TABLELANDS BRANCH....4 splinter group heading to Stannary Hills proper. On the Range we found flowers more typical of a temperate heathland - Velleia pubescens, Mirbelia speciosa, Cryptandra debilis and TOWNSVILLE BRANCH....4 tiny donkey orchids, Diuris oporina. After lunch at the historic Watsonville Cemetery, Peter Radke lead us to a site where we could see all of the Stannary Hills iconic species - Grevillea glossadenia, Eucalyptus atrata, Eucalyptus pachycalyx, Acacia longipedunculata, and the unique but uncharismatic Acacia purpureapetala. Thanks to everyone for making this a fun, unwieldy, and fascinating day. Ciri anatomi memperkuat ciri morfologi atau menyelesaikan permasalahan kerancuan identifikasi secara morfologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakter anatomi daun pada 11 spesies famili Phyllanthaceae yang ditemukan di wilayah eksplorasi Kabupaten Banggai Kepulauan. Metode yang digunakan adalah pembuatan preparat paradermal dan transversal helai dan tangkai daun. Karakter yang diamati pada setiap preparat adalah karakter paradermal yaitu epidermis dan derivatnya, karakter transversal meliputi bentuk dan jumlah lapisan epidermis, mesofil, keberadaan kristal dan karakter khusus spesies serta bentuk berkas pengangkut pada tulang daun dan tangkai daun. Berdasarkan preparat paradermal daun diperoleh tipe daun hipostomatik dengan tipe stomata umumnya parasitik dan anomositik, dan ditemukan variasi tipe stomata anisositik pada Baccaurea nanihua dan Antidesma excavatum. Pada preparat transversal diperoleh tipe daun dorsiventral, bentuk epidermis dan jaringan tiang yang beragam. Pada organ tangkai daun, ditemukan empat tipe berkas pengangkut, yaitu bentuk lonjong dengan dua tambahan berkas pengangkut, bentuk dasar menyerupai ginjal, bentuk semi-lunar, dan bentuk lonjong dengan satu berkas pengangkut.
