Roberts Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Lolium perenne, Poa annua, and Agrostis stolonifera are turfgrass species commonly grown on golf course fairways; however, they are susceptible to dollar spot (Clarireedia spp.). Field studies were conduction to assess: 1) the effects of organic fertilizer treatments and fungicide programs on dollar spot severity; and 2) the impact of organic amendments on dollar spot severity and residual fungicide efficacy. Alternating applications of organic and conventional fungicides reduced seasonal dollar spot severity to the same degree as conventional fungicides. Dollar spot was more severe in Lolium perenne and Poa annua treated with organic fungicides. On A. stolonifera, organic biosolids compost, biochar, and vermicompost amendments suppressed dollar spot to the same degree as conventional fertilizer in year one of the trial, while dollar spot was more severe on A. stolonifera fertilized with organic biosolids compost in year two. Fertilizer treatments had no effect on residual fungicide efficacy on A. stolonifera. Historically, research mostly focused on understanding toxicity of endophyte-derived compounds on grazing livestock. However, endophyte-derived compounds also provide protection against invertebrate pests, disease, and other environmental stresses, which is important for ensuring yield and persistence of pastures. A preliminary screen of 30 strains using an in vitro dual culture bioassay identified 18 endophyte strains with antifungal activity. The novel strains NEA12, NEA21, and NEA23 were selected for further investigation as they are also known to produce alkaloids associated with protection against insect pests. Antifungal activity of selected endophyte strains was confirmed against three grass pathogens, Ceratobasidium sp., Dreschlera sp., and Fusarium sp., using independent isolates in an in vitro bioassay. NEA21 and NEA23 showed potent activity against Ceratobasidium sp. -

This one-year study assessed management strategies that integrated soil conditioners (fish emulsion, fish hydrolysate, worm castings, and spent mushroom compost) with a rolling treatment to reduce dollar spot severity. None of the soil conditioners reduced dollar spot in the greenhouse or field studies, nor was there any improvement in turf color, clippings, root dry weight or tissue N content. The rolling treatment had a significant effect on turf color and reduced dollar spot severity at one location and only when disease pressure was high. The results indicated that the use of soil conditioners would not be a recommended practice for dollar spot when disease pressure is high but rolling could be included as a management practice to suppress dollar spot. Indeed, a good looking lawn is as important to the total landscape picture as a shined pair of dress shoes is to formal attire. The two just naturally go together. In response to the many inquiries about home lawn care and problems, the intent of this NDSU Extension publication is to assist the homeowner first in identifying these problems and, secondly, providing advice on actions they can take to solve these problems. Our initial emphasis will be to adjust or modify cultural practices to minimize or, in some cases, eliminate the pest. We also provide options for chemical use in case the problem has not been solved. Each author has contributed to this publication based on his or her expertise: Alan Zuk on typical diseases observed on home lawns, Janet Knodel on insect problems; and Ron Smith in dealing with distractive weeds. In surveying the retail market, we noted the wide availability of combination products, with herbicides and fertilizer being the most common. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Department of Plant Pathology is one of nine academic units in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University, and is the sole academic unit dedicated to plant-microbe interactions in Ohio's Higher Education system. The department consists of faculty, students, post-docs, and staff located on the Columbus and Wooster campuses of OSU. Funding comes from the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) line items, and from OSU Academic Programs; higher levels of financial support are obtained from external grants, contracts and gifts. Research programs in the department encompass basic investigations of plant-microbe interactions at the molecular level to studies of epidemics at the population level, and, in parallel, mission-oriented investigations of management tactics for diseases of major crops and forest trees. Graduate education is one of the foundations of the department. Currently, there are about 2.5 graduate students per faculty advisor; 217 students have enrolled in our graduate program over the last two decades, and many of our graduates have gone on to leadership roles in academia, government and private industry. The department is fully committed to undergraduate education, with a major in Plant Health Management, a minor in Plant Pathology, a new Plant Pathology major, and courses designed for non-majors. Although our UG enrollment in our major is small, our students are very successful, and 70% ultimately enroll in graduate school. Through the use of oral, printed, and electronic media, we are at the forefront in the college in outreach and engagement efforts, primarily through our Extension education programming. -

Lawmakers Face Limited Options to Attack Obama Regulations
Jan. 11, 2017 Volume 13, Number 2 Lawmakers face limited options to attack Obama regulations President-elect Donald Trump has made clear he plans to make good on his campaign promises to undo major parts of President Obama’s regulatory agenda. But that could be heavy lifting for the executive branch, requiring a time-consuming notice-and-comment process that could take many months or years to complete. So, many in the agriculture and energy sectors are looking to Congress to take steps that could block enforcement of several rules, or even kill them. The surest, and quickest, way to repeal a rule is through the use of the Congressional Review Act, a 21- year-old law that gives Congress a defined time period to vote down new regulations. The CRA has been used successfully just once, in 2000, to kill OSHA ergonomics standards imposed by the Clinton administration. President Obama has vetoed five CRA resolutions, including measures aimed at killing the “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) rule and the EPA’s greenhouse gas limits on electric utilities. This year, there will be a GOP president in the White House who would sign a CRA resolution. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. But major hurdles remain. A rule isn’t eligible for CRA review unless it was issued in the final 60 legislative days of the last Congress, which means any regulations finalized before the middle of last June won’t be affected. And while the CRA resolutions can’t be filibustered in the Senate – they only require a majority vote to be approved – getting a majority of the Senate to kill a regulation that is, say, seen as important to public health won’t be easy either.
