Ted: 9:31:12 5/7/ 1987 Here is a slightly edited version of the prologue I sent to you yesterday. I am only slightly happier with it.*. but if it's not too late please use this version.• *. and pass on any improvements you might feel appropriate for my review.

PROLOGUE This is a unique moment in the history of life on earth. For the first time, through the creative process we call technology, we humans have gathered the energy and resources to allow people, and eventually other life forms as well, to leave the historic confines of the planetary womb. This capability, which WILL be used, can be directed to either enhance life and open the evolutionary process to the limitlessness of space..• or to utterly destroy all civilization and perhaps all present and future life on this planet. What is demanded is a new and enlarged vision on the part of the human community as to who we are and the historic process in which we are involved. Without this transformative vision, our "old ways" will inevitably lead us toward self destruction and the anhiliation of life. With a new vision we have the possibility of being "born" childlike out of Gaia, our earth mother, into the infinite cosmos, with all the unknowable potential of the newborn. This seemingly amorphous concept is not some abstract intellectual vision but rather the outcome of my direct experience of flying around this planet for 10 days on . My personal participation in that historic project which first placed a human being on another world (the ), combined with my personal experience of seeing the beauty of our planet from the vantage of space, forced me to think seriously about what we, the human community, are involved in beyond the surface issues of national pride, technological gymnastics, and scientific curiosity. I realized that from the larger perspective of human evolution (or the evolution of consciousness) that we are involved in an unprecedented transition in which we must move, at our peril, beyond the limiting conceptual boundary of nation state (and perhaps even self). This huge challenge, to go beyond the destructive "you or me” thinking of the past is made absolutely essential by our marriage to technology and the increasing power embodied within that union. I do not believe we have the option to divorce ourselves as a human community from that power; we must, rather, re-envision ourselves and our inter-relatedness to one another and to all life, in order to direct that gathering power toward life enhancing behavior.

Spaceflight, by its nature, and the continuing development of space technology, bring these options for collective death or collective birth to our immediate attention. Spaceflight, primarily through direct human involvement, also provides us an essential glimpse of the one-ness of all life on earth, together circling our local sun, limited only by our own concepts and visions. It is to enlarge this collective vision that I formed the Association of Space Explorers• *.. an institutional mechanism, composed of other people who have shared the experience of seeing this small beautiful planet as the home of all life. Together, by sharing our experience and vision, and being willing to act on it, we might , through public influence, enlarge the collective understanding of what we are involved in as a human family •.. and what our responsibility for cosmic citizenship entails. Rusty

THE INSPIRATION

Edgar Mitchell said: Suddenly, from behind the rim of the moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel « .•a light, delicate sky blue sphere laced with slowly swirling veils of white * » » rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery.

It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth.••home. Even after all his preparation time, watching Earthrise, it took Dr. Mitchell moments to come to terms with the experience. One expects that it must be an enormous mental task to absorb the emotional and spiritual impact of gazing at the Earth from a desolate, isolated surface void of all life, thousands of miles away. What is it about this experience that challenges the human brain to accept that the Earth is, in essence, one tiny ball in a void of space, finite, self dependent, fragile and unique? Looking back from the void, where is one's-truest, deepest emotional allegiance directed? said: "That whole process of what it is you identify with begins to shift• * •you begin to recognize that your identity is with that whole thing". THE RESPONSE

The transformation Rusty and Ed experienced was so profound, so empowering, that they both felt they needed to share their transformation with the world. Together with several colleagues, they decided to investigate the possibility of convening a meeting of space travellers from all over the world to share and and make sense of the experience, and then, drawing on the strength of the collective experience, to develop an international Association whose purpose would be to transmit to the world this experience and to engage in educational activities derivative of it. ACTION/REACTION

As they proceeded, they discovered that many of their fellow space travellers had an equally strong desire to orchestrate expression of their experience. After three years of talks, the Association of Space Explorers was founded by twenty five explorers from thirteen countries. The Report from the 1st Congress says: "The and cosmonauts met together to explore their shared vision of the planet, resulting from their experiences in space, which unites them in a way that transcends their cultural differences. All the space fliers..* acknowledged they had been substantially affected during their flights by a heightened. ..awareness of how delicate and potentially creative our Earth is". The impression was universal. Sultan Al Saud of Saudi Arabia said of his flight at the gathering: "The first day -or so in orbit we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to continents. By the fifth day we were aware only of one earth."

Soviet cosmonaut said: "Astronauts and Cosmonauts are the handful of people who have had the good fortune to see the earth from afar and to realize how tiny and fragile it is. We hope that all peoples of the Earth can understand this, and treat this Earth as the home in which they were born, the home in which they live, and the home where their children and grandchildren will live after them. For Leonov, the sacred Russian term "rodina", meaning native birthland, had taken on new meaning. CONSENSUS

The Space Explorers set forth several goals at the Congress, which are in essence a group response to their shared experience. To communicate to the world the nature of space fliers 1 transformative experiences, to globalize awareness of humanity's responsibility for the future as we determine the vision with which we enter space, a major step in our evolution, and to promote international cooperation in exploring space for the purpose of wisely and consciously accessing space as a resource for all people on Earth: all of these aspirations reflect a deep seated desire on the part of the explorers to work together to use their collective weight to articulate a new vision of the world as it is and positive vision of what our future could be. TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPLANATION OF CONSENSUS

How are these goals rooted in the fliers 1 space experiences? Why share the experience? Whence the concern about humanity * s responsibility for the future? How does a dramatic view of the Earth compel astronauts to work together to educate people about the need to explore space cooperatively? What is their vision of the Earth today and in the future? How does a group of busy pilots and engineers intend to spread these visions around the world, and can they really be effective in transforming the consciousness of people around the world?

To answer these questions, we return to Ed's and Rusty * s impressions. Imagine the moments Ed took to achieve the sublime and emotionally overwhelming realization that the Earth is his, his only, his shared home, shared with his family, his species, with all life. Millions of years ago the planet was a swirling ball of lava. The interceding years have produced a miraculous variety of life forms, of cultures, of knowledge, of conscious experience. This is life. This is the human experience. This is all that we know. This temperate and lush product of millenia of geophysical and biological evolution, this ornament, this island oasis in a black void, is HOME. It * s all we have. To recognize this, to feel this, is already a transformation. Upon further reflection, instinctive responses arise: a profound love for the planet; a profound feeling of belonging, of sharing this sacred ecosphere; an absolute mutuality of destiny; a concern for survival, for the health and happiness of all posterity; a deeply emotional desire that everything be alright with the planet.

These powerful feelings have moved many of the explorers to act, to share these feelings, to work in the most effective way possible to ensure that life on Earth remains ecologically and spiritually intact. The feelings of belonging, of sharing, of mutuality led them to seek out their peers who share the experience in order to articulate it, to spread it, to establish an ongoing institutional framework to share it with the world. Working together cooperatively, they felt, was by nature vital to the long term success of their mission. Group support, planet-wide composition, diverse cultural background experience, diverse ideas for action, a global presence: these elements were key to blazing the right trail. Based on the same set of feelings, the Space Explorers understand that the cooperative mode MUST be uppermost in guiding all human activity in space. Drawing from his profound concern for the future well-being of the Earth, Rusty said: "Perhaps the most important consequence of our vision of is the precedent we set for the future. As the roots of current world events and circumstances were shaped by the thinking of our predecessors so will we shape the nature of humanity's activities in space with our attitudes and consequent behaviour.'*

If one assumes that ultimately, eventually, humankind will indeed emerge into the cosmos, then, in light of a genuine concern for our future well- being, one must ask: which attitudes, which ways of thinking in today's world, will lead to a harmonious, safe and healthy human future in space? The Space Explorers * experience asserts that cooperation, not destructive competition, is the only possible way * The seeds of our future in space are sown with the attitude with which we enter space, Cooperation is essential to a secure future in space. Cooperation is not only the absence of destructive competition. It is a mode that intrinsically provides recognition and understanding of the potential space offers as a resource for all nations and people. Again, the feelings of belonging, of sharing, of mutuality of destiny point to no other way than to make use of space for the benefit of all humanity. We are all inextricably linked up in the future together, and must all share the responsibilities and benefits that arise.

A growing responsibility for the future is an integral part of the transformational process. GDR cosmonaut Sigmund Jaehn said: MBefore I flew I was already aware of how small and vulnerable our planet is; but only when I saw it from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that Humankind * s most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations'*. Seeing the Earth from a distance through space evidently catalyzes a sensitivity to the Earth as an entity that continues through time. The future becomes a paramount consideration in how we behave as a species on a daily basis. It becomes clear that a shift in conciousness, from one of dominion to one of stewardship, is essential. In taking what we need from the Earth, in depositing our wastes, in relating to each other, we must bear in mind that we must think not only of ourselves but of future residents of the planet.

If the desired effect is to be achieved, these ideas must be shared with people all over the world. The Space Explorers know that part of influencing a paradigm shift is to share the experience, to the extent possible, of space flight. Rusty said: "You look down and see the surface of that globe that you * ve lived on all this time, and you know all those people down there, and they are like you, they are you and somehow you represent them. You are up there as a sensing element,-that point out on the end, and that ’s a humbling feeling. It's a feeling that says you have a responsibility. It's not for yourself. The eye that doesn't see doesn't do justice to the body. That's why its there, that's why you're out there. And somehow you recognize that you're a piece of this total life. And you're out there on that forefront and you have to bring that back somehow. And that becomes a rather special responsibility and it tells you something about your relationship with this thing we call life." The elements of this outline of the mission of the Association provide the component parts of a new vision of the Earth shared by the Explorers as well as of their vision of the future. Of course, each ASE member has his own personal vision. What has been related above, however, are common feelings of what the Earth represents to the fliers, and of how they must respond to seeing it from afar. The Earth is the sacred Mother of all life, to be treated with reverence, respect, and sensitivity. If we can meet the challenge of treating her this way, we will be well on the way to a future of ecological sanity and balance, to a future based on a tradition of caring for, rather than raping, Earth and Earth life. TRANSFORMING VISION INTO REAL PROJECTS

The Threshold Foundation supported the Esalen Soviet American Exchange Program during the period when Director Jim Hickman -was orchestrating /cosmonaut dialogues. Doughnut John Steiner was instrumental in securing Threshold funding for the Esalen Projects, and has lent strong philosophical and moral support along the way. The astronaut /cosmonaut dialogues turned into the Association of Space Explorers at the 1st Planetary Congress. Since then, the ASE-USA, the 501 C 3 which coordinates and implements ASE activities in the U.S., has been funded primarily through individual donations, though a recent grant was secured from the Sunflower Foundation for two of the projects. Of its seven current projects the ASE-USA seeks funding from the Threshold Foundation for four. Each of them are educational in nature, and each seeks to express the vision detailed in the paragraphs above. BOOK OF EARTH PHOTOGRAPHS AND SPACE FLIER QUOTATIONS

As its first project since the founding Congress in 1985, the Association of Space Explorers has begun production of an elegant and inspirational book of dramatic photographs of the Earth from US and Soviet space missions. The photographs will be accompanied by quotations of astronauts and cosmonauts that reflect their deepest feelings about and reactions to viewing the Earth from the distant perspective of space. As conceived, the book will serve as a medium through which the ASE will accomplish its goal of sharing with the world the transformative space experiences of both member and non-member fliers. The project is being undertaken in association with Kevin Kelley, editor and project coordinator. With carefully selected and thoughtfully juxtaposed photographs of the planet and quotations from space fliers, this book will powerfully underscore the singular, whole, and delicate nature of our planet and the life upon it. In addition, the book will provide an opportunity for internationally renowned individuals (American astronauts, Soviet cosmonauts, and space travellers from other countries) to collaborate and cooperate on a project with global appeal, and in so doing, demonstrate their commonly shared affection for the Earth. The project will serve as a model for cooperation and goodwill and dramatize a common concern in a fragmented world.

Primarily photographic in nature, the book will contain approximately 150 of the most striking photographs taken of the Earth from space. They will emphasize the Earth, rather than people or space hardware. The photographs, to be selected for their beauty and emotional impact, will capture the Earth in her many moods. They will awaken and rekindle our feelings of wonder and reverence, and at the same time inspire a sense of caring for the Earth, so essential in these times. It is hoped that these compelling images will catalyze in the viewer something akin to the experiences that have deeply affected many space explorers. The text will consist of quotations by both ASE members and other space explorers. The ASE Editorial Committee has invited astronauts and cosmonauts from all over the world to submit quotations for consideration of inclusion in the book: their remarks will reflect their reactions, feelings, musings, inspirations and transformations related to the experience of traveling around and viewing the Earth from space. The statements will compliment and enhance the pictoral theme of the book, and where possible, have a direct relationship to the visual images accompanying them.

Each quotation will be printed in the native language of the astronaut or cosmonaut to be followed by repeats of the quotation in English and Russian, where neither of those is the language of origin. Thus English and Russian will appear on all pages, joined periodically by a third language. In addition to adding an attractive design element to the work, this multilingual treatment will reflect and honor the wide national diversity of astronauts and cosmonauts while enhancing the book's global quality and appeal. Such an approach will further allow for a single publication capable of being read by and Americans.

The book will include a foreword by Jacques Yves Cousteau, who was presented with the ASE's First Annual Award for his lifelong dedication to "The Home Planet", the theme of the organization's 1st Planetary Congress. In his address to the Congress, Cousteau eloquently drew the connection between the experience of our space pioneers and humankind's ability to contemplate its place in the cosmos. In addition to the above described Russian/English based edition, foreign language editions of the book are planned in Japanese, French, German, Italian, Arabic, and Spanish. All editions will be printed and released simultaneously throughout the world. EDUCATIONAL SLIDE SHOW

Perhaps the single most important audience toward whom the ASE has chosen to target its message is school children. The excitement of the human exploration of space affects more and more young people throughout the world as space education becomes a greater priority in the classroom. Students are naturally attracted to the human daring and bravery, to the technological achievements, and to information about new, mysterious environments that space flights elicit. One of the beneficial results of humans entering space which is equally, if not more important, to share with young people is the perspective that space travel offers of the Earth itself, as well as of life upon it. To this end, the ASE is currently completing preparation of a 20 minute slide show describing the transformation experienced by Russell Schweickart of his relationship to the earth based on his experience of flying around it m space. Conceived and created by Dr. Ronald Billingsly of the University of Colorado and intended primarily for use in junior high and high school classrooms, this slide show provides an engaging vision of the wholeness and unity of our planet. The aim of the presentation is to offer students at this level a dynamic and positive impression of both the diversity and interdependence of all life.

The slide show, entitled "Around the Home Planet", consists of 80 slides (one carousel) and is accompanied by a taped narrative and musical sound track. The narrative is a condensed version of Schweickart's "No Frames, No Boundries" presented at the Lindisfarne Association. In his presentation Schweickart takes his audience with him on three complete orbits of the Earth, the first detailing the business at hand, the second, his growing bonding with the Earth, and the third, the philosophical transformation in his relationship to his fellow humans. Original work by Brian Eno, a leading composer of "new" music, complements the narrative by providing a rich, soothing and mystical acoustical background.

As part of the slide show package, leaders of the Teacher in Space Education Foundation have agreed to prepare an accompanying teacher's guide offering suggestions to instructors as to how best to incorporate the material into their overall program. ASE and TIS Foundation leaders have established a close and cooperative working relationship, and this slide show is among the first projects to benefit.

SPACE EXPLORER ESSAY VOLUME

As part of its effort to educate and stimulate people interested in space and in the future, the ASE has begun the production of an anthology of essays by both member and non-member space fliers. Apart from periodical pieces in the printed, and occasionally electronic media, there are few avenues available to interested readers that provide an in-depth glimpse of the experience, recounted by the astronauts and cosmonauts themselves, of space flight. To date there have been no compilations of articles by space fliers, particularly of an international scope, published in one volume. The new book, which currently has a working title of "My Impressions of Space Flight", will be a collection of short essays by astronauts and cosmonauts. It will offer an unparalleled opportunity for space fliers to relate their most meaningful space experiences and to share them with an interested reading audience. The following questions will serve as a point of departure for the astronauts and cosmonauts as they write their pieces:

Where, when, and how did you decide to become a space explorer?

What is the most memorable event in your space career?

Where will manned space flight be, and where will you be, in twenty five years? -

A black and white portrait of each flier, as well as a color photo of the contributor choosing taken in space and accompanied by personal commentary,^will complete each essay. In keeping with the spirit of the Association of Space Explorers, the book aims to give broad public exposure to the belief of ASE members that space exploration should proceed for the benefit of all people on Earth. The book will be published simultaneously in English and Russian, with additional versions to be published in the languages of the countries of contributing space fliers. At its 2nd Congress, the ASE assigned Soviet Cosmonaut the task of managing this project. Makarov has enlisted the commitment of the Soviet publishing house "" to produce the Russian language edition, and as the project progresses, international publishers will be approached. There have been very few joint US/Soviet publications to date. It is hoped that once an example has been set by participating astronauts and cosmonauts that other groups will feel emboldened to take similar initiatives in their respective fields.

ASTRONAUT/COSMONAUT JOINT SPEAKING TOURS

As an integral part of the its public education program, the ASE is currently undertaking an international speaking tour by several of its members. It was decided at the 2nd Congress that two initial tours, one in the and one in the United States, would be organized for 1987. The first tour took place in six cities in the United States in April, 1987, with five different U.S. astronauts participating. The themes of the initial tours relate to the theme of the 1987 Congress, "The Next Generation in Space". As articulated at the 2nd Congress by the working group assigned to determine the theme for the 87 Congress, some of the questions to be addressed on this topic are:

What quality of space do we pass down to our next generation? What are the goals of the next stage of manned space flight?

How do we prepare our children, the next generation, for space flights?

The astronaut /cosmonaut speaking tours will give ASE members an opportunity to share their ideas on these questions directly with a wide audience. Local and national media coverage of these events will expand the audience and, it is hoped, stimulate a broader discussion of the topics addressed. The live format of the tour will enable the audience to provide direct feedback to the explorers about their feelings on the subjects. It is likely that many of these interests and concerns will be noted and taken to the Congress to be addressed by the membership. To the extent that astronauts and cosmonauts are seen as role models throughout the world, the speaking tours will serve as useful and inspiring examples to those seeking and practicing international cooperation and and will provide a crucial perspective to international understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing us as we enter space. National heroes working together in friendship will be in a unique position to inspire a new consciousness, particularly in young people, of man's relationship to the planet and what options we have for the future. HOW PROJECTS GENERATE REVENUE The ASE plans to generate revenue from all four of these projects. With the book of photographs, ASE will take 30% of a 10% royalty (shared with Kevin Kelley and the Institute of Noetic Sciences) based on the invoiced list price on sales numbering up to 10,000 of hardcover editions sold in the U.S• > 12% from 10,001 to 15,000, and 15% on sales above 15,000. On softcover editions, the ASE takes 30% of 7.5% for up to 25,000 copies sold, and 8.5% thereafter. The ASE also retains subsidiary rights for all spin- off products from the book. The slide show will be marketed to schools and teachers throughout the country, and later throughout North America. ASE-USA is currently in search of marketers with competence in the educational audio-visual field. In discussions with marketers, ASE-USA estimates that the shows will sell for approximately $30. each, with an expected net revenue to ASE of $15. per show sold. A publisher for the space flier essay volume has not been selected, but Addison Wesley has expressed interest in the work. Though sales are not estimated to be as high as with the photograph book, it is expected that once produced and distibuted, the ASE stands to gain substantial revenue above costs. The joint speaking tours have proven financially successful, with the first U.S. tour netting the ASE-USA $14,500. This is an attractive opportunity for the ASE to make use of its unique membership to generate cash in an ongoing manner for its activities.

First I want to acknowledge Ted's persistence here in keeping our eyes on this ball.

Still, I feel that the step should not be underestimated as to its potential impact on our organization * ••• and therefore it should not be taken either lightly or hastily. NOR « * I am not suggesting that it is about to be. Let me elaborate. The perception of our organization is clearly important ... goes without saying. What creates and influences that perception, however, is not so obvious and we need to discuss it in some depth. One of the factors for consideration is .. just what do people "see" of us, i.e. the ASE? One of the most obvious and pervasive is our stationery, of all things! In fact very few people happen to see us during the recent lecture tour.«. a few more read some brief squib in the papers about it. But what they will look at, and actually examine, is a letter they get from us... WHEN it has a list of "advisors" or "contributors" or anything like that. This upcoming list will be scrutinized for everything from gender balance to political leaning to economic status to character and/or name recognition. We cannot ignore any of these... or the others like race which I happened to leave out of the above list.

One of the biggest concerns I have (I want to know yours.•. please) is that we have a disproportionate share of "friends" on the left side of the political spectrum. Ted's suggestion of Alan Kay (great guy) just put an exclamation mark on this concern for me. I believe we need to make a concerted effort to obtain substantial political balance.« • or ironically, we WILL be accused of being political! In somewhat the same way, if slightly less critical is gender. It's easy to name many potential male candidates for this list ... try putting together a significant list of comparable females (don't tell me that there isn't a comparable universe to select from.«. I know that.. and it doesn't cut it).

Anyway •. I support this effort, and will do my share of pondering and searching ••. but I do not feel we should undervalue the impact it will have on the perception of (and therefore the audience... and participation in) the ASE. I think we should all trade off in our minds the disadvantage of going out with letterhead WITHOUT a list of advisors (or perhaps substituting a list of members,., or board members) compared with the advantage of having a letterhead WITH a list. If we shut more doors than we open it will have been (in retrospect) a strategic blunder. Rusty

Andrei: 10:13:43 5/8/ 1987

Per advise of Alexei Leonov I am asking you to arrange a tour of Star City for Mr. Henry Dakin. I sent the message below to Leonov and Makarov six days ago regarding a visit to by Mr. Henry Dakin. I ’m sure you have met Henry over the years. He has supported the Esalen work (Hickman, Murphy, et al) and the ASE for years, and has not only contributed financially but is our landlord as well providing space in his buildings for Esalen, Joel Schatz and the ASE-USA. Henry is visiting Moscow for the first time. He is a space fan and would love to visit Star City. He is a very timid man and would not ask for this himself, but it would be a very special favor for a very special person. Ted Everts, our administrative director, followed up my message to Alexei with a phone call yesterday and Alexei advised him that there would have to be a request of some kind from Kokoshin. I am asking you to please make this request. Henry will be at the Rossiya beginning on May 13, Thanks for your help Andrei. Rusty

>

Alexei and Oleg: 10:23:27 5/2/ 1987

This message is to advise you that Henry Dakin will be visiting Moscow between 13 and 24 May. I would like to make a special request that a tour through Star City be arranged for Henry. Just as a reminder, both of you met Henry Dakin during the Executive Committee meeting in San Francisco in January 1986. Henry is the owner of the building in which we held the meeting, and he is also the owner of the building in which the ASE-USA office is located. Henry has also been one of our best financial supporters from the very beginning. Henry (and one or perhaps two others) will be staying at the Rossiya Hotel and he will call you (one of you) on 14 May to see if it is possible to tour Star City. The best day for him to do the tour would be 15 May, but I'm sure his schedule could be adjusted if that date is not suitable. As a general rule I do not want to make requests of this kind. I know what a burden it can be from my own experience. However, this is an exceptional case since Henry has done so much to make our organization possible and he would never make such a request on his own behalf. This would be a special gift to a generous and very shy man.

Please respond as soon as possible so that we can advise Henry prior to his arrival in Moscow.

Thanks very much,

Rusty

Byron: 11:36:49 5/8/ 1987 Hi. I just got back from a lecture in Maine and found myself in a double Oooopps!. As I passed through Boston on the way to Waterville I ran into George Poravas, one of my old buddies in the 101st. Despite the obvious aging on both sides we recognized each other. After figuring out who was still in the outfit from the old days, I mentioned that I would be coming up for the celebration at Westfield. He said something like ...oh yeah, second week of June, isn't it? My skin crawled a bit.

When I got home last night I found a message from Bill Sheehan asking for a publicity photo... and my skin crawled again.

I just called the ANG at Westfield and asked about the date.« . sure enough 13, 14 June the same weekend my daughter graduates from U.C. Santa Cruz!! OH NO. But yes. Nothing I can do but apologize... I obviously have to go there. I thought back and realized how it happened, not that that's any comfort, I hadn't even thought about her graduating this year at all when I agreed to accept your invitation there. When she called and asked about setting me up in a hotel for her graduation.. I naturally didn't question at all that I would go. And my big sin was in not immediately checking our calendars. As luck would have it I put the ANG date on Nancy's calendar and ever since we've been concurring that the weekend of June 13, 14 is obligated.. BUT WITH TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do? I've tried to think about a way to handle both but there really isn't one .. . in fact I'll be in California the whole week before. I feel like a shit.

Dear Mr. Kartsev,

The Association of Space Explorers book project would like to host a meeting and reception at the ASE-USA office for your group visiting San Francisco this month. I have sent this invitation via telex to Mir offices, and at the suggestion of Kevin Kelley, our book editor, am following it up in writing. We would like to meet with you on Thursday, May 21 at 1900 to spend an hour or so to discuss the project, and then break for refreshments. Attending the meeting on the US side will be Kevin Kelley, ASE astronaut Loren Acton and his wife Evelyn, Bill Patrick of Addison Wesley, Alan Kelly, our public relations consultant, Carol Denison, the book designer, myself, and possibly Brad Bunnin, Mr, Kelley ’s legal consultant. Please respond via telex to 4900001650(ASE) as soon as you can confirm this meeting. We will be able to change the time to fit your schedule and would like to know in advance if this is necessary. Mr. Kelley has further requested that if possible, you bring copies of Cosmonaut Leonov's books "Man and Universe", "Solar Wind", and "Emerging into Open Space". Thank you. I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Ted Everts Administrative Director

Very sorry that your performance review became delayed, It was because of the comm problems with Rusty due to his itinerant situation just now.

Ev should be able to get the document (I think you will be pleased) to you next week and the salary adjustment (I hope you are pleased) has gone in.

I am also sorry that I have not responded in a thinking way to recent messages but it has not been possible for me to do so. I will take advantage of the weekend off to catch up. Thanks much for your initiative and good work for ASE and the world!

To: ASE Board and Ted. From: Loren Acton Date: 10 May 1987 Subj: ASE-USA advisory board. My instincts say go slow on advisory board for letterhead, Two primary reasons. 1. I think their role should be more than names on our letterhead. Definition of this will take time and personal contact to form the group before board can be properly and formally installed will take time. 2. It took some time before the Cosmos understood and were comfortable with the incorporation of ASE-USA. Kevin Kelley felt this was a significant issue at the Paris meetilng with Makarov and has raised his concern that to take this step without prior explanation/discussion would not be wise * I agree on this *

I suggest two steps that might help the funding letter issue for the near term—and perhaps in the long term: 1 * Play to our strength, put the list of members on the letterhead in small type with ExComm first, ASEUSA board second and rest of membership following * List flights following each name. 2. Enclose in letter a brief note of endorsement signed by a small subset of the persons judged most effective as money drawers.

Ted, These suggestions are not rigid opinions but I feel that we have assets and needs which are to some degree unique as compared to most other non-profits outfits. Without sitting down with knowledgeable people like Ed and Rusty I feel unable to suggest or comment on the list of names except to say that the list would probably vary with purpose and audience and maybe through the use of the endorsement notes we could take advantage of that fact. Ted, Your fund raising letters are superb! I am glad to help out as I can but need some sensitivity training before I can ask for contributions effectively. Plus my very limited time must be direted for most effect. Idea. I am told that I am an effective and inspiring speaker. I will be pleased to give talks about space or whatever for anybody or any group that makes contributions of over, say, $1000 to ASE. I would be willing to contact likely prospects with this offer or you may do so on my behalf. Schedule will be always a problem but we will work it on a case by case basis. I can provide references.

From: L. Acton Date: 10 May 1987 Subj: Logo/ poster/ picture book. Logo —In general I like the artistic qualities of Alexie's helmet logo. It will not lend ittself to a bold patch but so be it. Let's start using it but try to think of something to put into the blank space next to the helmet.

Poster— by all means add the other languages, It will add to the artistic and symbolic value of the poster. Book— I am not comfortable with choice of publication date but so be it. If we have a Leonov painting I hope that we can have a Bean also—a nice symmetry with respect to the founding congress. Issue of sale of Leonov prints in the West could be a sensitive one and cause misunderstanding. I at least do not understand it. However, I am inclined to be supportive if the ultimate result accrues to the benefit of ASE. Am not interested in using ASE auspices to subsidize Mir.

Hi. I finally got at the review. I really didn't have much to add at all. I only decided to make a bit more specific the interest I have in getting into the product mode for income. I really think that if we can do that, especially in terms of schools, that we serve both income and outreach functions. I also think that, in the long run, it provides greater stability of income as well as requiring less "tending".

OK. « • ready for delivery. Rusty

PERFORMANCE REVIEW

Employer: Association of Space Explorers-USA Employee: Ted Everts, Administrative Director Date of Hire: April 28, 1986 Today Date: May 10, 1987

We, the officers, of ASE-USA, continue to be appreciative of you, your work and your attitude. In particular, we want to call out some fine work—during this review period. 1) Lecture tour — taking initiative of getting it in place and preparing for it, working cooperatively with Alan Kelly on PR for it, as well as accompanying the cosmonaut on the tour,

2) Fundraising iniative - obtaining a grant from the Sunflower Foundation; attending the Fundraising School and beginning to implement your learning,

3) Executive Committee - going to Innsbruck as our support staff person and the follow-up, 4) 2nd Congress Report - generating it and following through to the end product.

For the next six-month period, we see the following as goals:

1) Continue to develop a fundraising base for ASE-USA

a) Establish ASE-USA product distribution mechanism b) Implement grant and individual revenue programs,

2) Prepare for and coordinate the 3rd Congress efforts,

3 ) Enlist volunteers as needed for help with office work—this may include database management, work on special projects, etc. This will bring new supporters into our circle and help out the budget.

Other comments:

goals We feel you met the mentioned in your 10 / 28/86 review, i.e > 1) taking a lead role in day-to-day, month-to-month planning of ASE-USA; and 2) gaining expertise in and developing plans for fundraising. We encourage you to be sensitive and aware of the risks of ASE-USA ’s aligning and identifying too closely with 11the peace movement.” We need to do all we can to avoid political and governmental entanglements. Thank you; we * re well pleased. Disposition:
