Without his full-hearted support and his enduring commitment my research would not have materialised. I am further deeply indebted to Dr. Michael Willis who dedicated his precious time to discuss with me issues pertaining to my research. Special thanks also goes to Dr. Philip Robins, Senior Tutor at St. Antony’s College, for having supported my field work in Germany in the summer vacation of 2006 with a grant from the Carr and Stahl Funds, and to the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Committee and Near and Middle Eastern Studies Committee for having awarded me two research grants to finance my field work in Israel in the winter of 2006. Without listing everyone personally, I would like to thank all my interview partners as well as colleagues and friends who shared with me their thoughts on the nature of the Israeli-German relationship. Having said all this, it is only due to my mother and my boyfriend Joe who have supported me throughout six not always easy years that I have been able to study at Oxford.

By reading contemporary literature in connection with philosophical, psychological, and theoretical works, new problem areas of the liberal promise of recognition become visible. Tied to assumptions of cultural essentialism, language use, and prejudice, one of the main findings of this work is how the recognition process is closely tied to narrative. Particularly within developmental psychology it is often argued that we learn and come to terms with ourselves through narrative.

2020 Media Analysis of the US Election: August 2020 Insights from pressrelations 2020 Introduction In cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics FKIE and NewsGuard, pressrelations is conducting am in-depth media analysis that sheds light on the role of disinformation in the 2020 US election. Time window of the qualitative analysis Link to the InfoBoard The basis for this quantitative, fully automated media analysis is formed by 426 online media sources from five countries. The data from 16 of those media sources was coded by pressrelations analysts, according to qualitative criteria. The selected media sources included eight US media sources and eight online media sources from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH), which were analyzed for the period from August 1 to August 31, 2020. In addition, TV coverage of CNN, FOX News and ARD was examined. 9/24/2020 PAGE 2 2020 Methodology This analysis includes the assessment and mapping of the media landscape from different perspectives and is based on extensive data collection from media reports made public on the Internet or on TV channels. The amount of news about the 2020 US election campaign is immense. The volume of articles therefore made it necessary to restrict the media set to a few select media sources. The selection of media was based on the potential reach and the volume of contributions of the respective sources. Despite this restriction, a total of 13,203 posts were coded in August alone. All articles that addressed at least one of the four candidates running for the American presidency and vice presidency were examined.

BRAND NEW, Inside the Head of Bruno Schulz, Maxim Biller, Bruno Schulz, Dan Hillier, Anthea Bell, Do you see what kind of a madhouse this town of Drohobycz is now, Dr Mann? People here never think and act as they should! Locked away in a dimly lit cellar in a provincial Polish town, the writer Bruno Schulz is composing a letter to Thomas Mann, warning him of a sinister impostor who has deceived the gullible inhabitants of Drohobycz. In return, he's hoping that the great writer might help him to escape - from his apocalyptic visions, his bird-brained students, the imminent Nazi invasion, and a sadistic sports mistress called Helena. In Inside the Head of Bruno Schulz, Biller blends biographical fact with surreal fiction to recreate the world as seen through the eyes of one of the most original writers of the twentieth century.

  • Publishing Against the Grain
Sixth NLPVF International Non-Fiction Conference, 2006 Publishing Against the Grain Friday morning: Commercial pressure: anathema to good publishing or essential to it? Maarten Valken – Welcome to the Rode Hoed, as this building is called, the red hat. It started out as a hatter’s shop. In the seventeenth century it became a Remonstrant church, although services were officially forbidden at that time, so it became a clandestine church. It remained a Remonstrant church until 1957, the oldest and biggest one in The Netherlands, and since 1990 it has become a debating centre. This conference is already the sixth one since we started nine years ago. We were and still are able to organise them thanks to the financial help of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These conferences have become a unique place to meet, to have longer contacts, especially for publishers who have less and less time to talk to each other personally, but also between publishers and translators, and of course for the Dutch authors to get in touch with both of them. The last conferences we started to send around a survey. It was first meant as a source of ideas, but it also turned out to be a very interesting document for the discussions, and we will probably use them later. In the other room as you might have seen there are Dutch books by the authors who are here: Minka Nijhuis who is sitting here, Marjon van Royen, and Jutta Chorus who is joining us later, she will talk tomorrow.

  • Russian Women Writers 1 Migration to Germany
HANNES KRAUSS* Universität Duisburg-Essen German Novels – Russian Women Writers 1 Migration to Germany – this theme dominates political debate today, and not just in Germany. I’d like to look back on an earlier and smaller wave of migration to Germany. Between 1991 and 2004 some two hundred and twenty thousand Jewish immigrants settled in Germany from the succession states of the Soviet Union. As so-called ‘quota refugees’ these people did not need to make a formal application for asylum, but were allowed – on the basis of a decision of the interior ministers (home secretaries) of the German Länder – to settle at once. Almost none of these migrants spoke German, and yet in the meantime an unusually high number of them have gained a place within German literature. Vladimir Kaminer – author of Russian Disco – is probably the best known, but today I would like to concentrate on some of the women writers, who, though less prominent in the literary scene, actually write better books. Another migrant – Maxim Biller, born 1960 in Prague and settled in Germany in 1970, a well-known journalist and somewhat less successful novelist – recently published in Die Zeit a strong attack on immigrant writers: „Seit der Vertreibung der Juden aus der deutschen Literatur durch die Nationalsozialisten waren die deutschen Schriftsteller, Kritiker und Verleger jahrzehntelang fast nur noch unter sich. […] Die Abwesenheit der jüdischen Ruhestörer tut unserer Literatur nicht gut, sie wird immer selbstbezogener, dadurch kraftloser und provinzieller.“ And the immigrant writers merely, in Biller’s words, „[passen] sich sehr früh […] der herrschenden Ästhetik und Themenwahl an“; their lives as migrants are * Open Access Copyright License: cb Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.
