Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 5 A T RADITIONAL SEASIDE RESORT MABLETHORPE Situated on the “drier side the country”, Mablethorpe flourished as a traditional seaside resort following the establishment of the ‘Louth and East Coast’ railway line. This vital transport system, opened in 1877, brought an influx of visitors and investors to the resort from the and North West of the country. The Parish is noted in the Doomsday Book with the production of salt being the prime industry for the northern area of Mablethorpe. Throughout the centuries the area has endured several periods of unrest, including the loss of a third of the population to the Black Death in 1349, and severe coastal and property damage in the floods of 1953. Population figures range from a mere 40 adults in 1115; rising to 157 in 1603 and an estimated 261 in 1841, compared with approximately 10,000 today. The Town was granted Market Rights by King Henry III in 1253; the charter gave the lord of the manor, David de Monte Alto, sole rights to hold a weekly market in the Town. The Town Council took over the operation and management of the weekly market service from the District Council in 2012 and this popular year-round attraction boasts over 35 stalls selling a wide variety of products and is well worth a visit. The market promotes the national ‘Real Deal’ charter, giving shoppers peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that no counterfeit or illegal goods are offered for sale by any trader. Despite the closure of the railway in 1970, visitors and tourists continue to flock to this popular seaside resort, boosting the population for Mablethorpe from its static of around 9,800 (2011 census) to around 21,000 per week during the peak holiday season. Mablethorpe continues to maintain its superb reputation as a family resort, with the seafront having been designed with families and children in mind and boasting a blue flag award winning beach, traditional donkey rides and its popular funfair. For the grown-ups there are colourful gardens to visit in nearby Queen’s Park, with its bowling greens and boating lake, and, of course, there is an abundance of pubs, clubs and restaurants to cater for every need and budget. For the sporting visitor there are a number of clubs in the area, from tennis to football and badminton, with the Sports Centre, located on the High Street, catering for a variety of sports, along with horse riding stables and fishing lakes nearby. Moving away from the beach into the centre of town, shoppers and bargain hunters can browse the numerous shops offering plenty of souvenirs. The Seal Sanctuary at the North End of Mablethorpe gives an insight into the life of the mammals of the sea, with birds and many other animals, including the recent addition of a meerkat enclosure. Evening and night time entertainment abound, from the local cinema to the bustling night clubs and entertainment venues to the many pubs in town offering live music and bands. July sees the annual “Summer Illuminations” event, with traditional seaside entertainment, daytime street market, and concluding with an impressive fireworks display. During the off-peak weekends of the autumn and winter months, the exhilarating sport of motorcycle sand racing takes place, along with the annual Christmas market and Winter Illuminations. All in all, there is something for everyone, summer and winter, resident and visitor, making Mablethorpe the place to be.

6 Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 SUTTON ON SEA Previously known as Sutton in the Marsh, Sutton on Sea offers a more tranquil environment to the bustling atmosphere of Mablethorpe. With an estimated population of 100 in 1287, the area provided predominantly farming and fishing. Before the branch line connected Sutton to the main railway, it had its own steam tram running to Alford, which ran from a terminus (now the Bacchus Hotel). Talk of a harbour at that time brought much excitement and the Sea View Freehold Land Society was formed to develop the area, resulting in the Park Road and Grove Road development. Today the area retains its peacefulness without amusement arcades or funfairs, with a friendly and informal welcome extended to visitors ensuring that this pretty village wins the hearts of visitors, year after year. This gives the town’s 4,900 (2011 census) residents and visitors time to savour the quiet sandy beaches, discover traditional shops and the opportunity to visit the tranquil pleasure gardens. The sporting contingency is still catered for with the football pitch, tennis court and fitness equipment, along with the cricket and bowling green and the ever popular paddling pool. Nature lovers can visit the Town Council’s Acre Gap Conservation Area or walk along Branch Line Walk inland to the small village of Hannah. The village is a hive of activity and boasts the annual Carnival in July, full of colour, sound, laughter and traditional family fun. In December the annual traditional Christmas market and carol service brings the whole community together and ensures Sutton on Sea retains its own individual identity.

TRUSTHORPE Nestling between Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea is Trusthorpe, the ‘traditional’ village element of the parish. Crop fields and grazing livestock keep the agricultural spirit alive whilst maintaining the distinctiveness of the area with a resident population of 2,080 (2011 census). Trusthorpe Village Hall is actively used by local groups in the area and an annual pantomime has been staged here for 72 consecutive years. Dwellings nestle amongst caravan sites to the east and fields and countryside to the west, giving this area too its own distinct character. The population was around 286 in 1842, with most residents employed in agriculture and fishing; however, tales of smuggling and ship-wrecks among its ghosts make for an interesting history! Time was when, at very low tide, an old forest could be seen off Trusthorpe beach, a relic from the global warming of the day when the sea claimed the land!

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 7 THE MERIDALE CENTRE Established in 1965 as a Youth Club by a group of local teenagers, the Meridale Youth & Community Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 and has gone on to become a very important organisation in the area, with recognition from wide ranging groups, societies and Town, District and County Councils. In 2004 the Centre was honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to the community, being the only recipient in the county and one of only 104 in the whole of the UK. As in the early days, young people, with the advice and support of a Management Committee, look after the day-to-day management of the centre. The Centre Manager, John Monk MBE, has been directly responsible for its growth and continuance over the years. And, in 2019, in recognition and gratitude for over 50 years’ service to the youth and community of the Parish, John was awarded the honour of Freedom of the Parish by the Town Council. The Meridale is ideally placed in the centre of Sutton on Sea and offers first class facilities, with disabled access throughout; a variety of meeting rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, internet access and more, to accommodate just about every conceivable need. The Centre produces a Community Newsletter, delivered free of charge by volunteers to dwellings in Sandilands, , Sutton on Sea and Mablethorpe. A derelict area next to the hall was purchased and transformed into a much loved community garden. Just steps away from the main road, the garden offers a place of peace and tranquillity for local residents and summer visitors. With some assistance from the Town Council, the town war memorial was enhanced with beautifully decorated wrought iron railings to protect and preserve the wreaths and dedications placed there. And, to commemorate the 100 years’ end of WW1, the Centre organised an exhibition which attracted in excess of 2,000 visitors over three days, and featured information boards on each of the soldiers whose names appear on the war memorial. Always planning for the future and the important role the Centre plays in the community, two major projects are underway; firstly, the provision of an in-house Health and Well-being worker and, secondly, enhancement of youth provision in the area. With an excellent, professional, board of Trustees and an amazing leadership team, the Meridale can continue to be “PROUD OF OUR PAST AND FOCUSSED ON OUR FUTURE”.

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 9 MABLETHORPE IN BLOOM Mablethorpe boasts a blue flag award winning beach, with sand dune areas planted with native flora. All around the town each year volunteers are kept busy, planting, trimming, watering and growing in order to ensure the area looks its best throughout the holiday and visitor season and beyond. An example of community engagement at its best; encouraging people to take pride in their town, their area and assisting the community to come together with the overall aim of inclusion and civic pride. The Mablethorpe ‘In Bloom’ group consists of volunteers from all walks of life and ages and they receive assistance from the Town and District Councils. The area is entered into regional and national ‘In Bloom’ competitions and has won numerous awards, most recent of which being Silver Gilt in 2018. In 2017 the group featured in a pilot programme on BBC2 called ‘Britain in Bloom’ and this was aired in April 2018; another successful endeavour to put Mablethorpe back on the map and increase tourism to the area.

SUTTON ON SEA GARDENING GROUP Sutton on Sea is a charming and attractive village which in 2018 was successful in achieving a Silver Gilt and Best Coastal Town award in the East Midlands and RHS In Bloom competition. This was accomplished by the hard work of the Sutton on Sea Gardening Group volunteers with the support of residents and businesses. Established in 2011 the gardening group has been putting colour in to Sutton, and now, with the assistance of the Town and District Councils, maintains many of the central areas of the village and High Street. 2018 saw the introduction of the “Incredible Edible” project in an area near the War Memorial. Fruit and vegetables were grown for everyone to pick and enjoy. Going forward the group plan to expand this project and others which celebrate the heritage of Sutton on Sea.

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 11 ACRE GAP Acre Gap lies between Church Lane and Sea Lane, Sandilands, and is the area where the sea undermined and breached the sea defences in 1953; it can be found by walking south along the promenade from Church Lane pullover where stunning views of the site can be seen from this vantage point. You are invited to walk amongst the grass and wildflower meadows; a number of footpaths cross the Acre Gap site, making it a favourite dog walking place and giving walkers the opportunity to discover new plants and identify the wildlife. In 2004 Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Council acquired the land to establish a wildlife and conservation area. A group of volunteers from the local Women’s Institute joined a working group of the Town Council and trees and shrubs were planted with the help of friends and members of the Meridale Scout group. Yellow rattle to inhibit strong grasses has recently been introduced and an attempt has been made to introduce marsh orchids that grow on other marshy areas along the coast. There are a number of species of butterflies seen here in the season and bats have been recorded. Migrant birds including reed & sedge warblers and whitethroat use the area along with resident birds including reed bunting. An active working group of the Town Council and local enthusiasts still works to manage and constantly improve the area. The creation of this large wetland conservation site has helped to promote the conservation of wildlife. QUEEN ’S PARK Located behind the promenade, Queen’s Park offers many facilities for the visitor and residents to enjoy. The car park provides a central parking location with easy access to Mablethorpe town centre, promenade and beach. The park has a boating lake and formal lawned areas and gardens. Visitors can play bowls on the outstanding bowling green, try their luck at Crazy Golf, venture out into the lake on a pleasure boat, watch the geese and ducks, or simply relax by the lake whilst sampling the fare from the cafe. The Park is signposted from the promenade and makes an ideal change of scenery from the sea and beach.

SUTTON PLEASURE GARDENS Situated adjacent to the pullover and The Meridale Centre, Sutton Pleasure Gardens offers play areas and tranquil seating areas for children and adults alike; with a safe and pleasant paddling pool where children can play under the watchful eye of parents sitting around the pool. The colonnade is at present under review due to serious structural problems having been identified in 2018 and a process of consultation and visualisation to regenerate the whole colonnade area for the future is currently underway.

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 13 MABLETHORPE LIFEBOAT STATION A lifeboat station was established in Mablethorpe in 1883, replacing an outdated station at the nearby village of Theddlethorpe. The station was publicly inaugurated on the 4th June 1883, and a crowd of around 10,000 attended the opening ceremony. However the location presented access and launching issues for the crew and a replacement station, now known as “The Boatshed” was built in 1900 on Victoria Road. The town’s first lifeboat, ‘the Heywood’ (Lifeboat no. 275) was built in 1882 and commissioned in 1883. During her years of service she was launched on 24 occasions and saved 13 lives. It took 12 horses to launch the lifeboat and the 10 man crew would be able to achieve approximately 3½horse power in heavy seas. During the Great War, the lifeboat station was temporarily closed as the crew members were away fighting for King and Country. The station never fully re-opened and the last lifeboat, the ‘John Rowson Linguard’ was withdrawn in 1920. In 1965, a lifeboat station was re-established as an inshore station and the coastline rescue was serviced by a D class lifeboat. The existing foreshore station was built in 2001 and houses an Atlantic 75 and a D class inshore lifeboat. For more information about the station why not visit the station to view the boat and browse the well-stocked gift shop or view the website at www.mablethorpe.info/lifeboat

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 21 CHURCHES ST. MARY’S (MABLETHORPE) The present church is thought to date from c1300 as the original was thought to have been washed away in a great storm surge of 1287. Legend has it that the bells will be heard to ring when another flood is imminent. During bell ringing practice in the 1950’s, parts of the floor began to collapse; following subsequent excavations a slabbed grave was discovered, thought to be that of George de Mablethorpe. The bell tower contains 6 bells that in earlier times were ‘tolled’ to mark the passing of a parishioner, twelve times for a man, nine times for a woman and three times for a child. In 1978, due to subsidence, the original mediaeval arches were replaced; however some of the original stone bases remain. In the Sanctuary is a tomb of an unknown ‘Earl Fitzwilliam’, legend has it that he fought a duel in the 14th century, in which both parties died. He was buried here and his metal helmet can still be viewed today. Likewise there is a monument in the church at Maltby to an Earl which further supports the legend. The church seats around 200 people and Sunday Service is held at 11.00 a.m. and Thursdays at 9.30 a.m. ST. PETER’S (TRUSTHORPE) TThe original church at Trusthorpe is said to have been situated a quarter of a mile east of where it stands now, destroyed by the encroaching sea. The mediaeval font and pillars inside the Church were saved and now stand proud inside the Victorian renovated Nave (1842) and Chancel (built 1931). The Church is constructed of locally sourced red brick and in the wall of the porch is an inverted stone, carved with a shield, cross and gothic inscription. This impressive little Church boasts beautiful stained-glass windows and its Tower dates to 1606. It has 3 Taylor-cast bells and villagers, who renovated its Balcony and Tower in 2015, started a bell-ringing group, ‘The Trusthorpe Clangers’ who ring for Sunday morning services, practice nights and for all national bell ringing days. On Remembrance Sunday they were chosen to ring alongside Lincoln Cathedral on BBC Radio. Sunday Church service starts at 9.00 a.m. and Tuesday ‘Book of Common Prayer’ Service starts at 9.30 a.m. The Church has many Open Days throughout the year. ST. CLEMENT’S (SUTTON-ON-SEA) Many years ago, a large part of the parish, including the church, was out at sea. St Clements was re-built in 1819 and again in 1860 when the chancel was enlarged and the transept added to improve the seating capacity. Although the church is now a fairly modern structure, it is noted for its “leaning tower” containing four bells, with the oldest dating from the 15th century. The church seats up to 200 people. The regular Sunday Service is held at 10.00 a.m. and a mid-week service is held on Wednesdays 9.30 a.m.

Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Guide 2019 –2020 23 OTHER AREAS TO VISIT St Mary’s Conservation Area – This tranquil green-space is situated to the west of the centre of Mablethorpe, developed following the closure of a former landfill site, consisting of wild grass areas, trees and shrubs, walkways and a natural pond. The area also forms part of the cycleway through and around the town. This area achieved ‘Fields in Trust’ status in 2014. Trusthorpe Triangle – Trusthorpe residents completed this Community Garden Project in 2011. The garden is now maintained and administered by the ‘Trusthorpe Clangers’ (a bell ringing group who also maintain St. Peter’s Church Tower, Community Annexe and Paddock). The team has received three Silver Gilt awards for their hard work. The small bridge, until the autumn of 2018, had a rare sluice gate which was the only one left in Lincolnshire. It was taken out (for safety reasons) and is now placed in St. Peter’s Paddock for historic purposes. The land also houses an historic bus shelter, constructed in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Harris Boulevard Community Garden – This small piece of land is located off Seacroft Road, Mablethorpe, and was established in 2011 by the local youth forum in partnership with the Town Council. This project is a fantastic example of how community engagement engagement can make a positive difference and the garden boasts many ‘In Bloom’ Awards. Railway Walk and Turntable Area – Situated between Mablethorpe High Street (off Station Road) and the Mablethorpe Industrial Estate, Railway Walk is a pleasant green walk following the line of the old railway. Located on the site of the former Railway Turntable, the area has been turned into a small conservation area, with a monument to its former use in the form of a carved engine, interspersed with wildlife feeding areas and associated planting. Branch Line Walk – This pleasant area follows the line of the old railway from Crabtree Lane, Sutton on Sea to the nearby village of Hannah. The footpath created along the walk is an excellent use of the former railway line and promotes the conservation of wildlife, plants, birds and insects. The trees, grasses and plants provide shelter to a variety of birds, insects, and small creatures, enhancing the experience for walkers in the area. Diana Memorial Garden – This small garden was established in 2010 as a memorial tribute area to Diana, Princess of Wales; situated off Trusthorpe Road, the garden gives a pleasant roadside resting place to sit and relax and is popular with cyclists and is well maintained by the Sutton on Sea Gardening Group. Cycleway – Beginning in St Mary’s Conservation Area, the cycleway leads eastwards through to Stanley Avenue, along Mablethorpe High Street to Queen’s Park, up onto the pullover and through to Huttoft Car Terrace. (Please Note – care is needed through the sand areas, and right of way must be given to pedestrians on the promenade). Skatepark and Exercise Equipment The Skatepark was constructed in early 2008 by East Lindsey District Council and updated in 2016 following fundraising activities by local resident Mrs Margaret Codling. This well-used amenity continues to be a hit with the younger population and visitors alike, with superb tricks and stunts regularly demonstrated. The area also has two pieces of “adult gym” equipment, the Rodeo Board and the Twin Fly which are popular with both the young and not so young! In 2013, a memorial stone was installed in this area to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the floods, in dedication to those affected by the tragic events on 31st January 1953.
