Groehn One lovely Wednesday afternoon, in the 1870's, two little girls sat on the McVittie front steps on the south side of Canfield Avenue West, between Second Boulevard and Third Avenue. They were watching the carriagos and horses as they clip-clopped to a stop in front of the Watton carriage stone next door. The ladies in elegant afternoon attire were "com!"" to call" on Mrs. Walter I"atton, the wife of a prominent Detroit denti"t.. Wednesday was the day Mrs. Watton IIreceived," and this was duly noted in a Detroit society blue book, which was a handy reference book for the lIin societyll ladies. Once again, almost one hundred years later, the atmosphere of ele gantly built homes with beautiful, landscaped lawns and quiet living can become a reality on tilis block. The residents who are now rehe.bilitating these homes are recognizing the advantage of historic tOlm house lh-;.ng, wi th its proximity to the center of business, cultural, and educati'm"~_ facilities. Our enthusiasm has blossomed into a plan called the CanfIeid West-Wayne Project, because we desire to share with others our discovery of its unique historical phenomenon. -

Skiing – Alpine and Nordic Dale Murrish with some info from Dave Norkus & Darryl Ahlberg GM Ski Club Troy, Michigan 17 January 2013 Skiing – Alpine and Nordic • Commonly called downhill and cross-country • Two different sports – both outdoors in the snow – Snow: hate it or play in it? • Equipment for each type • Basic techniques • Local, Michigan and faraway destinations • GM Ski Club trips - www.gmskiclub.org, meets in Troy – Originally GM employees but open to everyone • Other GM Ski Club activities - see their website 17 Jan 2013 2 Alpine Skiing Equipment • Skis, boots, bindings, poles – Rent them at the resort or nearby shop before buying them – last year’s rental models may be a bargain • Warm coat, hat, mittens or gloves, helmet? • Dress in layers – several layers are better than a heavy coat. • Wear synthetics next to the skin to wick moisture to wool sweaters (insulates when wet). August 2020 The Washington Greater Seattle Chapter SDC Founded in 1969 Volume 50 Number 8 Not much to report this month either. Can- celled seems to be the slogan these days The editor is continuing on his 51 project, but going slow. Got the trunk lid straightened out and painted. I had a lot more small dents and imperfections than I realized. It is on the car but still having a hinge problem. It seems that is common with worn hinges. For now I put it aside to work on another day. Most of my time has been taken up with things around the house. Like fence repair to keep deer and rab- bits out of the garden. We really prefer to eat the vegetables ourselves. And then there was pressure washing and painting decks and patios. Not any of my fun projects. The painting was hired out to Greta, and she did a good job on the deck. 4 Gallons worth.
