It has been left untouched by archaeologists except for the clearing of a path for visitors and structural strengthening to stave of further deterioration. Bayon Temple: The Bayon Temple, also known as the 'Temple of Beaming Faces‘ is a mountain temple built to represent Mount Meru, the centre of the universe in both Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. A huge face and other carved head images are visible at the top of the south gate tower of the beautiful Bayon Temple. Banteay Kdei Banteay Kdei is a mysterious temple. There is no record of why it was built—or by whom—because no marker stone with that information has ever been found. The sprawling, largely unrestored, monastic complex is built in the same style as Ta Prohm. Phnom Kulen National Park Kulen is considered by Khmers to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia and it is a popular place for domestic visitors during weekends and festivals. On the hilltop there are 56 Angkorian temples made of bricks and volcanic stones, but most of them are badly in poor condition. Price indicator: Ticket for the Angkor complex is USD 40,- p.P. for 3 days or USD 60,- for 7 days Transport: most temples within Angkor Wat complex are free with your Navutu Dreams Tuk Tuk driver. Course content may vary from semester to semester. www.fieldstudies.org © 2019 The School for Field Studies Fa19 COURSE CONTENT SUBJECT TO CHANGE Please note that this is a copy of a recent syllabus. A final syllabus will be provided to students on the first day of academic programming. SFS programs are different from other travel or study abroad programs. Each iteration of a program is unique and often cannot be implemented exactly as planned for a variety of reasons. There are factors which, although monitored closely, are beyond our control. For example: • Changes in access to or expiration or change in terms of permits to the highly regulated and sensitive environments in which we work; • Changes in social/political conditions or tenuous weather situations/natural disasters may require changes to sites or plans, often with little notice; • Some aspects of programs depend on the current faculty team as well as the goodwill and generosity of individuals, communities, and institutions which lend support. Please be advised that these or other variables may require changes before or during the program. Part of the SFS experience is adapting to changing conditions and overcoming the obstacles that may be present. In other words, the elephants are not always where we want them to be, so be flexible! A STUDY OF THE NAMES OF MONUMENTS IN ANGKOR (Cambodia) NHIM Sotheavin Sophia Asia Center for Research and Human Development, Sophia University Introduction This article aims at clarifying the concept of Khmer culture by specifically explaining the meanings of the names of the monuments in Angkor, names that have existed within the Khmer cultural community.1 Many works on Angkor history have been researched in different fields, such as the evolution of arts and architecture, through a systematic analysis of monuments and archaeological excavation analysis, and the most crucial are based on Cambodian epigraphy. My work however is meant to shed light on Angkor cultural history by studying the names of the monuments, and I intend to do so by searching for the original names that are found in ancient and middle period inscriptions, as well as those appearing in the oral tradition. This study also seeks to undertake a thorough verification of the condition and shape of the monuments, as well as the mode of affixation of names for them by the local inhabitants. I also wish to focus on certain crucial errors, as well as the insufficiency of earlier studies on the subject. To begin with, the books written in foreign languages often have mistakes in the vocabulary involved in the etymology of Khmer temples. Some researchers are not very familiar with the Khmer language, and besides, they might not have visited the site very often, or possibly also they did not pay too much attention to the oral tradition related to these ruins, a tradition that might be known to the village elders.

A legend concerning Jayavarman II Michael Vickery First presented at EFEO Paris in September 2004, since revised; subject to further revision In his publication of one of the inscriptions which will be studied here, we find one of the late and unwisely neglected opinions of Coedès, written long after his histories had been set in stone, as it were.1 "For Angkorean epigraphy ... [the reigns] of Jayavarman II and his son ... make up a semi-legendary period, to which the great religious families attached the origins of their religious functions and the land owners the origins of their rights to property" This was in reference to inscription K956, not published until 1964, and which no doubt surprised Cœdès with its claim to a ceremony, different from that of Sdok Kak Thom, to protect Cambodia from Java. Although having recognized the possibility of folk legend creeping into the story of Jayavarman II, Cœdès obviously did not want to relegate that entire scenario to legend, and concluded that there must really have been two such events, perhaps even more, and that the ceremony mentioned in K956 would have preceded that described in the Sdok Kak Thom inscription. This last detail must have been because K956 is in the South, and Cœdès was assuming that Jayavarman would have reached that area earlier on his return from Java. This is not the only example of a radical change in Cœdès‘ opinions. Throughout his Inscriptions du Cambodge, there is new information which forces modifications of subjects treated in his États hindouisés, first written under a different title in 1944, and with only very minor changes in detail thereafter (in 1948, 1964, 1968 (English).
