Here, you will find everything from elegant stone and wood statues to household furniture. Next, continue on to visit War Memorial Monument which is dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives in the civil war; and followed by a visit to the beautifully decorated shrine of Preah Ang Chek and Preah Ang Chorm which is located just across from the Independence Gardens and The Royal Palace. These sister deities, believed to have been Angkorian Princesses, were originally housed at the Preah Poan gallery at Angkor Wat but were repeatedly moved to keep their whereabouts secret from invaders as well as treasure hunters until they were finally enshrined in their current location in 1990. After dinner, enjoy a little shopping at the night market or head over to Pub Street which is packed with restaurants and bars for a taste of nightlife in Siem Reap. Day 02 SIEM REAP (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to The South Gate of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Explore the temples inside the walls of the “Great City” such as Bayon, Phimeanakas, Baphoun, Terrace of the Elephants as well as the Terrace of the Leper King; followed by a small circuit tour of Thommanon, Chau Say Tevoda, Ta Keo and Ta Prohm, a temple with jungle-like atmosphere with a combination of giant trees and extensive roots growing out of the ruins. After lunch, explore the grounds of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the “Seven Wonders of the World”. Constructed during the first half of the 12th century and encompassing an area of about 400 acres, this awe-inspiring temple is the largest and the best-preserved monument within the ancient city that was the epicentre of the Khmer empire that once ruled most of Southeast Asia. Later in the evening, take a short hike up to the top of Bakheng Hill for a fabulous view of sunset over Angkor Wat and its surrounding rice fields as well as forested countryside; before relaxing and unwinding while enjoying a dinner with Khmer Traditional Show. Day 03 SIEM REAP (Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner) After breakfast, journey approximately 40 kilometres Northeast of Siem Reap to Phnom Kulen National Park. Literally the “Mountain of Lychees”, it is believed to be the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire and is considered to be the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Wind through some spectacular tropical jungle scenery to emerge on the plateau; visit the remains of the three-tiered pyramid temple Prasat Rong Chen that marks the site where the Khmer Empire was founded in AD 802; and thereafter, continue on to the famous “River of a Thousand Lingas”. Believed to date back to the 11th century, the riverbed has been elaborately etched with several hundreds of Lingas as well as Yonis while depictions of Hindu deities dotted the area along the river. Take a dip and cool off at one of the waterfalls nearby, enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to the city for a little shopping at a local market. Evening is free at leisure for you to explore the city. Day 04 SIEM REAP / _______ (Breakfast) After breakfast, free at leisure until it is time for your transfer back to the airport for your onwards journey. 4 Days / 3 Nights Package Extension Night Hotel & (per person per package, in MYR) (per room per night, in MYR) Room category Adult Child Single Twin/Triple With bed No bed Single / Twin Triple Holy Angkor Hotel (3-star) * Standard Room (GV-2) 1550 1290 1110 870 * Standard Room (GV-3) 1430 1170 1010 790 250 320 * Standard Room (GV-5) 1280 1020 880 700 * Standard Room (GV-8) 1200 940 810 640 ** Peak Season (29 Dec ’19 – 03 Jan ’20 & 25 Jan ’20 – 01 Feb ’20) surcharges @ MYR$50.00 per room per night Sokharoth Hotel (4-star) * Deluxe City View (GV-2) 1670 1350 1160 910 * Deluxe City View (GV-3) 1560 1240 1070 840 290 390 * Deluxe City View (GV-5) 1410 1090 940 740 * Deluxe City View (GV-8) 1320 1000 870 680 ** Peak Season (21 Jan ’20 – 31 Jan ’20) surcharge @ MYR$50.00 per room per night ** Compulsory New Year Eve (31 Dec ’19) Dinner @ MYR$260.00 per person Remarks ** Additional night includes accommodation & breakfast only Festive Season Surcharges ** Chinese New Year (23 Jan ’20 – 28 Jan ’20) surcharges @ MYR$50.00 per person per package 4 Days / 3 Nights Package Extension Night Hotel & (per person per package, in MYR) (per room per night, in MYR) Room category Adult Child Single Twin/Triple With bed No bed Single / Twin Triple Steung Siem Reap Hotel (4-star) * Superior Room (GV-2) 1740 1390 1190 930 * Superior Room (GV-3) 1620 1270 1090 860 330 410 * Superior Room (GV-5) 1470 1120 960 760 * Superior Room (GV-8) 1390 1030 890 700 ** Peak Season (28 Dec ’19 – 02 Jan ’20 & 24 Jan ’20 – 31 Jan ’20) surcharges @ MYR$50.00 per room per night Angkor Miracle Resort & Spa (5-star) * Deluxe Room (GV-2) 2130 1580 1360 1060 * Deluxe Room (GV-3) 2010 1460 1250 980 410 560 * Deluxe Room (GV-5) 1860 1310 1130 880 * Deluxe Room (GV-8) 1780 1230 1060 830 ** Peak Season (28 Dec ’19 – 04 Jan ’20 & 25 Jan ’20 – 27 Jan ’20) surcharge @ MYR$130.00 per room per night ** Compulsory New Year Eve (31 Dec ’19) Dinner @ MYR$390.00 per person Remarks ** Additional night includes accommodation & breakfast only Festive Season Surcharges ** Chinese New Year (23 Jan ’20 – 28 Jan ’20) surcharges @ MYR$50.00 per person per package Terms & Conditions * Travel period : 15 December 2019 – 31 March 2020 * Travel must be completed by 31 March 2020 * The above rates require a minimum of 02 adults per booking, up to a maximum of 09 adults and/or child * The above rates are applicable to Malaysian passport holders only * Rates for other nationalities are strictly on request basis and may be subjected to additional charges * The above package is subjected to compulsory tipping of MYR$40.00 per person * Mandarin-speaking guide is strictly on request basis and will be subjected to additional charges of MYR$160.00 per group per day * Mandarin-speaking guide is not available during Chinese New Year (21 Jan ’20 – 03 Feb ’20) * The above rates and tour program are subjected to change without prior notice * Payment via credit card is subjected to additional bank charges (3% for Visa Credit Card or MasterCard & 4% for American Express) * The above package DOES NOT include any visa arrangement. Ecosystems and Livelihoods SFS 3810 Syllabus The School for Field Studies (SFS) Siem Reap, Cambodia This syllabus may develop or change over time based on local conditions, learning opportunities, and faculty expertise. Course content may vary from semester to semester. www.fieldstudies.org © 2019 The School for Field Studies Fa19 COURSE CONTENT SUBJECT TO CHANGE Please note that this is a copy of a recent syllabus. A final syllabus will be provided to students on the first day of academic programming. SFS programs are different from other travel or study abroad programs. Each iteration of a program is unique and often cannot be implemented exactly as planned for a variety of reasons. There are factors which, although monitored closely, are beyond our control. For example: • Changes in access to or expiration or change in terms of permits to the highly regulated and sensitive environments in which we work; • Changes in social/political conditions or tenuous weather situations/natural disasters may require changes to sites or plans, often with little notice; • Some aspects of programs depend on the current faculty team as well as the goodwill and generosity of individuals, communities, and institutions which lend support. Please be advised that these or other variables may require changes before or during the program. Part of the SFS experience is adapting to changing conditions and overcoming the obstacles that may be present. In other words, the elephants are not always where we want them to be, so be flexible! Course Overview The mighty Mekong (derived from Mae Kongkea, meaning ‘big water’), one of Southeast Asia’s most productive and influential rivers, originates high in the Tibetan plateau and weaves south through China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, finally reaching its terminus in the delta of Vietnam.

  • Destination: Angkor Archaeological Park the Complete Temple Guide
Destination: Angkor Archaeological Park The Complete Temple Guide 1 The Temples of Angkor Ak Yom The earliest elements of this small brick and sandstone temple date from the pre-Angkorian 8th century. Scholars believe that the inscriptions indicate that the temple is dedicated to the Hindu 'god of the depths'. This is the earliest known example of the architectural design of the 'temple-mountain', which was to become the primary design for many of the Angkorian period temples including Angkor Wat. The temple is in a very poor condition. Angkor Thom Angkor Thom ("Great City") was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. The walled and moated royal city covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north. Angkor Thom was established as the capital of Jayavarman VII's empire, and was the centre of his massive building programme. One inscription found in the city refers to Jayavarman as the groom and the city as his bride. Angkor Thom is accessible through 5 gates, one for each cardinal point, and the victory gate leading to the Royal Palace area. Angkor Wat Angkor Wat ("City of Temples"), the largest religious monument in the world, is a masterpiece of ancient architecture. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and eventual mausoleum.
