Dicotyledon plant is 80.9%, monocotyledon plant is 9.8%, Pteridophyta is 8.1%, Gymnosermae is 1.2% among the whole plant family. Rare and endangered plants are Crypsinus hastatus, Lilium distichum, Viola albida, Rhododendron micranthum, totalling four species. Endemic plants are Carex okamotoi, Salix koriyanagi for. koriyanagi, Clematis trichotoma, Thalictrum actaefolium var. brevistylum, Galium trachyspermum, Asperula lasiantha, Weigela subsessilis, Adenophora verticillata var. hirsuta, Aster koraiensis, Cirsium chanroenicum and Saussurea seoulensis total 11 taxa. Specialized plants are 20 classification for I class, 7 classifications for the II class, 7 classifications for the III class, 2 classification for the IV class, and 1 classification for the V class, total 84 taxa. Naturalized plants specified in this study are 10 types but Naturalization rate is not high compared to the area of BaekDu-DaeGan. This survey area is focused on the center of BaekDu- DaeGan, and it has been affected by excessive investigations and this area has been preserved as Buddhist temples' woods. -

JARQ 31, 35-40 (1997) Disappearance of Nezasa Dwarf Bamboo (Pleioblastus variegatus Makino) after Flowering in Grazing Grassland of Aso Nobuaki KOYAMA and Yasuo OGAWA* Department of Grasslands, Kyushu National Agricultural Experiment Station (Nishigoshi, Kumamoto, 861-11 Japan) Abstract Nezasa bamboo (Pleioblastus variegatus Makino) is an important native plant for grazing of beef cows in the grasslands of Aso area. In 1992 nezasa bamboo flowered over 2,150 ha of grassland in the northern somma of Aso volcano. The current studies were carried out to investigate the effects of flowering on yearly changes in the above- and underground parts of nezasa bamboo. In the flowering year (1992) the amount of aboveground parts (44.0 g DM m-2 in June 1992) decreased to 19% of the value recorded (227.1 g DM m-2 in June 1991) in the previous year (1991). In the year after flowering (1993), the aboveground parts were scarce (only 1.3 g DM m-2 in June 1993). Dry matter weight of underground plant parts in the year of flowering decreased from spring to autumn, and the plants died after the summer. In the next year of flowering the dry matter weight continued to decrease. In 1994, the recovery of nezasa bamboo in grasslands of the northern somma of Mt. Aso was investigated. The rate of recovery was low and it was considered that 10 or more years would be required for the recovery of nezasa bamboo. In modern molecular systematics, matrices of unordered multistate characters, r P such as DNA sequence alignments, are used for analysis with no further re-coding e r procedures nor any a priori determination of character polarity. Here we present 1001, a P simple freely available Python-based tool that helps re-code matrices of non-additive characters as different types of binary matrices. Despite to the historical basis, our analytical approach to DNA and protein data has never been properly investigated since the beginning of the molecular age. The polarized matrices produced by 1001 can be used as the proper inputs for Cladistic analysis, as well as used as inputs for future three-taxon permutations. The 1001 binary representations of molecular data (not necessary polarized) may also be used as inputs for different parametric software. Presently the number of taxa is regarded to be more. In the present paper a list of bamboos occurring in Bangladesh with their vernacular names and distribution in Bangladesh has been given. Few taxonomic problems regarding Bambusa tulda-longispiculata-nutans-teres complex and "bethua"-"parua" problems have been discussed. A brief note on the ecology regarding the occurrence of bamboos in Bangladesh has been included. Introduction Bamboos are plants of enormous importance to the rural people in several regions of the world, but their usefulness is great in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, bamboos are used for house construction, scaffolding, ladders, mats, baskets, fencing, tool-handles, pipes, toys, fishing rods, fishing traps, handicrafts, etc., and for several other articles of everyday use. In some parts of the country, the bamboo leaves are used as thatching materials and it is a good fodder. For tropical countries, bamboo is one of the important raw materials for paper industries. Bamboos are planted for hedges and landscaping. Bamboo groves also act as a wind break and prevent soil erosion. The young tender shoots of bamboos are eaten as delicious vegetables. These young shoots, locally known as "banskorol" are much eaten by the tribal people of Bangladesh during the rainy season. Considering the wide range of uses as construction material, it is called the "poor man's timber." Bangladesh lies on both sides of the Tropic of Cancer and the 90° East Meridian. -

Lectotypification of Bambusa pygmaea Miq. and Bambusa disticha Mitford (Poaceae- Bambusoideae) C. M. A. Stapleton1 1 The Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3AB, UK. Abstract. Original and current applications of the names Bambusa pygmaea Miq. and Bambusa disticha Mitford are considered. Similarities between these bamboos and dwarf clones of Bambusa multiplex (Loureiro) J. A. & J. H. Schult. are discussed, possible synonymy is considered, and B. pygmaea and B. disticha are neotypified. Of all the bamboos, none have presented more problems to the taxonomist than the dwarf species from Japan, especially those with variegated cultivars. Descriptions were brief, typification is generally lacking, specimens are scarce or fragmentary, and lists of later synonymy of names and combinations at different ranks and in different genera seem almost endless. Species concepts remain narrow, even after considerable lumping, and the characters that separate species are minor, variable, and frequently overlap. Nevertheless, these bamboos have remained popular in horticultural use around the world. The smallest, unvariegated cultivars are often simply known in horticulture as ‘little green runners’, or are given the names Pleioblastus pygmaeus or Arundinaria pygmaea without further study. Although the species under consideration here are sometimes placed in Arundinaria or Sasa, in Japan they are placed in Pleioblastus Nakai sect. Nezasa Koidzumi. They can be distinguished from Arundinaria Michx. by the closure of culm buds and the occurrence of multiple, level branch primordia when growing vigorously, and from Sasa by having only 3 stamens and leaf margins that do not wither in winter. They are separated from other sections of Pleioblastus by their broader leaves, and leaf sheaths with horizontal shoulders and short ligules (Suzuki 1978).
