Join us on Friday 19 March at 7pm GMT as we stream The Dream (2017). Frederick Ashton’s delightful interpretation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a classic of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and this production, recorded in 2017, features music from Felix Mendelssohn performed by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and designs from David Walker. Showcasing the extraordinary talents of dancers of The Royal Ballet, this recording stars Principal dancers Akane Takada as Titania and Steven McRae as Oberon. Also featured are First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti as Puck and Principal Character Artist Bennet Gartside as Bottom. Newsletter, December 2012 Svenska Konsertbyrån Fredrik Zetterström is the recipient of Operapriset 2012 We are proud to announce that baritone Fredrik Zetterström is the recipient of Operapriset 2012 (The Opera Prize), which is handed out by Swedish music magazine Tidskriften Opera. Fredrik Zetterström received it for his interpretation of Wozzek at NorrlandsOperan in Umeå last season. When you were singing Wozzek, did you get a good feeling about your performance? "Yes, I did. The director and conductor were very good up there. There was a good atmosphere in many ways in Umeå." Now you're playing the role of Anckarström (Renato) in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, which is based on the murder of king Gustav III of Sweden at the Royal Swedish Opera. How does it feel to play the murderer at the same place as the actual event? "It is something that strikes you from time to time, especially in the last scene you think 'this is exactly where it happened'. It's indeed inspiring." You've played a lot of roles during your career. Do you have an absolute favorite? "I do. It's WOZZECK, but not because of the Opera prize. It's hard to say why. Sometimes the music just speaks to you, and your voice just fits the notes in some way. I try not to over-analyze, I just like the role." In 2013 Fredrik Zetterström will do the title role in the Scandinavian premiere of Aribert Reimann's expressionist opera Lear, which will be playing at Malmö Opera 27 April-29 May. -

As a ‘court’ city Munich had a marvellous musical tradition, particularly noted for its operatic performances. Indeed, music lovers owe King Ludwig II of Bavaria thanks for supporting the ‘impossible’ Richard Wagner at a vital point in his life. This level of state support continues today and Munich’s Opera House is one of Europe’s most important, a vibrant artistic and music milieu, and our formal visits will be enlivened by three wonderful operas, including Parsifal, at the Bavarian State Opera. In the early eighteenth century, Bavaria, in common with all the other German Electorates and Principalities, embraced the late Baroque of Italy, imported from Rome and Turin. By about 1725, French influence began to lighten this style with a particularly delicious variety of the Rococo, represented by the extraordinary Asam brothers' church of St John Nepomuk. Under the Elector-Duke, Maximillian III Joseph (1745 - 1777), Munich consolidated this ‘Golden’ rococo age, perhaps best typified by the exquisite Residenz Theatre by François de Cuvilliés and the delicate interiors of both Schleissheim and Nymphenburg just outside the city.
