We publish our 800th edition today On the 5th July back in 2005, the Lakes Weekly Bulletin hit the streets for the very fi rst time. That edition was just 4 pages. This week we celebrate our 800th edition. Not bad going especially considering the last twelve months, in fact our 750th edition was a digital copy during 2020 lockdown and very low key indeed. Time has fl own since those early days and we have continually evolved to remain relevant to Queenstown. The Lakes Weekly started in recognition of the fact that for local business, trying to get the message out and attract customers and staff at a reasonable price was a serious problem. We did not really have a plan on how we were going to change the status quo. All we knew was we wanted to create a place to buy and sell stuff, advertise to potential customers, and fi nd staff. So, with the classic kiwi can do attitude, we decided to just give it a go and dive in blind. None of us at the time had experience in media so we did things differently. Our unique distribution into the hands of every business in the district, this The current team that brings you the LWB Scott Stevens, Ferg Spary, Ana Salvi, editorial on the front page not buried within. Some things worked and some Cat Mercer, Kendale McLeod, Kylee Evans David Gibbs (absent Andy Brinsley and did not but with a bit of luck and some good judgement we have had more Renato Baldichia) wins than losses and the Lakes Weekly continues to grow despite the world- wide dominance of American behemoths Facebook and Google. We have adapted and remain focused on the hyper local. We get fantastic feedback from you, our readers, which helps drive our decision making. The strength of the Lakes Weekly is the strength of our team. Past and pres- ent, they have been incredible, making it happen. There is a lot that goes into producing the edition every week; from the regular contact with clients, engaging our wonderful regular contributors, the graphics team who design ads, lay out the publication for proofi ng, making last minute changes before it goes to print in Alexandra. The window to turn around each issue is tight and ODT Print who have done the printing job for us every week for 12 years now have not missed a beat. Thanks team! One of the exciting things has been seeing The Lakes Weekly develop into WINNER OF The Queenstown Media Group and experiencing the growth of our JobFix brand and the Queenstown App which has given us both satisfaction and Outstanding Bar of the Year 2021 confi dence that we are indeed, delivering for our local community. That’s you, our readers and fellow local businesspeople. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved up to this point, and this sense of pride is highlight- ed more than ever when we see people walking down the street clutching their copy, fl icking the pages, engrossed. Keep reading, enjoy and thanks for supporting local media. Scott Stevens, Ferg Spary and Andy Brinsley

The improved trail is expected to attract an additional 65,100 users by 2033. It’s seen as both a recreational trail and also an environmentally- friendly, active way to commute around Queenstown. Stage 1 & 2 are 30km of trail extensions connecting to Arrowtown and Tuckers Beach to Arthur’s Point. It includes a new FIND NEW pedestrian bridge at Tucker Beach. Stage 3 will connect Jacks Point, and Gibbston Valley, with a new pedestrian bridge at Boyd Road. The project will be supplemented by $4.49 million funding from Waka Kotahi, the New Zealand Transport Agency, as part of the Wakatipu Active Transport programme. The remaining 50% is being sourced locally via local funding bodies, QLDC, philanthropists and Friends of the Trust. LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 5

I went to the hearing on the Spatial Plan as I was so outraged that QLDC are planning for a doubling of tourist numbers and residents by 2050. Do please let me know if that is what you want, because I haven’t met any locals who want it going back to preCovid numbers let alone doubling.

I was speaking on behalf of 23 people who all think we should ban any more hotels being built in downtown Queenstown and try to persuade the existing ones to convert to apartments. High density housing in town would defi nitely make public transport work better (all very well saying everyone should walk and cycle round the basin, but riding from Ladies Mile to downtown on a rainy or snowy day just isn’t anyone’s idea of fun) and bring some life back to the town centre. And why not put tolls on all the bridges, especially at peak hour - that might get people more interested in carpooling. We don’t have any carshare clubs here and we should. Just putting more and more housing by the most troublesome roads is simply moronic. And selling the camping ground to make MORE hotels and MORE shops isn’t what any of us have asked for….especially now that we’ll be paying $8 million for the asbestos cleanup.

Enough from Mrs Whinge… hope you all enjoyed the last of the golden weather - rain really is forecast now! And a huge happy birthday to Jeff Williams who’s just turned 7. Oops…70. He’s older than some of his classic cars now, and looking very well maintained. LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 7 COMMUNITY NOTES

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN Page 8 Don’t spend it all at once - council’s $20m plea by Paul Taylor Queenstown Lakes economic diversity champions are calling on the Government to spread the love with its $20 million fund. Tourism Minister Stuart Nash announced last Thursday that there is $20 million earmarked to help the district diversify its economy. It’s part of a $200 million package to help tourism communities recovery from Covid-19 and create a more sustainable tourism sector. The $20 million will be used to underwrite private projects and Nash highlighted two potential projects, a digital innovation hub and a film studio. That’s likely to be the proposed Silverlight Studio on 322ha of land near , which has Government approval to apply for fast-tracked consent under Covid-19 legislation. But Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) economic development manager Peter Harris says: “Research shows that relying on one project to diversify an economy comes at a high risk, and that government investment would have the most positive effect by being spread over a number of themes.” QLDC’s Economic Development Unit (EDU) has developed its own framework detailing what it believes is the best way for the district’s economy to diversify. The EDU presented the draft framework to officials from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, as well as the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment MBIE, in Queenstown on Tuesday. The $20m fund is likely to be administered by MBIE. The draft framework, released to the public on Friday, will eventually form part of a district-wide diversification A graphic from QLDC’s draft diversification framework plan. It is designed to align current and future projects driven by local business leaders and entrepreneurs, and shows how start-ups, existing businesses, larger industries and corporations can form an eco-system. “The diversification framework includes supporting existing initiatives and attracting new entrepreneurs and businesses to move to the district,” Harris says. “The most proven pathway is to build upon what you have.
