We invest in technology companies that benefit from shifts in cultural trends and behaviors in an increasingly diverse global marketplace. Periodically, we compile a list of cultural/ behavioral trends that we believe are influencing global popular culture, termed “Culture Shifts: The State of Technology and Culture”. These shifts represent areas that we believe hold great opportunities for growth, innovation, and of course, investments in the coming year. In this installment of our State of Culture series, we look at how the gaming industry is changing the world and where we see opportunities for growth, innovation, and investment in the years ahead. 3 GAMES AND CULTURE Imagine we are back in 1988 in the middle of another US presidential election. Michael Dukakis is running against George H. W. Bush. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) premiered to great success three years prior, launching Super Mario Brothers and Zelda into the public consciousness. To reach younger voters Michael and his running mate Lloyd Bentsen decide to put up digital campaign yard signs next to each castle in Super Mario Brothers and outside each dungeon in the Legend of Zelda. Of course, even if it was technically possible to do that (it wasn’t), the world would have looked at the candidates as certifiably crazy had they done it. Flash forward 32 Nintendo years, and the current Democratic candidate for president, Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris recently announced Source: that they are doing just that—putting up virtual campaign signs inside of Nintendo’s social simulation game Animal Crossing—and the collective thought is, what a great idea. What started in the early 1970s as a way to bounce an electronic ball between two paddles on your home television screen has morphed into a massive industry that is influencing and shaping culture and business on a global scale. The $160 billion video game industry is the melding of physical and digital worlds that is literally pulling everything from education, music, movies, TV, sports, medicine, national defense, construction and politics into the future. In fact, while the video games themselves remain a central part of the industry, the reverberation these games have on the world produces an outsized impact far greater than revenue alone. • Sociality and Materiality in World of Warcraft Nicholas Anthony Gadsby
Sociality and Materiality in World of Warcraft Nicholas Anthony Gadsby University College London Department of Anthropology A thesis re-submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2016 1 Declaration I, Nicholas Anthony Gadsby, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I conform this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract The focus of my thesis is the role and status of control in the MMO World of Warcraft where one of the primary motivations for player engagement was to eliminate and marginalise contingency at sites across the game that were perceived to be prone to the negative effects of contingency, a process that its developers were to a significant degree complicit in. My field sites traced the activities and lives of gamers across the physical location of London and the south east of the United Kingdom and their online game locations that constituted World of Warcraft and occasionally other online games which included the guild they were a member of that was called ‘Helkpo’. It examines how the transparency attributed to the game’s code, its ‘architectural rules’, framed the unpredictability of players as problematic and how codified ‘social rules’ attempted to correct this shortcoming. In my thesis I dive into the lives of the members of Helkpo as both guild members and as part of the expansive network that constituted their social lives in London. It demonstrates how the indeterminate nature of information in the relations in their social network contrasted with the modes of accountability that World of Warcraft offered, defined by different forms of information termed ‘knowing’ and ‘knowledge’.

However, there remains little in the way of a unanimous definition of what it means to be creative – with various conceptualisations illuminating different aspects of this multifaceted phenomenon. However, it is for the most part agreed that creativity contributes to a wealth of positive outcomes such as openness to experience, cognitive flexibility and emotional wellbeing. Furthermore, creativity is instrumental in facilitating a meaningful learning experience as learners can actively formulate and experiment with ideas in an authentic context. In this way, the creative process leads to ultimately the creative expression itself and subsequent positive effects such as learning.

  • Beyond the Author: Collaborative Authorship in Video Games
Beyond the Author: Collaborative Authorship in Video Games Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in English Studies in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Kim Lemon The Ohio State University April 2018 Project Advisor: Professor Robert Hughes, Department of English Lemon 1 Introduction: In recent years, video games have become part of mainstream American society – references to games appear in conversation almost as frequently (and in some cases more frequently) as references to movies, the rise of smartphones and mobile gaming allows many to game on the go, and the stigma around playing video games has largely disappeared. However, despite such developments, video games are rarely taken as objects of critical and academic analysis. Though a critical theory and study of the video game medium has slowly begun to make its way into some academic and analytical circles under the name of ‘Game Studies,’ and though researchers and critical thinkers in this field apply the same analytical theories used for literature and film to video games (Cășvean 51), the majority of academics have continued to ignore the medium as a subject for critical analysis in favor of more established media. There are several reasons why this may be the case: a lack of time or interest on the part of critics to devote to the study of a new medium, a (misguided) notion that new methods of analysis must be formed to examine these new objects, or simply the outdated prejudices held by many critics and embodied by film critic Roger Ebert's remark that "video games can never be art.” Whatever the reason, the lack of critical analysis being done on video games is a missed opportunity for critical and academic fields to engage in a new medium demonstrating new and alternative modes of expression.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Article Motivations for the Use of Video Game Streaming Platforms: The Moderating Effect of Sex, Age and Self-Perception of Level as a Player Luis Javier Cabeza-Ramírez * , Sandra M. Sánchez-Cañizares and Fernando J. Fuentes-García Faculty of Law, Business and Economic Sciences, University of Córdoba, Puerta Nueva s/n, 14071 Córdoba, Spain; [email protected] (S.M.S.-C.); [email protected] (F.J.F.-G.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +34-957-212-688 Received: 17 August 2020; Accepted: 22 September 2020; Published: 25 September 2020 Abstract: A particularly striking new phenomenon in recent years is the live streaming of video games through popular platforms, such as Twitch. This study focuses on the motivations and types of use underlying viewer participation in live streaming platforms. Based on the uses and gratifications theory, this paper aims to analyse how three basic motivations are related to the use of video game streaming platforms. Furthermore, it examines the moderating effects that significant variables, such as the audience member’s age, sex or self-perception of level as a player may exert on this relationship. The results reveal that the three types of motivations are positively associated with use of the platform, although notable differences appear, with informational motivations outweighing entertainment and social motivations. At the same time, no moderating effects on the results of the proposed model were found for the heterogeneity stemming from sex and age. Conversely, the influence of informational motivations on the use of these platforms is moderated by the self-perception of level as a player.

However, these resources often lack depth, detail, large sample size, or significant research on the topic. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: to aggregate and optimize the very best methods for live content creators to employ as they begin a streaming career, and how best to implement these methodologies for maximum success in the current streaming market. Through analysis of a set of semi-structured interviews, popular literature, and existing, ancillary research, repeating patterns will be identified to be used as the basis for a structured plan that achieves the stated objectives. Further research will serve to reinforce as well as optimize the common methodologies identified within the interview corpus. 3 2.0 Table of Contents 1.0 Abstract 2 2.0 Table of Contents 3 3.0 Introduction 5 3.1 History of the Medium 5 3.2 Current Platforms 12 3.3 Preliminary Platform Analysis 14 3.4 Conclusion 15 3.5 Thesis Statement 15 3.6 Implications of & Further Research 16 4.0 Literature
