E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Here we report the larval phytophagous habit of Litoleptis for the first time, and describe six new species of Litoleptis in Japan; L. japonica n. sp., L. kiiensis n. sp., L. niyodoensis n. sp., L. himukaensis n. sp., L. izuensis n. sp., and L. asterel- laphile n. sp. All the species described here are thallus-miners of liverworts belonging to Aytoniaceae and Conocephal- aceae (Marchantiopsida: Marchantiophyta). Each fly species mined thalli of only one of the following genera: Conocephalum, Reboulia, and Asterella. The descriptions of the Japanese Litoleptis species here expand the concept of this genus. The female genital morphology of Litoleptis strengthened the current placement of Litoleptis as a member of Spaniinae. Key words: herbivory, Brachycera, Hilarimorpha, bryophytivore, leaf-mining, keys Introduction Diptera accounts for one of the most speciose clades of organisms and displays extremely broad ecological breadth (Grimaldi & Engel 2005; Wiegmann et al. 2011). A major expansion of dipteran families took place in mid- Cretaceous (Yeates 2002), which coincides with the age of angiosperm radiation (Grimaldi 1999). -

HEWITT Tullie House, Castle Street, Carlisle, Cumbria CA3 8TP [email protected] JOHN PARKER 16 Brunswick Road, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7LT 2 Summary This report describes surveys of flies at sandy exposed riverine sediment and forms part of a series of projects based on the flies included in the Biodiversity Action Plan. Eighteen rivers in England, Wales and Scotland were selected for survey on the basis of their supporting populations of the BPS-listed Spiriverpa lunulata , Cliorismia rustica or Rhabdomastix ‘laeta’ , or whose sandy aspect suggested that high potential for these species. Therevids were sought during unstructured searches lasting for about an hour. The assemblage of flies using ERS was sampled using timed sweep-netting at 284 points and suction sampling at 136 of these. Sampling was targeted at ERS rather than other riverine habitats. Species in all well represented families except sphaerocerids were identified. Records of therevids were patchy. New sites were found for Cliorismia on the Wey, Rother and Tay, and a previously known Rother population was found to be thriving. New records for Spiriverpa were from the Lune, Coquet, Till and Breamish. Cliorismia was found new to Scotland at two locations on the Tay and Spiriverpa was found to be widespread and locally numerous on both the Spey and the Tay (including several apparently new populations). -

We have something of an ‘early stages’ theme in this issue: Jane Thomas describes how she has been successfully rearing soldierflies from larvae to adult (pages 2–3); Liam Olds provides a great field observation of a Pygmy Soldierfly laying eggs in tufa habitat (page 4); and some of our notable record highlights on page 6 relate to egg-laying observations as well. We have a new section on the website devoted to early stages and I would love to hear from anyone who has experience of finding and rearing pre-adult soldierflies and allies. In addition there are some species to look out for that have been found on the continent not too far from the UK (page 5), a summary of the 2020 Bee-fly Watch results (page 7) and updates from the recording scheme, including our new series of photographic identification guides (page 8). As always I am very grateful to all who have contributed records, photos and articles. After the challenges of last year I wish everyone well for 2021 and hope to see lots of exciting records and observations. At least, one can guess the probable identity of larvae from the habitat in which they were found. Thus, in calcareous seepages one would expect to find dives, pardalina and pygmaea, along muddy water margins it would be trilineata, and in wet meadows most likely rara. However, Andy Godfrey has been sampling calcareous streams in Lincolnshire and Oxfordshire using the usual river biologist's method of kick-sampling in riffles. Here he has found morrisii. The larvae of this species have been found in a range of habitats such as marshes and stream margins. This is the first record of the larvae being found within the body of the stream. This was not a single chance event because several larvae were found at more than one site. Although the separation of the larvae of morrisii and pardalina is not good using present characters, there is little doubt that morrisii is the species involved. -
