HEWITT Tullie House, Castle Street, Carlisle, Cumbria CA3 8TP [email protected] JOHN PARKER 16 Brunswick Road, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 7LT 2 Summary This report describes surveys of flies at sandy exposed riverine sediment and forms part of a series of projects based on the flies included in the Biodiversity Action Plan. Eighteen rivers in England, Wales and Scotland were selected for survey on the basis of their supporting populations of the BPS-listed Spiriverpa lunulata , Cliorismia rustica or Rhabdomastix ‘laeta’ , or whose sandy aspect suggested that high potential for these species. Therevids were sought during unstructured searches lasting for about an hour. The assemblage of flies using ERS was sampled using timed sweep-netting at 284 points and suction sampling at 136 of these. Sampling was targeted at ERS rather than other riverine habitats. Species in all well represented families except sphaerocerids were identified. Records of therevids were patchy. New sites were found for Cliorismia on the Wey, Rother and Tay, and a previously known Rother population was found to be thriving. New records for Spiriverpa were from the Lune, Coquet, Till and Breamish. Cliorismia was found new to Scotland at two locations on the Tay and Spiriverpa was found to be widespread and locally numerous on both the Spey and the Tay (including several apparently new populations).

  • Sussex Ghyll Invertebrates
A note on the Two -winged Flies (Diptera) associated with ghyll woodlands in Sussex Patrick Roper (Recorder for Sussex Diptera) 25 February 2001 This paper is also available on line at: http://www.prassociates.co.uk/environmental/articles/ghyll.pdf In the early 1960s I lived on a farm in Robertsbridge, East Sussex and spent much time studying its insect fauna, especially the Diptera. One of the more interesting habitats was a small, spring-fed, woodland stream and, as well as catching insects along its length, I ran an emergence trap from time to time close to its source. Since the 1960s I have investigated several similar ghyll streams in the same broad area and have prepared this brief account of my experiences as a contribution to the study of ghyll woodlands currently being undertaken in Sussex with Interreg funding from the European Community.. Small woodland streams with a permanent flow of water present a variety of niches where flies and other invertebrates breed. Many of these species are not associated with other aquatic habitats and they often emerge in some numbers in the colder months of the year providing food for birds, spiders and other creatures that feed on flying insects. In some places flies like Micropsectra fusca and Thaumalea testacea occur. These are more commonly found in the colder moorland streams of northern and western Britain, the inference being that they are relicts in the South East in spring-fed streams in shaded situations. In this context it is worth quoting from Cranston & Stubbs (1978): “The temperature of springs is almost constant at 8ºC winter or summer, and in many invertebrate groups the fauna can be described as glacial relict.

  • TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm Area)
Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm area) Most of the interest in this tetrad is provided by the section of the Folkestone Downs escarpment that runs along the southern edge. Creteway Down attracts good numbers of common migrants in season and scarcer species have included Long-eared Owl, Firecrest, Garden and Grasshopper Warblers, Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, Nightingale and Redstart, whilst it is a regular haunt for Ring Ouzel in autumn. The Downs provide a good vantage point for recording visual migration and more notable species have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Golden Plover, Ruff, Short-eared Owl and Hawfinch. The spring at Holy Well holds breeding Moorhen and wintering Water Rail, and occasionally Woodcock, whilst Firecrest, Nightingale and Black Redstart have also occurred. Looking west over Creteway Down The fields to the north of Crete Road East can produce Wheatear and Whinchat, particularly if left as stubble in autumn, and a Tawny Pipit was seen in September 1993. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls can often be found in late summer/early autumn. The Hope Farm area was one of the last remaining haunts of Turtle Dove and Corn Buntings also formerly bred here. Looking north across the fields to Hope Farm Spotted Flycatcher at Creteway Down Pied Flycatcher at Creteway Down Waxwings have twice been noted in the tetrad – a flock of 12 by Encliffe Farm in January 2011 and a flock of about.20 by Coombe Farm in January 2013. Redstart at Creteway Down Ring Ouzel at Creteway Down Access and Parking There are several lay-bys along Crete Road East which enable access to Creteway Down and also along Crete Road West which enable access to Holy Well.

Thorpe, Electron Microscope Laboratory, Biological Sciences, University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9QG, England. Introduction In their early stages, meniscus midges are truly inhabitants of the water- film, in a variety of habitats from still to flowing water. Larvae dislodged into the water from their usual inverted-U-shaped position in the film drawn up around emergent leaves and stems, carry a bubble of air between their infolded bristle-fringed posterior paddles and soon surface again; they may make S-shaped curves across the surface of the water before taking up position in the meniscus again. The pupa also lies in the water-film drawn up by some emergent substratum, receiving air through two characteristic respiratory trumpets, and remaining motionless unless disturbed. Stillness is in fact a feature of this Family of non-biting midges, and the adults, especially the females, stand for hours in a vertical position, head up, motionless or slowly waving the third pair of long legs. A unique type of semaphore, however, is demonstrated by both males and females of one species of Dixella, by rapid, or sometimes more prolonged, wing flexes in which two, three or more individuals may take part in turn.

All records of this family from the territory of Croatia are summarized, including previously unpublished data. Collections contained six species of Dixa Meigen – D. dilatata Strobl, D. maculata Meigen, D. nebulosa Meigen, D. nubilipennis Curtis, D. puberula Loew, and D. submaculata Edwards, with Dixa dilatata reported from Croatia for the first time. Information relating to the ecoregions in which species were found and specific species traits are provided. Compared to neighbouring countries, the Croatian species assemblage is most similar to the fauna of Italy and least similar to that of Serbia and Montenegro.
