The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Class Freeman Received 27 July 2013 Summary.—We conducted ornithological feld work on Mt. Karimui and in the surrounding lowlands in 2011–12, a site frst surveyed for birds by J. Diamond in 1965. We report range extensions, elevational records and notes on poorly known species observed during our work. We also present a list with elevational distributions for the 271 species recorded in the Karimui region. Finally, we detail possible changes in species abundance and distribution that have occurred between Diamond’s feld work and our own. Most prominently, we suggest that Bicolored Mouse-warbler Crateroscelis nigrorufa might recently have colonised Mt. Karimui’s north-western ridge, a rare example of distributional change in an avian population inhabiting intact tropical forests. The island of New Guinea harbours a diverse, largely endemic avifauna (Beehler et al. 1986). However, ornithological studies are hampered by difculties of access, safety and cost. Consequently, many of its endemic birds remain poorly known, and feld workers continue to describe new taxa (Prat 2000, Beehler et al. 2007), report large range extensions (Freeman et al. 2013) and elucidate natural history (Dumbacher et al. 1992). Of necessity, avifaunal studies are usually based on short-term feld work. As a result, population dynamics are poorly known and limited to comparisons of diferent surveys or diferences noticeable over short timescales (Diamond 1971, Mack & Wright 1996). -

Papua New Guinea Huon Peninsula Extension I 25th to 30th June 2019 (6 days) Trip Report Huon Astrapia by Holger Teichmann Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Adam Walleyn Rockjumper Birding Tours www.rockjumperbirding.com Trip Report – RBL Papua New Guinea Huon Extension I 2019 2 Tour in Detail Our group met up in Port Moresby for the late morning flight to Lae’s Nadzab airport. Upon arrival, we transferred to our comfortable hotel on the outskirts of Lae city. A walk around the expansive grounds turned up some 23 species to get our lists well underway, including Orange-bellied and Pink-spotted Fruit Dove (the latter of the distinct and range-restricted plumbeicollis race), Torresian Imperial Pigeon, Eclectus Parrot, and Yellow-faced Myna, not to mention perhaps 1,000 Spectacled Flying Foxes creating quite the sight and sound! Early the next morning we were back at Nadzab airport, where a quick scan of the airfield produced some Horsfield’s Bush Larks and also excellent looks at a male Papuan Harrier that did a close flyby being bombarded by numerous Masked Lapwings! We were soon boarding our charter flight Pink-spotted Fruit Doves by Holger Teichmann over the rugged Huon mountains, although we quickly entered dense clouds and could see nothing of these impressive mountains. After some half an hour of flying through thick cloud on the plane’s GPS track, we suddenly descended and made an uphill landing at Kabwum airstrip! Our land cruiser was there, waiting for us, and after loading bags and ourselves onboard we made the bumpy drive up many switchbacks to reach the high ridge above Kabwum. -

Email: <[email protected] Abstract Papua New Guinea is the third largest remaining area of tropical forest after the Amazon and Congo basins. However, the growing intensity of large-scale slash-and-burn agriculture and logging call for conservation research to assess how local people´s traditional land-use practices result in conservation of local biodiversity, of which a species-rich and diverse component is the avian community. With this in mind, I conducted a preliminary survey of birds in small-scale secondary plots and in adjacent primary forest in Wanang Conservation Area in Papua New Guinea. I used mist-netting, point counts, and transect walks to compare the bird communities of 7-year-old secondary growth, and neighboring primary forest. The preliminary survey lasted 10 days and was conducted during the dry season (July) of 2008. I found no significant differences in summed bird abundances between forest types. However, species richness was higher in primary forest (98 species) than in secondary (78 species). The response of individual feeding guilds was also variable. Two habitats differed mainly in presence of canopy frugivores, which were more abundant (more than 80%) in primary than in secondary forests. A large difference (70%) was found also in understory and mid-story insectivores. Species occurring mainly in secondary forest were Hooded Butcherbird (Cracticus cassicus), Brown Oriole (Oriolus szalayi), and Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides). -

West Papua 28 June – 3 August 2018 Rob Gordijn & Helen Rijkes ([email protected]) - http://www.penguinbirding.com Introduction West Papua was the third stop in our year of travelling. Visiting Papua had been on our wish list for years and since West Papua has become a lot easier in recent years in terms of logistics and is still a lot cheaper than PNG we decided to primarily focus on the BOP’s (and other specialties) on the Indonesian side. (After our trip to West Papua we travel to PNG but there we focus mainly on the surrounding islands.) This report covers the 5,5-week trip to West Papua where we visited Numfor & Biak, Sorong (inc. Klasow Valley), Waigeo, Nimbokrang, Snow Mountains and the Arfaks. We were joined for most of the trip by Sjoerd Radstaak (Sorong until Arfaks), Marten Hornsveld, Vivian Jacobs, Bas Garcia (Waigeo until Arfaks) and Sander Lagerveld (Nimbokrang & Snow Mountains). Sander also visited the surroundings of Merauke (Wasur NP) for some southern specialities. Since we are still traveling this is a preliminary trip report with our main findings and a rough annotated species list (counts are incomplete and subspecies indication is missing). BEST of WEST PAPUA 2017 Tour Report
The display of the amazing Wilson’s Bird-of-paradise was out of this world (Josh Bergmark) BEST OF WEST PAPUA 5 – 19 AUGUST 2017 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS and JOSH BERGMARK The incandescent Wilson’s Bird-of-paradise and the seemingly rather modestly attired Superb Bird-of- paradise were, by far, the favourite birds of our new “Best of West Papua” tour. The former because the flamboyant male showed so very well as he was cleaning his dance court and displaying a bit to his lady and the latter because we were so incredibly fortunate to be able to observe the very rarely seen full display of this fairly common and widespread, well-named species. We were the first birding tour ever to be able to offer the unique, out of this world spectacle of a dancing male Superb Bird-of-paradise to our clients! Both Birds-of-paradise were observed at close range from well positioned hides. In fact, the five most fascinating 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Best of West Papua www.birdquest-tours.com The male Black Sicklebill on his display post (tour participant Marcel Holyoak) birds of the tour were all admired and studied from hides, as we were also lucky enough to appreciate the intricate display of a fabulous male Black Sicklebill, the wonderful ballerina dance of a male Western Parotia (for some) and the unique fashion-conscious behaviour of a decidedly unpretentiously-plumaged Vogelkop Bowerbird at his truly amazing bower. In contrast to the situation in Papua New Guinea, where hides are virtually non-existent, these simple, easily built structures make all the difference in getting the most astonishing insight in the behaviour and appreciation of some of the most appealing birds of our planet. -

Introduction The New Guinea Region Our region of coverage follows Mayr (1941: vi), who defined the natural region that encompasses the avifauna of New Guinea, naming it the “New Guinea Region.” It comprises the great tropical island of New Guinea as well as an array of islands lying on its continental shelf or immediately offshore. This region extends from the equator to latitude 12o south and from longitude 129o east to 155o east; it is 2,800 km long by 750 km wide and supports the largest remaining contiguous tract of old-growth humid tropical forest in the Asia-Pacific (Beehler 1993a). The Region includes the Northwestern Islands (Raja Ampat group) of the far west—Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Misool, Kofiau, Gam, Gebe, and Gag; the Aru Islands of the southwest—Wokam, Kobroor, Trangan, and others; the Bay Islands of Geelvink/Cenderawasih Bay—Biak-Supiori, Numfor, Mios Num, and Yapen; Dolak Island of south-central New Guinea (also known as Dolok, Kimaam, Kolepom, Yos Sudarso, or Frederik Hendrik); Daru and Kiwai Islands of eastern south-central New Guinea; islands of the north coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG)—Kairiru, Muschu, Manam, Bagabag, and Karkar; and the Southeastern (Milne Bay) Islands of the far southeast—Goodenough, Fergusson, Normanby, Kiriwina, Kaileuna, Wood- lark, Misima, Tagula/Sudest, and Rossel, plus many groups of smaller islands (see the endpapers for a graphic delimitation of the Region). -

Wilhelm, the highest peak in Papua New Guinea, represents one of the best-surveyed elevational gradients in the Indo- Pacific region. Based on field work undertaken in 2013 and 2015, we report range extensions, new elevational records and add 24 species to the list of bird species recorded along this gradient. This includes information on poorly known species such as Long-billed Cuckoo Chrysococcyx megarhynchus, Leaden Honeyeater Ptiloprora plumbea, Yellow-breasted Satinbird Loboparadisaea sericea and Sooty Shrikethrush Colluricincla tenebrosa. New Guinea is the largest tropical island (>750,000 km2) and well known for its exceptional avian diversity, characterised by a large number of endemic lineages (Pratt & Beehler 2014, Beehler & Pratt 2016). During the last 200 years, the island has been the subject of a multitude of expeditions and surveys that have aimed to document the distribution and diversity of its avifauna (summarised in Pratt & Beehler 2014). New Guinea and neighbouring archipelagos have also served as a natural laboratory that has aided in the development of modern biological theories and syntheses pertaining to speciation, community assemblies, and the effects of climate change on biodiversity and biogeography, often using birds as model organisms (e.g. Diamond 1973, Deiner et al. 2011, Jønsson et al. 2011, Freeman & Class Freeman 2014a, Irestedt et al. -

WOLF VICTOR EMANUEL NATURE TOURS, INC. 2525 WALLINGWOOD DRIVE, SUITE 1003 AUSTIN, TEXAS 78746 WWW.VENTBIRD.COM No group of birds says “New Guinea” more than the fabulous Birds-of-Paradise, noted for their brilliant plumage and elaborate ornamentation, and they were the focus of this Extension. Very few are found in the lowlands, so to see a variety of them we headed for the Central Highlands. We couldn’t have been more successful in our quest! After a difficult check-in at the Rabaul Airport, with no electricity and everything done by hand, we finally took off for Port Moresby, only to arrive and find that our flight to Mt. Hagen had been canceled. We became “the disrupted,” but got a very good meal out of it that evening! Early the next morning we flew to Mt. Hagen in beautiful weather, coming in right over the incredibly rugged and heavily forested spine of the mountains. By lunchtime we had arrived at rustic Kumul Lodge in the upper montane forest, where an amazing sight greeted us as we stepped onto the back balcony overlooking their bird- feeding tables. There were birds simply everywhere, the gorgeous Ribbon-tailed Astrapias the standout. Never did we imagine that Crested Berrypecker © David Wolf we would see our first spectacular birds-of- paradise right in front of us at close range! Male, female, juvenile—all were there as we pulled out cameras and fired away. -

Email: p.oliver@griffith.edu.au Abstract. Australia and New Guinea (together referred to as Sahul) were linked by land for much of the late Tertiary and share many biotic elements. However, New Guinea is dominated by rainforest, and northern Australia by savannah. Resolving patterns of biotic interchange between these two regions is critical to understanding the expansion and contraction of both habitat types. The green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) has a vast range across northern and eastern Australia and New Guinea. An assessment of mitochondrial and morphological diversity in this nominal taxon in New Guinea reveals two taxa. True Litoria caerulea occurs in disjunct savannahs of the Trans-Fly, Central Province and across northern Australia, with very low genetic divergence, implying late Pleistocene connectivity. -

Nobody wants to miss seeing cassowary, but it was looking like we might until this one wandered onto the beach at Etty Bay and proceeded to forage unconcernedly down the whole length of the beach, accompanied by an entourage of admirers, our group included. What an amazing encounter! Photo by guide Jay VanderGaast. Australia and Papua New Guinea are a natural fit to pair up on a tour such as this. Aside from being close together, they share a similar avifauna, with a lot of families, and a fair number of species, occurring in both countries. On the other hand, they also each have their own distinct flavor, and plenty of endemics, making them both excellent destinations on their own. Quite obviously, no single tour to either country can even come close to cleaning up on the birds, and this tour certainly makes no attempt to do that. It is more a tour of highlights, and one thing is for certain, there were plenty of those everywhere we went! Things started off on a high note on our first outing in the Cairns region, where in addition to a nice list of expected species, we tallied a trio of Lovely Fairywrens at Cattana Wetlands and a gorgeous Little Kingfisher at Yorkey's Knob, and it just kept on rolling from there. A few days later, by the time we moved on to PNG, we'd enjoyed a close encounter with an imposing Southern Cassowary at Etty Bay, admired the brilliant colors of Wompoo and Rose-crowned Fruit-Doves, had an impromptu photos session with a stunning Spotted Harrier, and been introduced to an assortment of range-restricted specialties of the Atherton Tablelands, from quirky Chowchillas kicking leaves around in the understory, to the display of a shimmering male Victoria's Riflebird, to the construction prowess of a Golden Bowerbird.
