Yaroslav Gorbachov Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago [email protected] Abstract As attested, the Slavic pantheon is rather well-populated. However, many of its nu- merous members are known only by their names mentioned in passing in one or two medieval documents. Among those barely attested Slavic deities, there are a few whose very existence may be doubted. This does not deter some scholars from articulating rather elaborate theories about Slavic mythology and cosmology. The article discusses two obscure Slavic deities, “Black God” and “White God,” and, in particular, reexamines the extant primary sources on them. It is argued that “Black God” worship was limited to the Slavic North-West, and “White God” never existed. Keywords Chernobog – Belbog – Belbuck – Tjarnaglófi – Vij – Slavic dualism Introduction A discussion of Slavic mythology and pantheons is always a difficult, risky, and thankless business. There is no dearth of gods to talk about. In the literature they are discussed with confidence and, at times, some bold conclusions about Slavic cosmology are made, based on the sheer fact of the existence of a par- ticular deity. In reality, however, many of the “known” Slavic gods are not much more than a bare theonym mentioned once or twice in what often is a late, un- reliable, or poorly interpretable document. The available evidence is undeni- ably scanty and the dots to be connected are spaced far apart. A generous grant from the GISELA UND REINHOLD HXCKER STIFTUNG for our editorial work in 2001 will enable us in EBGR 1999 to close most of the gaps left in this and in earlier issues. In EBGR 1998 we have focused on new epigraphic finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, and epigraphic corpora, but we have also summarized a few archaeological studies which make extensive use of the epigraphic material; for the significant contribu tion of archaeology to the study of Greek religion the reader should consuIt the Chronique archéologique in Kernos. As in earlier issues we have not limited ourselves to epigraphy but have included a few references to important papyro logical sources (nOS 29, 134, 168, 181, 280, 300) and to the evidence provided by the documents in Linear B (nO 50). -

Ten Thousand Eyes: The Story of Ἄργος Μυριωπός Alexander Nikolaev HE MYTH OF ARGUS was well known in antiquity, to judge from sixth- and fifth-century literature and art. Its T basic constituents are as follows: when Io was turned into a heifer by Zeus, the titan Argus was appointed by Hera as her guard, and while on this duty he was killed by Hermes.1 The most conspicuous and unusual feature of Argus is the number of his eyes, which in different sources ranges between three and several thousand. The purpose of this paper is to make a new suggestion regarding the origin of the motif of the myriad-eyed cowherd. 1. Let us remind ourselves of the relevant sources. In Aesch. Supp. the story of Io is treated in the stichomythia between the chorus of Danaids and Pelasgus, the king of Argos; Io’s guard is mentioned at 303–305, described as πανόπτης οἰοβουκόλος, “all-seeing cowherd of one [heifer].”2 A somewhat more de- tailed description is in [Aesch.] PV: in her monody Io calls Argus a “myriad-eyed cowherd” (568, µυριωπὸν … βούταν) and later an “earth-born herdsman, staring with his many eyes” (677–679, βουκόλος δὲ γηγενής … πυκνοῖς ὄσσοις δεδορκώς). Bacchylides, too, was familiar with the myth: in his poem about Io (19.19–25) he describes Argus as “looking every way with tireless eyes” (ὄµµασι βλέποντα πάντοθεν ἀκαµάτοις) 1 For variants of the myth of Io see L. The relationship between Arabic Alla¯h and Syriac Alla¯ha¯ 1 David Kiltz Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Potsdam Abstract Various etymologies have been proposed for Arabic allah but also for Syriac allaha. It has often been proposed that the Arabic word was borrowed from Syriac. This article takes a comprehensive look at the linguistic evidence at hand. Es- pecially, it takes into consideration more recent epigraphical material which sheds light on the development of the Arabic language. Phonetic and morphological analysis of the data confirms the Arabic origin of the word allah, whereas the prob- lems of the Syriac form allaha are described, namely that the Syriac form differs from that of other Aramaic dialects and begs explanation, discussing also the possi- bility that the Syriac word is a loan from Arabic. The final part considers qur#anic allah in its cultural and literary context and the role of the Syriac word in that con- text. The article concludes, that both, a strictly linguistic, as well as cultural and literary analysis reveals a multilayered interrelation between the two terms in ques- tion. The linguistic analysis shows, that Arabic allah must be a genuinely Arabic word, whereas in the case of Syriac allaha, the possibility of both, a loan and a spe- cific inner-Aramaic development are laid out. Apart from linguistic considerations, the historical and cultural situation in Northern Mesopotamia, i.e. the early Arab presence in that region is taken into scrutiny. In turn, a possible later effect of the prominent use of Syriac allaha on the use in the Qur#an is considered. -

Even if Egyptian self- identity was defined as intrinsically opposed to the Other, i.e. the foreigner, Egypt always maintained contact with its neighbors, particularly Nubia and the Near East. These intercultural contacts had an effect on the religion. Since the earliest times, deities like Dedoun, Ha, or Sopdu formed an integral part of the Egyptian pantheon, so much so that their likely foreign origin is not immediately perceptible. -

Szewska 49, 50-139 Wrocław, Poland e-mail: [email protected] The expression “god of the father(s)” is mentioned in textual sources from the whole area of the Fertile Crescent, between the third and first millennium B.C. The god of the fathers – aside from assumptions of the tutelary deity as a god of ancestors or a god who is a deified ancestor – was situated in the centre and the very core of religious life among all peoples that lived in the ancient Near East. This paper is focused on the importance of the cult of Ilaba in the royal families of the ancient Near East. It also investigates the possible source and route of spreading of the cult of Ilaba, which could have been created in southern Mesopotamia, then brought to other areas. Hypotheti- cally, it might have come to the Near East from the upper Euphrates. Key words: religion, Ilaba, royal inscriptions, Sargon of Akkade, god of the father, tutelary deity, personal god. The main aim of this study is to trace and describe the worship of a “god of the fa- ther”, known in Akkadian sources under the name of Ilaba, and his place in the reli- gious life of the ancient peoples belonging to the Semitic cultural circle. -

Diffusion of Indo-European Theonyms : what they show us. June 2005. 1. Argument. In presenting this collection of Vedic and Indo-European theonyms I discuss the derivation of some and argue that, since the Ṛgveda alone contains all these names, the RV1 must be older than other IE1 texts and more clearly indicative of the Proto-Indo-European culture, while Vedic is both older and closer to PIE than any other branch. Moreover, since the RV is richer in cultural and linguistic elements than other early IE traditions (Kazanas 2004, 2005) we can conclude that the Vedic speakers moved very little or not at all from the PIE homeland. These ideas have been published elsewhere and attracted some criticism mainly from J. P. Mallory; this is now being refuted. 2. In presenting his overview of G. Dumézil’s work on IE comparative mythology, C.S. Littleton wrote that in Dumézil’s view Roman religion can be understood only in relation to other IE religious systems and that “the most fruitful source of comparative materials is the ancient Indic literature” (1973: 118). This paper confirms this view but in a context much broader than just Roman religion. The Table of IE deities that follows was presented (but not so full) in various papers from 1999 onward. The most recent one was my ‘Indigenous Indo-Aryans and the Rigveda’ (Kazanas 2002). In the present version I have made several corrections and additions. In the Table I put the 20 Vedic names on the left and the others on the right for the simple and almost incredible reason that while the Vedic Tradition has all these names and cognates with one or other IE branches, no two other traditions have a common theonym to the exclusion of the RV.
