Anahtar Kelimeler: Elma, Islah, Çeşit SUMMARY A GENERAL VIEW TO CURRENT APPLE BREEDING PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD Apple is a fruit species grown intensively in five continents of world. Studies on apple cultivar development were started many years ago. Today, a large number of public and private apple breeding programmes are carried out all over the world. The release of a new cultivar usually takes 15-20 years. Nonetheless, it is known that there are over 6000 regionally important cultivars in the world and new cultivars are added to this number every year. Almost every apple growing country performs one or more apple breeding programs. In this study, existing apple breeding programmes were ex- amined; the gathered information was summarised and status of Turkey in this field was evaluated. Mechanical handling and transportation may cause general wounding, leading Received in revised form 16 July 2015 to dramatic quality decay and fruit loss, thus to a negative economic impact. Although the majority of the Accepted 17 July 2015 research addressing fruit quality has mainly focused on the flesh, the multi-layered peel tissue complex Available online 11 August 2015 represents the first natural barrier of a fruit. In this study, a texture analyzer was employed to investigate the peel contribution on the general fruit firmness of apple, assessing a germplasm collection composed Keywords: by 65 accessions after two months of cold storage. This device generated a mechanical force– Peel contribution displacement profile from which a set of analytical parameters was derived. A comparative analysis Fruit firmness Postharvest between intact and peeled portions performed on each single fruit, enabled the characterization of the Apple contribution of the peel on fruit firmness. By analysing the phenotypic variance of these analytical Fruit quality parameters within the apple collection by a multivariate statistical approach, two clusters were Storability identified, amongst which a specific set of apple cultivars was distinguished by a superior peel contribution.
