    Ilmari Krohn and the Early French Contacts of Finnish Musicology: Mobility, Networking and Interaction1 Helena Tyrväinen Abstract Conceived in memory of the late Professor of Musicology of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Urve Lippus (1950–2015) and to honour her contribution to music history research, the article analyses transcultural relations and the role of cultural capitals in the discipline during its early phase in the uni- versity context. The focus is on the early French contacts of the founder of institutional Finnish musicology, the Uni- versity of Helsinki Professor Ilmari Krohn (1867–1960) and his pupils. The analysis of Krohn’s mobility, networking and interaction is based on his correspondence and documentation concerning his early congress journeys to London (1891) and to Paris (1900). Two French correspondents stand out in this early phase of his career as a musicologist: Julien Tiersot in the area of comparative research on traditional music, and Georges Houdard in the field of Gregorian chant and neume notation. By World War I Krohn was quite well-read in French-language musicology. Paris served him also as a base for international networking more generally. Accomplished musicians, Krohn and his musicology students Armas Launis, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Haapanen even had an artistic bond with French repertoires. My results contradict the claim that early Finnish musicology was exclusively the domain of German influences.     Which of Sibelius’s 379 miniatures are remarkable? Folke Gräsbeck "Auch kleine Dinge können uns entzücken…" (Paul Heyse) Reckoning that Sibelius’s compositions amount to circa 600 separate pieces (youth works included, fragments omitted), we have to consider that roughly more than half of them are miniatures. I have calculated that nearly 380 original, separate pieces last less than 4 minutes. If we reject only Sibelius’s miniatures, we omit practically half his production. ‘I am a man of the orchestra᾿, Sibelius proclaimed. Needless to say, his successful orchestral works, generally regarded as national monuments in Finland, are impressive frescos; nonetheless, these large-scale pieces are full of carefully elaborated details. What about the painstakingly worked-out details in his small works? Do they lack credibility because they are included in miniatures? Sibelius ‘forged᾿ the motifs and melodies in the small pieces no less carefully, sometimes referring to his miniatures as his ‘suffering pieces᾿ or 'pain pieces'[1]. Probably he would not have referred to them in this way if he had not valued them highly. The designation ‘salon piece’ is clumsy as applied to Sibelius’s miniatures. Very few of them were purposely composed as standard salon music – they are all too refined and abstract, and lack the lax and redundant reiterations so typical of such pieces. Perhaps the Valse lyrique, Op. 96a, approaches a real salon piece, but the material soars far above standard salon vocabulary, the lyrical sections, for example, revealing remarkable intimacy and character. Nowadays, it is common to employ the designation ‘Salon music’ in a pejorative sense.

Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting For the material of my doctoral project, I have chosen the three symphonies of the Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), all of which I have performed in my doctoral concerts during years 2012–2017. In my doctoral thesis, I concentrate on his first symphony, Op. 29, but to fully understand the context it would be beneficial to familiarize oneself with my doctoral concerts on the accompanying DVDs, as well as with the available commercial and archival recordings of Madetoja’s three symphonies. The aim of this thesis is to understand the effect of scholarly activity (in this case working with manuscripts and recordings) on the artistic and practical aspects of a conductor’s work; this is not a study on the music of Madetoja per se, but I am using these hitherto unknown symphonies as a case study for my research inquiries. My main research inquiry could be formulated as: What kind of added value the study of composer’s manuscripts and other contemporary sources, the analysis of the existing recordings of the work by other performers, and the experience gained during repeated performances of the work, bring to performing (conducting) the work, as opposed to working straightforwardly using only the readily available published edition(s)? My methods are the analysis of musical scores, manuscripts and recordings, critical reflection on my own artistic practices, and two semi-structured interviews with conductor colleagues.

    KALEVI AHO ORCHESTRAL WORKS KALEVI AHO – a composer of contrasts and surprises alevi Aho (born in Finland in 1949) possesses one of today’s most exciting creative voices. A composer with one foot in the past and one in the pres- K ent, he combines influences from the most disparate sources and transforms them through his creative and emotional filter into something quite unique. He does not believe in complexity simply for the sake of it. His music always communicates directly with the listener, being simultaneously ‘easy’ yet ‘difficult’, but never banal, over-intellectual, introvert or aloof. In his own words, “A composer should write all sorts of works, so that something will always evoke an echo in people in different life situations. Music should come to the help of people in distress or give them an ex- perience of beauty.” Kalevi Aho is equally natural and unaffected in his symphonies and operas as he is in his intimate musical miniatures. Monumental landscapes painted in broad brush- strokes go hand in hand with delicate watercolours, serious artistic confessions and humour. The spectrum of human emotions is always wide, and he never lets his lis- teners off lightly. He poses questions and sows the seeds of thoughts and impulses that continue to germinate long after the last note has died away. “His slightly unassuming yet always kind appearance is vaguely reminiscent of Shosta- kovich, while his musical voice, with its pluralistic conception of the world and its intricate balance between the deliberately banal and the subtle, is undoubtedly closer to late Mahler.” It is easy to agree with this anonymous opinion of Kalevi Aho.

Ensimmäinen versio ilmestyi jo vuonna 1989 tilanteessa, jossa kansallissäveltäjämme tuotannon perusteellinen tutkimus ja kunnollisen teosluettelon valmistaminen oli paradoksaalisesti vasta käynnistynyt. Ohje- luetteloa kootessani tiesin monien asioiden tulevaisuudessa muuttuvan, mutta perusluettelon tarvetta ei voinut kiistää. Kun toinen, korjattu painos vuonna 1996 ilmestyi, ratkaiseva askel tutkimuspuo- lella oli jo otettu. Fabian Dahlström oli saanut teosluettelonsa niin pitkälle, että oli kyennyt nume- roimaan opusnumerottomat teokset JS-koodilla. He was also a rather minor composer, but he was perspicacious enough to recognize true genius when he saw it. Thus he became Jean Sibelius’s first music publisher and one of his first true supporters, as well as taking part as a viola player in several Sibelius pre- mières. Karl Fredrik’s son, Carl-Johan, was solo cellist in the Helsinki Philhar - monic Orchestra and himself participated in many performances of Sibelius’s music, both orchestral and chamber. Carl-Johan’s daughter Margaretha is known as a prima ballerina assoluta at the Finnish Opera, and mine is the honour to be her son. Basically, since I started BIS in 1973, I have had a dream to record ‘every-note- he-ever-wrote’ by Sibelius, but not before I met Andrew Barnett, one of today’s great Sibe lius cognoscenti, did any firm plan materialize. True, the recording of the complete piano music had been started, as had that of the symphonies, but Andrew injected plan ning and system into the project. Great help was also received from the legendary Sibelius biographer Erik Tawaststjerna, as well as from the doyen of present-day Sibe lius scholars Fabian Dahlström. The project was not an easy one.

    Agnese Egliņa Agnese Egliņa is currently amongst the most active and versatile Latvian pianists – a passionate soloist, a captivating chamber musician and a sensitive accompanist. In 2010 she received the Latvian Grand Music Award 2010 for Excellent Work in Ensemble. During her studies at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music together with the clarinetist Mārtiņš Circenis she won the 1st prize in the Best Chamber Ensemble of JVLMA competition; in 2007 she received the Annual JVLMA and Swedbank Award for the Young Musician of the Year. Agnese Egliņa has received diplomas as the best accompanist in various competitions. She has taught at Emīls Dārziņš Secondary Music School and at Riga Cathedral Choir School and has held a lecturer’s position at the JVLMA Department of Accompanists. Agnese’s stage partners include the singer Elīna Volkmane, flutist Dita Krenberga (trio DEKO), clarinetists Mārtiņš Circenis and Ints Dālderis (trio DEKO), violinist Jana Ozoliņa (Duo extatique), double bass player Gunārs Upatnieks, Kurland Quintet, clarinetist Chen Halevi, oboist Christian Schmitt and other distinguished artists. Agnese has collaborated with the Latvian Radio Choir and with all professional orchestras of Latvia. She is a member of the extravagant Latvian trio Art-i-shock. Agnese has premiered several Latvian contemporary music opuses and is actively engaged in modern music promotion. Agnese has performed across the whole Europe, in the USA and in several countries of Africa. Next year her schedule will take her to the Peoples Republic of China, Republic of South Africa, and to several European countries. Agnese Egliņa studied piano at her native Liepāja and graduated with Master’s Degree the class of professor Arnis Zandmanis at Jāzeps Vītola Latvian Academy of Music.
