    Malibongwe Let us praise the women Portraits by Gisele Wulfsohn In 1990, inspired by major political changes in our country, I decided to embark on a long-term photographic project – black and white portraits of some of the South African women who had contributed to this process. In a country previously dominated by men in power, it seemed to me that the tireless dedication and hard work of our mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters needed to be highlighted. I did not only want to include more visible women, but also those who silently worked so hard to make it possible for change to happen. Due to lack of funding and time constraints, including raising my twin boys and more recently being diagnosed with cancer, the portraits have been taken intermittently. Many of the women photographed in exile have now returned to South Africa and a few have passed on. While the project is not yet complete, this selection of mainly high profile women represents a history and inspiration to us all. These were not only tireless activists, but daughters, mothers, wives and friends. Gisele Wulfsohn 2006 ADELAIDE TAMBO 1929 – 2007 Adelaide Frances Tsukudu was born in 1929. She was 10 years old when she had her first brush with apartheid and politics. A police officer in Top Location in Vereenigng had been killed. Adelaide’s 82-year-old grandfather was amongst those arrested. As the men were led to the town square, the old man collapsed. Adelaide sat with him until he came round and witnessed the young policeman calling her beloved grandfather “boy”.

We already know that heritage can be tangible and intangible. South Africa’s heritage include special people from our past. Frances Baard is one of the tangible heritage of our country. She was born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape province and she is the most significant person in our history. Frances Baard was a teacher by profession, she was against apartheid and did not like the way black people were treated during this era. Before 1994, black South Africans did not have human rights. Frances Baard then decided to become active in the struggle against apartheid. Miss Ngema - Pitlochry Primary School Frances Baard achievements Frances Baard used her many talents to fight for the rights of black South Africans. As she became active in the struggle, she was imprisoned by the government of apartheid for fighting for the rights of her fellow black South Africans. After her release, she continued to work towards a democratic government. She died in 1997 when she was very old but she lived long enough to cast her vote in the first democratic election in 1994.

RELAYS IN REBELLION: THE POWER IN LILIAN NGOYI AND FANNIE LOU HAMER by CATHY L. FREEMAN Under the Direction of Michelle Brattain ABSTRACT This thesis compares how Lilian Ngoyi of South Africa and Fannie Lou Hamer of the United States crafted political identities and assumed powerful leadership, respectively, in struggles against racial oppression via the African National Congress and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. The study asserts that Ngoyi and Hamer used alternative sources of personal power which arose from their location in the intersecting social categories of culture, gender and class. These categories challenge traditional disciplinary boundaries and complicate any analysis of political economy, state power relations and black liberation studies which minimize the contributions of women. Also, by analyzing resistance leadership squarely within both African and North American contexts, this thesis answers the call of scholar Patrick Manning for a “homeland and diaspora” model which positions Africa itself within the historiography of transnational academic debates.

I met Raymond Mhlaba and Robert Mji who were the ANC leaders in the region.     CRUTIHG S0I;LDARITY: WOD AND WMUING VO~AT RIE CAPE, 194fMXl by Iris Berger If the 1940s and 1950s presented women garment workers in the Transvaal with challenges that ultimately threatened some of the basic principles for which they had fought in the past, another group of working women replaced them on the cutting edge of prpgressive political change: the food and canning workers of the Cape Peninsula. Living and labouring in small rural communities in the heart of the fruit growing areas, their experience was very different from that of most garment workers at the time, whether in the north or in nearby Cape Town. Before the enforcement of the Group Areas Act, their racially mixed communities and factories strengthened the struggle for non-racial solidarity, while the clusters of tiny houses in townships and camps near the factories contributed to a deep involvement in local issues. Though women made up a high percentage of the workers, gender usually was conceptualized as a political question in the context of struggles defined on class or racial grounds. In these struggles, however, and particularly in the campaign against passes for African women in the Cape, women food and canning workers played a significant role. While women's labour history is replete with examples of mixed (or even female) unions in which women had only a faint or muted voice, the Food and Canning Workers' Union (FCWU) and its African counterpart (AFCW) were distinct. Not only did women hold a disproportionate number of leadership positions, but in many instances of strikes and political actions women workers were far more fnvolved than men.

    A NATION BEHIND BARS A.ZANZOLO NOBODY REALLY KNOWS how many political prisoners there are in South Africa. Estimates range from four to tcn thousand. For a long time it was thought that the number in the Eastern Cape was over nine hundred. Then the notorious Mr. Vorsler. who has now become Prime Minister of South Africa, revealed in Parliament that there were no less than 1,669 prisoners in the Eastern Cape alone! This was almost double the accepted estimate. This could mean there has been under-estimation of the national total. Bearing in mind that the authorities themselves will do everything to conceal the true Slate of affairs we can expect that the real figures are much higher than generally accepted. Robben Island. Glamorgan Prison in East London called KwaNongqongqo by the Africans. Lecukop prison on the Rand­ already a byword for brutality against prisoners. Port Elizabeth Central. Pieterntaritzburg gaol. Pretoria Central. Viljoensdrift. Kroon­ stad. Umtata. Kokstad. The list is endless. There has always been a legend about Robben Island. The most persistent was built around the story of the famed war strategist and prophet Makana, otherwise known as Nxele(the left-handed). After the defeat of the AmaNdlambe in the fifth Eastern frontier war in 1819 Makana was sent to Robben Island as a prisoner of the British. Later the authorities let it be known that Makana had died whilst trying to escape from the island. The Africans were naturally suspicious of this version of Makana's death. It was prophesied that one day Makana would arise from Robben Island to lead the people in the struggle against the White invaders.
