Miss Ngema - Pitlochry Primary School Introduction This week we will look at heritage in people’s achievements, here we are going to talk about Frances Baard from Kimberley in the Northern Cape province. We already know that heritage can be tangible and intangible. ’s heritage include special people from our past. Frances Baard is one of the tangible heritage of our country. She was born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape province and she is the most significant person in our history. Frances Baard was a teacher by profession, she was against and did not like the way black people were treated during this era. Before 1994, black South Africans did not have human rights. Frances Baard then decided to become active in the struggle against apartheid.

Frances Baard used her many talents to fight for the rights of black South Africans. As she became active in the struggle, she was imprisoned by the government of apartheid for fighting for the rights of her fellow black South Africans. After her release, she continued to work towards a democratic government. She died in 1997 when she was very old but she lived long enough to cast her vote in the first democratic election in 1994. After she died, she achieved legend status and is an example of tangible heritage. A district in Kimberley was renamed Frances Baard District municipality in her honour.

Miss Ngema - Pitlochry Primary School Heritage in names : Gariep Dam Free State • Names of places also form part of our heritage. This includes special things like landmarks such as rivers, dams and mountains. The Gariep Dam is located in South Africa , near the town of Norvalspont, bordering the Free State and Eastern Cape provinces along the Orange River. Its primary purpose is for irrigation, domestic and industrial use as well for power generation. The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa. It forms the boundary of the Free State. In Sesotho, it is known as Sanqu River. This flows into the Geriep Dam, the largest dam in South Africa. • When this dam was built, it was called the Verwoerd Dam. Dr Verwoerd was a white South African leader during apartheid. During this era, black South Africans had no rights, they were inferior to the Whites. White people were treated far better then Black people. Dr Verwoerd was best believed to be a hero and most of the things were named after him. After the 1994 democratic elections, the new democratic government renamed the Verwoerd dam. It is now called “ the Gariep Dam” , the term gariep is from the San language.
