By November 2000, she had established herself as a respected teacher and she helped facilitate some of the first RYT teacher trainings in Cincinnati. With nearly twenty years experience and ten thousand hours of teaching and training other teachers, Amber shares her depth of wisdom with her students. In 2007, she opened Yoga Ah while she continued to work with Schultz at Nauliland (his school in Sonoma) until he passed in 2011. Although a busy mother of two and a studio owner, Amber assembled and wrote a 500 hour training to continue the work that he had set in motion. In 2016, the Yoga Alliance Professional, U.K. recognized her training manual. As a pioneer in the Rocket Vinyasa Series, Amber loves to travel around the globe to teach others to teach the modern progression of this powerful lineage, from Krishnamacharya to Larry Schultz. .

ALWAYS FREE ISSUE NO. 6 TWISTING PEACOCK MAY 2011 A Note From Rom! News It’s been some time since I put out a newsletter. I’m not sure where the time goes, but here we are almost the middle of 2011. I hope it’s been a happy and content year for you all so far. 2010 finished with a bang at Twisting Peacock. Night classes were not only full, they were alive with yogic energy. The word is obviously spreading that people are loving yoga and it’s becoming their exercise of choice. And why wouldn’t you, when you finish you leave the room in this relaxed high...without touching any illegal drugs. You come in exhausted, angry, anxious or stressed and you leave like you’ve just returned from the best holiday you’ve ever had. Imagine feeling like that everyday! As you know I have been away for most of this year, continuing to learn more about yoga and getting inspired by some amazing teachers in Thailand. FINDING STILLNESS I spent 4 weeks at a stunning (although somewhat too secluded) jungle location discovering the power of Try softening the eyes in poses. Let the softening of the eyes come Ashtanga Vinyasa and Rocket Ashtanga Yoga as with a softening of self-judgement, destructive comparisons, and mental rigidness. YOGA BODY Praise for Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice Mark Singleton “Mark Singleton’s Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice is an out- standing scholarly work which brings so much insight and clarity to the historic and cultural background of modern hathạ yoga. I highly recommend this book, especially for all sincere students of yoga.”—John Friend, founder of Anusara Yoga “From the moment I started reading Mark Singleton’s Yoga Body I couldn’t put it down. It is beautifully written, extensively researched, and full of fascinating information. It stands alone in its depth of insight into a subject which has intrigued me for forty years.”—David Williams, the fi rst non-Indian to learn the complete Ashtanga Yoga syllabus “Mark Singleton’s book Yoga Body traces the evolution of the ever-expanding practice of a¯sana world-wide. His work offers a much needed historical perspec- tive that will help correct much of the mythology and group-think that is emerg- ing in the modern a¯sana based ‘yoga world.’ Any serious a¯sana practitioner who wishes to understand the place of a¯sana in the greater tradition of yoga will do well to read it carefully.”—Gary Krafstow, founder of the American Viniyoga Institute, author of Yoga for Wellness and Yoga for Transformation “Mark Singleton has written a sweeping and nuanced account of the origins and development of modern postural yoga in early twentieth-century India and the West, arguing convincingly that yoga as we know it today does not fl ow directly from the Yoga Sūtras or India’s medieval hathạ yoga traditions, but rather emerged out of a confl uence of practices, movements and ideologies, ranging from contortionist acts in carnival sideshows, British Army calisthenics and women’s stretching exercises to social Darwinism, eugenics, and the Indian nationalist movement.

India Key Words : Indian relations, Balance of power, China Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, also known as Ashtanga Yoga, is a style of yoga founded and popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois, and which is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga. Pattabhi Jois began his yoga studies in 1927 at the age of 12, and by 1948 had established an institute for teaching the specific yoga practice known as Ashtanga (Sanskrit for “eight-limbed”) Vinyasa Yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is named after the eight limbs of yoga mentioned in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Power Yoga and vinyasa yoga are generic terms that may refer to any type of vigorous yoga exercise derived from Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Principles : The term vinyâsa refers to the alignment of movement and breath, a method which turns static asanas into a dynamic flow. The length of one inhale or one exhale dictates the length of time spent transitioning between asanas. Asanas are then held for a predefined number of breaths. In effect, attention is placed on the breath and the journey between the asanas rather than solely on achieving perfect body alignment in an asana, as is emphasized in Hatha yoga. The term vinyasa also refers to a specific series of movements that are frequently done between each asana in a series.

Course Description: Ashtanga Yoga (“eight-limbed yoga”; ashta=eight, anga=limb) is a system of yoga that emphasizes vinyasa: the synchronization of the breath with movement to produce inner heat, known as tapas, to purifiy the blood, detoxify the muscles and internal organs, and improve circulation. This style of yoga as it is practiced on the mat is also referred to as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga but within the Ashtanga community of practitioners we simply say Ashtanga Yoga. The “eight limbs of Ashtanga” per se lead the path towards internal purification which is necessary for attaining self-realization. These eight spiritual paths or limbs are: Yama (moral codes), Niyama (self- purification and study), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawing the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (meditative consciousness). Asana, the third limb, is known as Hatha Yoga.“Ha” means Sun, “Tha” Moon, and represent the search for balance in the union of opposing forces. All of the eight limbs are integral to the vinyasa practice, i.e. “ashtanga vinyasa yoga” and are the foundations for developing a strong yoga practice and guiding the practitioner while on the mat.
