The said event was co-organized by a group of volunteers from the De La Salle University (DLSU) under their Department of Communication. The event aimed to introduce Haribon and its conservation work to new and potential members, and to discuss the various ways on how they can get involved in achieving its goals. “As a Haribon member, you are our biodiversity champions. Your support in different capacities will help amplify our advocacies in caring for the environment and its biodiversity,” said Arlie Endonila, Haribon’s resource and development manager during the orientation. To contribute to the organization’s goals, members of Haribon choose a specific committee where they think their skills and passion fit best. Committees include membership (i.e. recruitment of potential supporters and organizing of member events), resource development (i.e. fundraising), communications (i.e. awareness-raising, photography, videography, layouting) training and education (i.e. facilitating or documenting of training activities), advocacy (i.e. positioning of Haribon’s causes in various campaigns), site action (i.e. support in site-based interventions) and conservation science (i.e. collecting data on sites, habitats and species). At the end of the orientation, a number of non-member attendees proceeded to apply for membership whereas existing members reported that they learned more about the organization and gained a new perspective regarding their roles as members.

Movies, more than just a source of entertainment, reflect a nation’s personality. On the silver screen takes shape all the hopes, dreams and fantasies of the common man: legends, love, the stuff of myths and make believe. Its heroes become larger than life, often attaining the stature of demigods. They are looked upon as role models, serving as resources of inspiration. But most important, the movie industry has become a vital part of the national economy. The paper aims to define the industry and its structure, examine the laws that hinder or facilitate its growth as well as the existing associations and what they have done; look into the market potential of the film industry and its foreign market demand; examine supply capability; identify opportunities and threats confronting the industry; prepare an action plan to enhance competitiveness; and recommend a performance monitoring scheme. The film industry shows that its gross value added is growing faster than the gross domestic product and gross national product. In other words, the industry has a lot of potential to improve further through the years. Extent of growth of firms is primarily Metro-Manila based with Southern Tagalog as a far second. There is more investment in labor or manpower than capital expenditures based on the 1994 Census of Establishments.
