Dans cette thèse nous étudions l’existence d’une onde progressive pour un système d’équations intégro-différentiels provenant de l’épidémiologie évolutive. Nous utilisons des idées issues de la théorie des systèmes dynamiques couplées à des estimations sur le comportement asymptotique des profils. Nous prouvons que les ondes progressives ont une structure assez sim- ple découplant les variables de propagation spatio-temporelle des variables de trait phénotypique. Cette analyse nous permet de réduire le système d’équations des profils d’ondes progressives à dimension infinie à un système d’EDO à quatre dimensions. Nous prouvons l’existence d’ondes progressives pour toute vitesse d’onde supérieure à une vitesse minimale c?, pourvu que le seuil épidémique R0, qui s’exprime en fonction de la valeur propre principale d’un certain opérateur intégral, soit strictement supérieur à 1. Cette même condition de seuil est également utilisée pour démontrer que toute onde progressive relie deux états stationnaires déterminés. Dans une deuxième partie, nous étudions les propriétés de propagation des solutions pour le même système d’équations spatialement distribué, avec une densité initiale de plantes infectées à support compact spatialement en x. Lorsque R0 > 1, nous prouvons que la propagation se produit avec une vitesse de propagation qui coïncide avec la vitesse minimale c? des ondes pro- gressives étudiées dans la première partie. De plus, la solution du problème de Cauchy converge asymptotiquement vers une fonction spécifique pour laquelle la variable x du repère mobile et celle du phénotype y sont séparées. Mots-clés. Travelling wave solutions and propagation properties for a non-local evolutionary-epidemic system Abstract. In this thesis we study the existence of a travelling wave solutions for an integro-differential system of equations from evolutionary epidemiology. We use ideas from dynamical system ideas theory coupled with estimates of the asymptotic behaviour of profiles. We prove that the wave solutions have a rather simple structure. This analysis allows us to reduce the infinite dimensional travelling wave profile system of equations to a four dimensional ODE system. The latter is used to prove the existence of travelling wave solutions for any wave speed larger than a minimal wave speed c?, provided that the epidemic threshold R0, which is expressed as a function of the principal eigenvalue of a certain integral operator, is strictly greater than 1. This same threshold condition is also used to prove that any travelling wave connects two determined stationary states. In the second part, we study the propagation properties of the solutions for the same spatially distributed system of equations, when the initial density of infected plants is a compactly supported function with the space variable x. When R0 > 1, we prove that spreading occurs with a definite spreading speed that coincides with the minimal speed c? of the travelling wave solutions discussed in the first part. Moreover, the solution of the Cauchy problem asymptotically converges to some specific function for which the moving frame variable x and the phenotype one y are separated. Keywords. Their interests later diverged and, while Bartlett stayed in applied probability, Kendall took an increasingly pure line. Kingman “Obituary: David George Kendall” Introduction In the twentieth century probability is said to have become a “respectable” or “bona fide” branch of mathematics, the transformation occurring at different times in different countries.1 In Britain it came after the Second World War with research on stochastic processes by Maurice Stevenson Bartlett (1910-2002; FRS 1961) and David George Kendall (1918-2007; FRS 1964).2 They also contributed as teachers, especially Kendall who was the “effective beginning of the probability tradition in this country”—his pupils and his pupils’ pupils are “everywhere” reported Bingham (1996: 185). Bartlett and Kendall had full careers—extending beyond retirement in 1975 and ‘85— but I concentrate on the years of setting-up, 1940-55.

    David KENDALL: Father of British probability The Independent, 1.11.2007 Professor D. G. Kendall FRS, ¯rst Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge and the founding father and grand old man of British probability, has died aged 89. David George Kendall was born in Ripon, Yorkshire on 15 January 1918. He attended Ripon Grammar School, where he became interested in astron- omy. His mathematical talents were recognized early and encouraged - one teacher gave Kendall his Cambridge Part I lecture notes, and he was read- ing scholarship material in his early teens. He won a scholarship to Queen's College Oxford in 1936. At Queen's, he was tutored by U. S. Haslam-Jones, encouraged in his astronomical interests by the astronomer Professor E. A. Milne, and taught analysis by Professor E. C. Titchmarsh. When he graduated in 1939, he won a scholarship for research in astronomy (he had already published his ¯rst paper in the ¯eld, in 1938), but with mixed feelings as he was deeply in love with mathematics, particularly analysis. As he put it, "I was still torn between the two subjects and couldn't see how the conflict would be resolved, but Hitler resolved it for me." Like other brilliant young mathematicians of the time, Kendall soon be- came involved in war work. In March 1940, he began work with the Projectile Development Establishment, where he worked on rockets. As a result of the forced evacuations from Dunkirk and Norway, the British Army had had to abandon most of its heavy equipment, in particular artillery.

Prob. 45, 293–296 (2008) Printed in England © Applied Probability Trust 2008 DAVID GEORGE KENDALL AND APPLIED PROBABILITY David George Kendall, described as ‘the father of British probability’ in obituaries in The Independent, 1 November 2007, and in The Times, 21 November 2007, died on 23 October 2007 after a decade of declining health. A more rounded appreciation of his contributions to learning will in due course appear in the Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, for he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1964 and served on its Council in 1967–69 and 1983–84. These notes record his particular contributions to the activities of the Applied Probability Trust and attempt to survey some aspects of his work in the field of applied probability more generally. Indeed, it was in the applied probability field, broadly interpreted, that David Kendall played a pre-eminent role as an exemplar, mentor, and organiser for over 50 years of his active public life that built on his being called into wartime service in March 1940. Much of this can be gleaned from the quasi autobiographicalA conversation with David Kendall [2], especially of his formative years in Ripon where he was born (15 January 1918) and schooled, his undergraduate days in Oxford, and most importantly his experiences in operations research during and after World War II when inter alia he was given a week to learn statistics from Frank Anscombe, who used his notes from Maurice Bartlett’s Cambridge lectures. Much of his effort during the war was concerned with aspects of rocketry, and innumerable reports were written, presumably (from his conversation with Bingham) on sundry numerical applications, while his spare time was given over to pondering more mathematical matters.
