  • 2.1Sport and Leisure Time
2.1 SPORT AND LEISURE TIME There are a large number of sports that involve the water. Here we present the most popular in the countries involved in the project. SWIMMING The recreational activity of swimming has been recorded since prehistoric times. Although humans have been swimming for thousands of years, swimming only became a competitive sport in the early 1800s. Today, swimming is the third most-watched sport in the Olympic Games. In 1828, the first indoor swimming pool, St George's Baths was opened to the public. Competitive swimming became popular in the nineteenth century. Swimming is an event at the Summer Olympic Games, where male and female athletes compete in 16 of the recognized events each. Olympic events are held in a 50-meter pool, called a long course pool. In competitive swimming, four major styles have been established. Butterfly (fly) Backstroke (back) Breaststroke (breast) Freestyle (free) In open water swimming, where the events are swum in a body of open water (lake or sea), there are also 5 km, 10 km and 25 km events for men and women. SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING It is a hybrid form of swimming, dance and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers (either solos, duets, trios, combos, or teams) performing a synchronized 114 routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music. Competitors show off their strength, flexibility, and aerobic endurance required to performing difficult routines. Swimmers perform two routines for the judges, one technical and one free, as well as age group routines and figures. The origin - in 1933 & 1934, Katherine Whitney Curtis organized a show, "The Kay Curtis Modern Mermaids," for the World Exhibition in Chicago.

  • Development Project for Waterpolo in 5 Continents Introduction
FUTURE FOR WATERPOLO DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FOR WATERPOLO IN 5 CONTINENTS INTRODUCTION PROJECTS and EXPECTATIONS, sent to you by email on 4 April, is the document has given rise to foundation of WATERPOLO PEOPLE and the event «A future for water polo», held in Naples in June 2014. The work done by WATERPOLO PEOPLE consists of two parts: the VISION presented during the workshop in Naples and the DEVELOPMENT PROJECT realized after the informal meeting held in Lausanne, on 14 November 2014, with FINA Chief Executive Cornel Marcuelscu and TWPC President Gianni Lonzi. • WATERPOLO VISION is an X-ray on the status of water polo in the world containing both comments on the critical issues and the positive factors of our sport. It’s the result of a serene rereading of innumerable projects that have presented for over 40 years by people of a variety of professions and also by a study realized by an important marketing and communication agency. Most of these DEVELOPMENT POSSIBILITIES have never been realized or realized only part but, to this day, have not improved the popularity of water polo. • The DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, to be developed in 4 phases of intervention, describes PROPOSING SOLUTIONS (to achieve in short- middle - long term) that may be more or less accepted, but they will have to be decided by FINA with the collaboration of TWPC, any other FINA Commissions and possible collaborations, if appropriate to the development of the intervention. They were assumed the guidelines of the initiative that WATERPOLO PEOPLE presented to FINA, the LEN and the Italian Federation, in relation to the directives given by FINA after several meetings in Lausanne.

  • Physiological Diferencess Between Top Elite and Elite… Sport Science 6 (2013) 2: 59‐65
Idrizović, K. et al.: Physiological diferencess between top elite and elite… Sport Science 6 (2013) 2: 59‐65 PHYSIOLOGICAL DIFERENCESS BETWEEN TOP ELITE AND ELITE WATERPOLO PLAYERS Kemal Idrizović1, Drago Milošević1 and Ratko Pavlović2 1 Faculty of sport and physical education, University of Montenegro 2 Faculty physical culture and sport, University East Sarajevo Original scientific paper Abstract The aims of this study were to establish the physiological attributes of top elite (the second position on the World Championship in Barcelona 2013) and elite (the fourth position in The Adriatic league in season 2012/13) male water polo players, and to determine whether these attributes discriminate top elite players from elite players. Measurements and tests of basic anthropometry (body hieght, body mass, BMI, arm span, leg length), and specific motor abilities, swimming speed, throwing velocity and maximal force capacity were conducted on two occasions, separated by one day. A total of 22 water polo players, 11 top elite and 11 elite (24.26±2.78 vs. 21.83±2.67 years of age) participated in this study. Of all applied tests and measures, they statistically significantly differed only in the results of two specific motoric tests: throwing velocity (78.81±3.84 vs. 71.27±4.29 km/h, p˂0.01) and test of maximal force capacity (46.72±6.13 vs. 40.38±3.79 kg, p˂0.01). This study revealed that the main differences between top elite and elite water polo players are in abilities of maximum shot velocity and the production of a maximum force. The results therefore identify important factors for elite players to improve in the transition phase from elite to top elite level.

  • Why Lamorinda Girls Love Water Polo
LAMORINDA WEEKLY | Why Lamorinda girls love water polo Published September 6th, 2015 Why Lamorinda girls love water polo By Jon Kingdon Some sports have contradictory qualities. Football is a truly violent game and yet it has its graceful and acrobatic aspects. Football players require intelligence, speed and discipline - many of the same characteristics water polo players need to be successful. Developed in England in the 19th century, and originally called "water rugby," water polo began as a very physical sport. Possibly the most famous water polo match was in 1956 when Hungary played the USSR at the Melbourne Olympics in Australia. This game became known as "The Blood in the Water Match" due to the fair amount of blood left in the pool after Hungary's 4-0 win. Photo Gint Federas Though violence like this is rare, water polo is far more physical and demanding than the average spectator realizes. So what is it that attracts Lamorinda girls to the sport? According to Acalanes Girls Water Polo Coach Misha Buchel, the girls who go out for water polo have to bring a wide range of physical and mental skills to the game. They know that there is the potential for injury to the head, shoulders, elbows and legs. "It is not a sport for anyone that cannot handle contact. It can be a wrestling match in the water." The sport also demands the players have endurance. Players may have to go an entire quarter without touching the bottom of the pool. The game rewards the strongest and the fittest.
