Organization of a Large Scale Music Event: Planning and Production
Organization of a large scale music event: planning and production Tatiana Caciur Thesis MUBBA 2012 Abstract 17.1.2012 MUBBA Author or authors Group or year of Tatiana Caciur entry 2008 Title of report Number of Organization of a large scale music event: planning and pages and production. appendices 54 + 4 Teacher/s or supervisor/s Heta-Liisa Malkavaara Live entertainment is currently one of the few vital components of the music industry as it struggles to survive in the XXI century and conform to the drastic changes on the music market. Music events occur in great amount on a daily basis and it is important to plan and produce them in the right manner in order to stay relevant and secure one‟s place on the market. This report introduces various crucial matters that require attention during event organization process, such as marketing and strategic planning, communication and promotion, risk management, event programming and capacity management, to name a few. The 5-phase project management model is applied as the base on which this thesis is built. The research is conducted by comparing the theoretical and practical approach used in the music event business. The practical approach is based on examinations and interviews with the world market leader in live entertainment – Live Nation. An additional analysis of practices used in other large and successful music events in Europe and USA is also conducted. As this thesis shows, the practical approach is often easier and less rigorous than the theory. Some of the steps in this process may be simply omitted due to being considered of little relevance by the management team, many other are outsourced to professional agencies depending on requirements (security, catering). -
Masquerade and Mischief in Boccaccio's World
Travestimento/Travestitismo: Masquerade and Mischief in Boccaccio’s World Scott Antonio Failla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Scott Antonio Failla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Travestimento/travestitismo: Masquerade and Mischief in Boccaccio’s World Scott Antonio Failla Travestimento/travestitismo: Masquerade and Mischief in Boccaccio’s World examines Boccaccio’s use of masquerade to parody social conventions and invert the cultural themes characterizing fourteenth-century Italy. Its aim is to demonstrate the myriad ways in which the medieval author masks and unmasks characters—often using gender as performance—to gain access to either sublimated sexuality or forbidden power, and ultimately to reveal rather than conceal human nature. This study offers a close reading of the Ninfale fiesolano and five novellas (2.3, 2.9, 3.1, 3.2, and 4.2) of the Decameron, focusing on characters that go beyond their usual identity and/or the limits of their biological sex to occupy transgendered spaces. Today, our understanding of gender studies encompasses a far more inclusive understanding of the term “gender.” This dissertation begins with the concept that gender is fluid and performative, and that though the body may be fixed, its gender is not confined to restrictions imposed on it by society. Some of Boccaccio’s characters, accordingly, occupy multiple gendered spaces while assuming the identity of another sex, in particular Zinevra/Sicurano, the abbot/princess, and Africo (Chapters Two, Three, and Four). Although far from the transformations found in the mythological world of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Boccaccio’s tales offer the “metamorphosis” of the masquerade, that is, a false outward show, a pretense, or façade that oftentimes is achieved through disguise or costume. -
Poems Written by Students of St Genevieve's High School, Belfast During A
Poems written by students of St Genevieve’s High School, Belfast during a residency with poet, Kate Newmann. Supported by the Department of Foreign Affair and Trade. Tierna Crossan MYSTERY Yesterday I was doing homeworK in my room, and the window was closed. I was sitting with my little sister and I smelt my granny’s perfume. I looKed, and I was confused. I said to her Nicole, did you spray perfume? She said, No. Because she was colouring in, I acted as if it was nothing, but I smelt it again – as if someone was spraying it in front of me, but no one was there. I listen, and process every word. Silence chooses me. The apparition is a butterfly showing itself to me. The difference between bone and breath is solid and air. MY GRANDA He is a ten pound note that is hidden behind the lyrics of a song. He is a crossword puzzle book that fills in all the blanKs for you. He is a downfall of rain, followed by sunshine. He is a rich seafood chowder bubbling in a pot. He is a raging flame that wouldn’t go out. He is his own song that he had written for himself. LANZAROTE The words sink deep under the water. The blazing sun glaring down at me is beyond my reach. The heartbeat speeds up with all the excitement. My pocket’s distended because of al the seashells I collected. I grow tired of the heat pounding down on me. The longest voice is the man in the restaurant telling the specials. -

Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation Within American Tap Dance Performances of The
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 © Copyright by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 by Brynn Wein Shiovitz Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Chair Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950, looks at the many forms of masking at play in three pivotal, yet untheorized, tap dance performances of the twentieth century in order to expose how minstrelsy operates through various forms of masking. The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body. -
The Complete Stories
The Complete Stories by Franz Kafka a.b.e-book v3.0 / Notes at the end Back Cover : "An important book, valuable in itself and absolutely fascinating. The stories are dreamlike, allegorical, symbolic, parabolic, grotesque, ritualistic, nasty, lucent, extremely personal, ghoulishly detached, exquisitely comic. numinous and prophetic." -- New York Times "The Complete Stories is an encyclopedia of our insecurities and our brave attempts to oppose them." -- Anatole Broyard Franz Kafka wrote continuously and furiously throughout his short and intensely lived life, but only allowed a fraction of his work to be published during his lifetime. Shortly before his death at the age of forty, he instructed Max Brod, his friend and literary executor, to burn all his remaining works of fiction. Fortunately, Brod disobeyed. Page 1 The Complete Stories brings together all of Kafka's stories, from the classic tales such as "The Metamorphosis," "In the Penal Colony" and "The Hunger Artist" to less-known, shorter pieces and fragments Brod released after Kafka's death; with the exception of his three novels, the whole of Kafka's narrative work is included in this volume. The remarkable depth and breadth of his brilliant and probing imagination become even more evident when these stories are seen as a whole. This edition also features a fascinating introduction by John Updike, a chronology of Kafka's life, and a selected bibliography of critical writings about Kafka.
