Since 1957 he has collected intensively throughout the area and has authen­ ticated the study with approximately 15,000 sheets in a series of approximately 4,500 collections. The speci mens have been processed according to standard herbarium proce­ dures. For the most part the collections have been distrib­ uted with the first set going to the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University, the second to Texas Technological College at Lubbock, Texas, and additional sets to other herbaria. The author has supplemented his own collect ions with specimens from research area in the herbaria of Oklahoma State University and Texas Technological College. Monographs, revisions and other taxonomic literature i n the Oklahoma State University Library and the personal libraries of Dr. U. T. Waterfall and the author were us ed i n the identification of the specimens.

This work lays out how the city council, main city newspaper, and the city’s Anglo population began constructing a post-racial narrative by touting that Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) voluntarily desegregated in 1955, suggesting that desegregation throughout the city followed without incident. The city built on this narrative by arguing that the city united during the aftermath of a 1970 tornado that tore through the city, ending all remaining remnants of segregation. However, as this study explores the events during the three decades following the 1970 tornado, such as the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) lawsuit against LISD, and the civil rights activity that occurred in the wake of the DOJ’s presence, it is made evident that the city’s collective memory is more myth than reality.

Abstract Five millennia ago, the North American Beaver (Castor canadensis) was extirpated from the Southern High Plains by droughts. Beaver were found to be largely absent from the Llano Estacado, despite exhaustive search efforts. Here we report the first definitive evidence of an extant C. canadensis population recolonizing the Llano Estacado. Resumen Hace cinco milenios, el castor norteamericano (Castor canadensis) fue extirpado de las Altas Llanuras del Sur por las sequías. Se encontró que los castores estaban en gran parte ausentes del Llano Estacado, a pesar de los exhaustivos esfuerzos de búsqueda.
