Plantings dating back to 1908 and still thriving give the garden much of its character. Their bright festive panicles of white blossoms add a cheery background and accent to the symphony of spring color in the lower Desert Garden. According to the latest authorities there are 45 yucca species and 14 varieties and they are placed in the agave family. Most of the species are found in the Southwest, northern and central Mexico and Baja California. But the genus is more widespread with species found along the Atlantic seaboard, the Great Plains, into Canada, and south as far as Guatemala. Yucca blossoms, with the exception of at least one species (the rose-tinged Yucca endlichiana) are mostly creamy white. -

NOON ! “Intergrated Pest Management” HEALTHY GARDEN – HEALTHY HOME Representatives from the Healthy Garden – Healthy Home program, including several UC Master Gardeners and the UCCE San Diego County IPM Program Representative, Scott Parker, will facilitate a workshop on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM, a scientifically based approach for pest management, incorporates cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical Aphid options as part of an overall pest management program. The primary focus of an IPM program is to utilize a non-toxic or least toxic approach in addressing pest control concerns. During this workshop, Ants, a very common home and garden pest in San Diego County, will be used to demonstrate the proper implementation of an IPM approach. However, additional topic related to cactus and succulents such as Aphids, Aloe Mite, Mealy Bugs, Agave Weevil, and Damping Off Disease will be discussed. Ladybug on the job! Aloe Mite (Yuck!) Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. Tschudin, Jr. Director – Design & Construction Encompass Health 9001 Liberty Parkway Birmingham, Alabama 35242 Subject: Biology Letter Report for Encompass Health Chula Vista, City of Chula Vista, California Dear Mr. Tschudin: This letter report provides an analysis of potential biological resource impacts associated with Encompass Health Chula Vista (proposed project) located in the City of Chula Vista (City), California (Assessor’s Parcel Number 644- 040-01-00). This biology letter report also includes a discussion of any potential biological resources that may be subject to regulation under the City of Chula Vista Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) Subarea Plan (Subarea Plan) (City of Chula Vista 2003). Project Location The property (i.e., on-site; Assessor’s Parcel Number 644-040-01-00) occupies 9.79 acres and is located approximately 0.2 miles east of Interstate 805 between Main Street and Olympic Parkway (Figure 1, Project Location). The project also includes an off-site impact area of 0.22 acre located along the southeastern corner of the site where future utility connections may occur, making the total study area acreage for the project 10.01 acres. The site is located on Shinohara Lane accessed from Brandywine Avenue and is located on the U.S. Geological Service 7.5-minute series topographic Imperial Beach quadrangle map. The site exists within an urban portion of the City and is bound on the south and east by industrial buildings, to the west by single-family residences, and to the north by multi-family condominiums (Figure 2, Aerial Image). -

The aim of this study, therefore, was to characterize the reproductive system of K. laetivirens through analyses of floral morphology, trophic resources and floral visitors. Floral structures, pollen / egg ratio, in vitro pollen germination, pollen grain structure in scanning microscopy and the availability of trophic resources by the evaluation of potential and instant nectar were described. -

Graptopetalum is member of a group of taxa restricted to North America, one of the centers of diversity of Crassulaceae; however, their phylogenetic relationships are not yet understood. Nineteen species of Graptopetalum and 24 species from nine other genera of Crassulaceae were sampled for use in three separate parsimony analyses: ITS alone, ETS alone, and a combined nuclear 1 plastid DNA analysis using all four gene regions. The ETS data set had the highest number of parsimony-informative sites, about 30% more than in ITS, but the most fully resolved tree resulted when the four DNA regions were combined. Only four subclades of the tree received moderate to strong bootstrap support, one of which includes all species of Graptopetalum having a single whorl of stamens. However, Graptopetalum is not monophyletic. Instead, Tacitus bellus and select species of Cremnophila, Sedum, and Echeveria are interspersed among species of Graptopetalum and show evidence of grouping according to geographical range of distribution more so than habit or ¯oral morphology. -

THE FLORISTICS OF THE CALIFORNIA ISLANDS Peter H. Raven Stanford University The Southern California Islands, with their many endemic spe cies of plants and animals, have long attracted the attention of biologists. This archipelago consists of two groups of islands: the Northern Channel Islands and the Southern Channel Islands. The first group is composed of San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa islands; the greatest water gap between these four is about 6 miles, and the distance of the nearest, Anacapa, from the mainland only about 13 miles. In the southern group there are also four islands: San Clemente, Santa Catalina, Santa Bar bara, and San Nicolas. These are much more widely scattered than the islands of the northern group; the shortest distance be tween them is the 21 miles separating the islands of San Clemente and Santa Catalina, and the nearest island to the mainland is Santa Catalina, some 20 miles off shore. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the complex floristics of the vascular plants found on this group of islands, and this will be done from three points of view. First will be considered the numbers of species of vascular plants found on each island, then the endemics of these islands, and finally the relationship between the island and mainland localities for these plants. By critically evaluating the accounts of Southern California island plants found in the published works of Eastwood (1941), Mill¬ spaugh and Nuttall (1923), Munz (1959), and Raven (1963), one can derive a reasonably accurate account of the plants of the area. -

Abstract: The use of DNA sequence data in plant systematics has brought us closer than ever to formulating well- founded hypotheses about phylogenetic relationships, and phylogenetic research keeps on revealing that plant genera as traditionally circumscribed often are not monophyletic. Here, we assess the monophyly of all genera of vascular plants found in Germany. Using a survey of the phylogenetic literature, we discuss which classiications would be consistent with the phylogenetic relationships found and could be followed, provided monophyly is accepted as the primary criterion for circumscribing taxa. We indicate whether and which names are available when changes in ge- neric assignment are made (but do not present a comprehensive review of the nomenclatural aspects of such names). Among the 840 genera examined, we identiied c. 140 where data quality is suiciently high to conclude that they are not monophyletic, and an additional c. 20 where monophyly is questionable but where data quality is not yet suicient to reach convincing conclusions. While it is still iercely debated how a phylogenetic tree should be trans- lated into a classiication, our results could serve as a guide to the likely consequences of systematic research for the taxonomy of the German lora and the loras of neighbouring countries. -

We have graduated from frosted basement windows, where we could only tell if it was cloudy or sunny, to a south-facing wall of nothing but windows, with blinds to keep out too much sunlight. Box number is the same (299) as well as the zip code of 63166-0299, but our street address for package deliveries is 4500 Shaw Blvd. with a zip code of 63110. * * * * * Dr. Gerald Bane Straley (1945-1997) On 11 December 1997, we lost a friend and colleague, Gerald B. Straley, following a long and courageous battle. His continual optimism during his illness was an inspiration to all who knew him. Gerald was a Regional Coordinator, member of the Editorial Committee, and author for the FNA project. Gerald grew up on the family farm in Virginia and this undoubtedly initiated his great interest in nature. He completed his B.Sc. degree in Ornamental Horticulture at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and then went to Ohio University to study for his M.Sc. in Botany. In 1976, he came to do his Ph.D. on Arnica at the University of British Columbia under the guidance of Dr.
