The company was established in Kangasniemi, Eastern Finland, in 1979. Besides Kangasniemi, the company has two other operating locations: in Kiiu, Estonia, since 2005 and in Parikkala, Finland, since 2008. Tehomet Baltic in Kiiu was founded primarily to serve customers in the Baltic countries. Parikkala has up-to-date premises in which the product development, testing and production of decorative wooden columns takes place. Tehomet’s special expertise can be summed up in its mission statement: the objective is to design and manufacture individual, high quality products according to customers’ wishes in an agreed schedule and investing in product development. We are well aware of the constantly changing needs of our customers. Arms are available in different sizes: single or double arm configurations and outreaches of up to four metres. As an option, poles can be supplied equipped, for example, with a safety-enhancing slip flange, a standard flange (e.g. parking facility ceiling covers, bedrock installations) and a power socket installation plate (festive light installations etc.). It is also possible to obtain most poles equipped with two hand holes. 13 The products are dimensioned, designed and manufactured according to the international EN 40 standard, taking into consideration local wind and terrain conditions. Poles and arms are manufactured using high-quality low-silicon steel (Si + P ≤ 0.04%), which ensures a bright and uniform galvanized surface. The poles can be painted according to the customer’s wishes in our up-to-date premises using either powder coating or two-component wet paints. This not only enhances the appearance, but also improves the hot dip galvanized steel structure’s capacity to withstand extensive environmental stresses (air impurities, moisture etc.). Poles exposed to significant stress can be coated with a thermoplastic Plascoat coating. The Plascoat coating gives first-class protection against corrosion and it facilitates cleaning; graffiti and stickers, for example, are easy to remove. On the fringes of post-Reformation Europe, church and state authorities faced problems in enforcing church attendance. In the Swedish kingdom, religious uniformity was seen as vital for the success of the state after the Lutheran confession had been established, and absences from church were punishable by law. The seventeenth century saw significant tightening of legislation relating to church absences and other breaches of the Sabbath, and severe punishments were introduced. Despite consid- erable deterrents, it was sometimes difficult to control local inhabitants: absence cases were regularly brought before the local courts in Eastern Finland, where authorities were hampered by a combination of geographical distance and a highly mobile population.

The concentrations of radioactive cesium and other gamma-emitting nuclides were determined on meat of moose8 and other cervids and also on small game in various parts of the country before or in the beginning of the hunting season. The most important radionuclides found in the samples were 134Cs and 137Cs. In addition to these, 131I was detected in the first moose meat samples in the spring, and 110"Ag in a part of the waterfowl samples. None of them was significant as far as the dietary intake of radionuclides is concerned. The transfer of fallout radiocesium to game meat was most efficient in the case of the arctic hare and inland waterfowl; terrestrial game birds and the brown hare belonged to the same category as moose.

    Summary A WRETCHED LIFE OR A JOURNEY TO WEALTH Adaptation of immigrants from Savo, North Karelia and Kainuu to Canada in 1918–1930 In the period 1918–1930 a total of 4 743 immigrants moved from Savo, North Karelia and Kainuu to Canada. The move across the ocean from eastern Finland was less common than from Ostrobothnia because people from eastern Finland preferred moving to Finnish cities. On the average, 55 percent of those leaving the province of Kuopio were men; the corresponding figure in the province of Mikkeli was 62 percent and in Kainuu 65%. More than half of the emigrants were 20–29 years of age, or young adults who had just entered the prime of their working lives. Over two-thirds were unmarried, which considering their age was rather logical. By social background they were chiefly farmers (or their children) or workers. Due to the structure of industry there were more workers among the emigrants in eastern Finland than elsewhere in the country (tenant farming as an institution was less developed there than in the west). Emigration in the province of Kuopio centered on the town of Kuopio, but proportionally its significance was greatest in Hankasalmi, the area surrounding Kuopio, Lapinlahti, Iisalmi and environs, Kiuruvesi and Tuusniemi. Trans-Atlantic migration was extremely rare in North Karelia. In the province of Mikkeli emigration was centered in Kangasniemi, the rural parish of Mikkeli and Pieksämäki. Three-quarters of the migrants from Kainuu were from the town of Kajaani, Sotkamo and Kuhmoniemi. In general, I have discovered 401 persons from eastern Finland whose occupation is listed.
