RELIGIOUS S CHOOL IN ACTION

During the April 19 session of TBH Religious School, Mrs. Patterson’s class went outside for a lesson about helping oth- ers and sharing kindness.

Every student laid down on the ground and was traced in side- walk chalk. Then their class- mates had to fill in the outlines with something nice about each student. A kind word about someone can be the best help sometimes! And it doesn’t cost us anything to be nice to each other. It’s an important lesson and a fun way to learn! Page 8

TORAH PORTIONS

Acharei Mot/ - Leviticus 16:1-20:27—Leviticus 16 describes the ceremony for the holy festival of the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 17 establishes general rules for sacrifice and sanctuary. Leviticus 18 lays down specific laws about permitted and forbidden sexual relationships. describes the holy community through a series of specific commandments. Leviticus 20 warns against the snares of sexual immorality and idolatry, mandating a death penalty for certain sins.

Emor - Leviticus 21:1-24:23— begins with special laws of sanctity, propriety and purity for the priesthood. Leviticus 23 provides an overview of the biblical calendar, a listing of G-d’s appointed times.

Behar/ — Leviticus 25:1-27:34 —This portion from the Torah introduces the laws of the sabbatical years, the and laws concerning redemption. And the last reading from Leviti- cus promises blessings and rewards for Israel if they will keep the Torah, but punishment and curses if they break the commandments of the Torah. The last chapter discusses laws pertaining to vows, valuations and tithes.

Bamidbar - Numbers 1:1-4:20 —The tells the story of Israel’s trek through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land, their failure at the edge of the land and the subse- quent forty years of wandering. It concludes with the story of the second generation’s triumphs over the first Canaanite resistance. The book ends with the Israelites poised on the edge of , ready to take their inheritance. Woven in the midst of these narratives is a significant amount of legal ma- terial. The first reading from Bamidbar and the thirty-fourth reading from the Torah begin with a census of the tribes of Israel and the Levitical families just prior to the departure from Sinai.

Nasso - Numbers 4:21-7:89 —This Torah portion finishes up the census of the Levites that was un- der way at the end of the last Torah portion, before going on to discuss the purification of the camp, the ritual for a woman suspected of adultery, the laws of the Nazirite vow, the priestly benediction and the gifts the heads of the twelve tribes brought for the dedication of the altar.

Growing Meetings up in the North End, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie’s intelli- gence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. Spring finally made it here! After weeks of watching the snow slowly melt, it’s so wonderful to see all the flowers in bloom and the trees coming back to life. To everything, there is a season. And while some things are beginning their cycle, others are ending as well. The Religious School year is coming to a close and stu- dents are moving on to their next challenges.

Cantor Harris is also moving on and while we are sad to see him go, we wish him nothing but the best in his new position. Please come to wish him well in person during services or Sunday school.
