It connects trading nations across the world and helps the UK to benefit from the global economy. In 2007, we handled more cargo than ever before. In 2008, the Port broke another record with almost one million cruise passengers passing through the Port. It is, therefore, no surprise that the Port is recognised as one of very few UK international gateways whose commercial growth is critical to regional and national economic success. In addition to higher density, layouts are needed that prioritize walking, cycling and public transport so that they become the norm. We need to reduce our dependence on private motor vehicles by improving public transport, rail-based where possible, and concentrating development in urban areas. We should protect the countryside, farmland, natural beauty, open space, soil and biodiversity, avoiding urban sprawl and out-of-town development. We should protect and promote local distinctiveness and character and our heritage, respecting and making best use of historic buildings, street forms and settlement patterns.

I should first apologise for having moved the venue for this cruise to the Solent. Having promised a cruise in Zeeland, which would have been a new experience for the Corinthians, I found the risk of exposing skippers to significant fines from the customs authorities, particularly in Belgium, unacceptable. The “red diesel” argument rumbles on with no sign that it will be satisfactorily resolved any time soon. If you were in any doubt, the reason for the name, Solent Jubilee, is to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
