It consists of Porter’s correspondence, financial records, scrapbooks, and diaries. The notes contained within this collection provide a basis for studying the impact of Industrialization in Rexburg, Idaho. Following Citations: MSSI 29, BYUISC. Biographical History Arthur Porter was born in New Zealand in 1876. After spending the first nine years of his life in New Zealand his family moved to America. His family then settled in Brigham City, Utah. In 1889 he moved to Logan, Utah. Porter then attended Brigham Young College in Logan. In 1896 he graduated from Brigham Young College with a Bachelor’s Degree. From 1896-1899 he served a mission in Switzerland. He attended the University of Geneva in 1899 as well. He returned from Europe to begin his professional career as an educator in Idaho, and Utah. From 1900-1902 he taught in the Oneida Stake Academy. On November 7, 1900 he married Gertrude Paul in the Logan LDS Temple. In 1901 Porter bought his first interest in a newspaper the Preston Standard. He later sold that interest and moved to Rexburg Idaho. From 1902-1916 he taught full- time at Ricks College. In 1906, his wife Gertrude Paul died. Porter was married two years later to Nelle Child in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Also in 1908 Porter purchased the Current Journal with his brother Frank Porter. From 1913-1918 Porter served as a city councilman. From this time period on, Arthur Porter was involved extensively in politics within the State of Idaho. He later served as a delegate to the state democratic convention, and went on to serve in numerous government, and civic functions. From 1926-1945 Porter served on the Ricks College Board of Education Committee. From 1929-1935 Porter served as the mayor of Rexburg fro three terms. He was involved in the Boy Scout Program throughout his adult life. He served within the LDS Church in many capacities, including bishoprics and stake presidencies. Porter was the elder statesmen of Rexburg until his death in 1968. Scope and Content Note This collection provides immense materials into the mind of a civic minded citizen.
