Abstract In today’s pop culture world, celebrities are seen as perfect individuals with grand houses, cars, and entourages. When Chris Brown came on the scene in the mid-2000s, he was a teenage heartthrob who could do no wrong. That all changed when he brutally beat fellow music superstar and then girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. Brown’s media persona came crashing down, along with seemingly everything else in his life. However, in a situation where many artists would normally descend and never return, Brown has surged back almost to the heights he reached prior to 2009. How did this happen? What does the role of the music industry play in this? The norms and tendencies of the popular music industry are examined to determine the external factors that both hindered and helped Brown’s changes in reputation (and by extension, record sales) over time. -

MUSICAL BORROWING IN HIP-HOP MUSIC: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS AND CASE STUDIES Justin A. Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch. -
Numerous Artists Are Accusing Chris Brown of Ripping Off Their Work in His Bawdy New Music Video
AiA Art News-service Numerous Artists Are Accusing Chris Brown of Ripping Off Their Work in His Bawdy New Music Video Cantaloupe boobs? A shapely beach bum? Before they appeared in Chris Brown's new music video, these visual puns were works of art. Sarah Cascone, May 22, 2019 Chris Brown has been accused of copying the work of numerous artists in his new music video "Wobble Up." Comparisons from @Diet_Prada. Artists are accusing Chris Brown of copying their visual imagery in his new video “Wobble Up.” The video, which debuted on Monday, is rife with suggestive gags that sexualize everyday objects as body parts. But numerous artists have said that those allusions are taken from their work. German artist Marius Sperlich was among the first to speak out, posting side-by- side comparisons of two of his 2018 works alongside scenes from the music video on Instagram. Both Sperlich’s work and “Wobble Up” feature images of a temperature dial in place of a woman’s nipple, and tropical island shaped like a woman’s rear end (giving new meaning to the term “beach bum”). “Intellectual Property has to be protected at any cost!” wrote Sperlich in the caption, noting that his work, which was done in 2018, was incorporated into the music video “without permission, without credit.” “For many, the internet is just an open source of concepts, ideas and free content. Nobody cares about creation, originals and credit anymore,” Sperlich added. “Especially if you are a young and an emerging artist… most can’t afford a lawyer for a lawsuit. -
